I'm a Botafogo fan and I was there at the Monumental. I travelled 20 hours by bus. Once Gregore was expelled, I still believed. I wouldn't spend a thousand dollars to go watch this game and then just give up hope at the first minute. I believed that we could hold them off, carry the game to a penalty shootout and win. I screamed out of my lungs "BELIEVE" to our players. And they did. And I witnessed something far greater than expected, the most insane improbable victory I've ever seen in my 32 years of life following football. How can a 10-men team from the first minute win 3-1 in a continental final? It completely defies logic. If you asked me what would be the "perfect" final before the game started, I would've said a 4-0 attacking masterclass by Botafogo. Real life gifted us an even more memorable, fantastic story. And suddenly all the years of mockery and relegations and bad teams and bottlings paid off emotionally. BOTAFOGO CAMPEÃO DA LIBERTADORES CARALHOOOOOOO.

Hey zealand i'm from brazil the major reason for our dominance in the Copa Libertadores is that our competitions like Copa do brasil pay a lot more them the equivilents in other south american countries. Adding to that we have also the rise of privately owned clubs with deep pockets to invest like Botafogo before a few years ago those were pretty rare but now a good part of the local game moving a lot of money arround.

@Lucaz992 күн бұрын
@@balsis_ch6217well, Argentina and Brazil have always dominated this competition with a few exceptions. Argentina qualifies 6 teams and everyone else qualifies 4 teams. Not only the quality of our league is miles above everyone else right now, we are the most populous nation in the continent (bout half the population of South America) so I think 7 is deserved. Not everyone qualifies directly to the group stage either, some have to play qualifiers
@balsis_ch62172 күн бұрын
@Lucaz99 I know how the qualification works and of course Brazil deserves to have more teams than any other country but you still have to understand that having more teams does give them more chances to win the whole thing, it's also a fact that CL tickets are not shared fairly nor do they reflect the level of each South American league, Colombia and Ecuador having the same amount of directly qualified teams as Perú and Venezuela is just ridiculous

Brazilian clubs are the only thing keeping the Libertadores Cup up in quality right now. Argentina hasn't produced a club-level team worth a damn in a decade, regardless of those two final appearences you mentioned which only die hard local fans actually believed they were going to win. Uruguay is even worse having lost their status as one of the Big 3 leagues of the continent since the freaking 1980s, and not showing any indication of doing anything to remedy that situation in any way. And "teams from other countries becoming a surprise and having a great year" doesn't happen anymore, so we won't be seeing another champion from Colombia, Chile or Paraguay like we have seen in the past. I still remember when a club from Ecuador reached the final in 1998 and everyone was amazed by that. If it weren't for Brazilian teams, the Libertadores Cup wouldn't be worth watching. Also, the Libertadores Cup is broadcasted to over 100 countries in 30 different languages. Its not an issue of broadcast, is an issue of nobody outside of South America giving a damn about it. You said it yourself, you had to be reminded by your viewers that it was a thing that was going to happen, otherwise you wouldn't have bothered to watch it. Europeans don't give a shit about South American football, Africans and Asians used to back in the 20th century but not anymore. Any casual football fan would watch the UEFA Champions League, and the World Cup and that's it. The people that would ever watch the Libertadores Cup are die hard football fans, the same type of people that watched the African Cup of Nations last year, extremely devoted football fans that would watch football anywhere, and that is a niche audience that is not worth bothering to advertise to, because they are already aware of it, and casual fans will never be convinced to watch something besides the UEFA Champions League or the World Cup (not the Club World Cup, the nations World Cup, casual football fans are not even aware a Club World Cup exists). Nobody is going to waste money advertising the Libertadores Cup because they are perfectly aware that nobody outside of South America cares about watching it, and that is not going to change in the forseeable future.

What makes the Copa Libertadores so hype is the element surprise. No one thought Botafogo or Atlético Mineiro could become this year's finalists, especially Botafogo from their last pathetic season where they dropped the league title when they managed to hold 14pts in front of the second contender and later league winner Palmeiras, so Botafogo went in this run as an underdog, they even started in the eliminatory phase which is previous from the groups stage, it's now the second time only a team managed to be champions of the Libertadores coming from the eliminatory stage. In the Champions League this could never happen, can you imagine Sporting of Lisbon coming from the knockout phase and making to finals to play against lets say Porto? Never could happen in the CL. And it's not like this tournament is easy and that's because it happens, no, every second, every moment in the Libertadores is a total game changer.
@leandroteixeira33Күн бұрын
We must be realists, Botafogo was a clear contender (if not favorite) at least starting from the quarterfinal after they beat Palmeiras. With Tite, Flamengo wasn't as much of a threat. Mineiro was the biggest surprise, though. They had to face the current champions (who were fighting against relegation, yes, but who beat them in the league) and then the clear favorite to win the competition, River Plate, and they beat them 3 x 0.

Now you know what we felt back in '19 against River Plate, the victories where everything is set in stone to go wrong are always the best The only noteworthy difference is how Botafogo posed themselves, they were much more dominant than that Flamengo, which was pressured with dangerous chances from beginning to end, Botafogo played more aggressively, which netted them 2-0 at the end of the 1st half
@wisefelipeКүн бұрын
Dude, that goal was the first noteworthy thing Alex Telles did in his career as far as we Brazilians are concerned. You gotta keep in mind, that other than the Champions League we don't really care what our players do in Europe, the national leagues are basically irrelevant to us. That is why for the World Cup we started Richarlyson (who had been good for the national team) and didn't even call up Firmino, for example. In fact, a good chunk of Brazilians only learned who Firmino was when he scored against Flamengo in the Club World Cup, he has always been super contested here as he never played for a big club in Brazil. This is a whole new world man, I hope you enjoy your stay.

Talking about the brazilian dominance in South America, it all comes to money, essentially, the Brasileirão champion will earn more prize money than the Libertadores champion, hell, some state championships pay better than some leagues combined in south america, add this to a nation that produces talented players every year and a League System that allows for private investment without any FFP regulations and boom, you dominate the continent. Edit: Botafogo is owned by John Textor who also owns debt-ridden Lyon, he couldn't replicate his success in France mainly because Ligue 1 actually has FFP regulations (PSG disagrees) and because it is a lot cheaper to invest in Brazilin Real than it is in Euro/Dollars. (5x times cheaper according to exchange rates)
@LNHOUSE16 минут бұрын

The top Brazilian teams have been closing the gap on Europe for the past 5 years. On that, there has been a financial restructure of some of the teams, which has allowed them to recruit back a lot of good talent that was sold to Europe at early ages such as 18, but didn't pan out as Europe's top clubs wanted or didn't even get on their radar in order to stay in Europe, and therefore became available to be bought back for fees that some clubs here can now afford. Along with that, Brazil's economy (at least in the football sense) has grown to dominate our neighbours', which has created a Premier League phenomenom: essentialy, Brazil has become to South America what England is to Europe in the football economic sense. We are buying most of the continent's quality in terms of players and leaving their local south american teams short of quality compared to Brazil. Our mid table/relegation zone and even second division teams are filled with south american players, which wasn't the case 10 years ago. In terms of the football played on the pitch, we are pretty much importing good portuguese coaches who have been in Europe's top leagues and also housing south american coaches who are yet to make the jump to Europe. That has created a bit of a revolution in how the game is played at the top level here, since our brazilian coaches were being left behind in terms of physical fitness and match intensity.

2:09 brazilian economy is a tad better than the argentinian. there's more money going around in brazilian football, and also brazil has changed its rule recently to allow for more foreigners in a match (9 is the current limit). All these together made so brazil can actually be a target for south americans planning to make some money, which in itself makes the league a lot more competitive. Once the league is more competitive, it makes so players who are past their primes (but still far from retiring) - Felipe Anderson, Alex Telles, or players who still aren't established in europe (Luiz Henrique, Gerson, Scarpa) will be able to also join the competition. 3:50 not necessarily a favourite, since they lost the league last year after being #1 for most of it. Also, their only Brasileirão title was in 95, and before that they weren't getting important titles maybe since Garricha's time (who was a botafogo player) 5:20 even ronaldinho went back to win a libertadores (with Atlético Mineiro) 5:50 I agree the marketing is shit. Maybe the whole competition is something hard to be watched by europeans (games are late for europe) but at least the final itself should be better publicized in europe.

More than that its because the Mexicans stopped playing the Libertadores, and Brazil got a ridiculous ammount of teams into it to begin with. Another reason, in my opinion is VAR, playing the likes of Boca Juniors before VAR was just a pain, all the dirty tricks, cheating and bs brazilian teams had to put up with over the years. That being said I really wish the mexicans were back, the mls getting into it would be nice too, the financial disparity is sadly a side effect of the overall state of the continent that goes beyond the sport, no solution there in the foreseeable future, there are so many historic clubs that I love to hate that sadly are a shadow of their former selves these days.

Also, teams are much more conservative on their kits comparing to european clubs, with teams in Europe often changing their away kit colors quite often, and making a third kit with colors that don't really have much to do with the club, while in Brazil the away kit is almost always white, and the third kit is often still with one kf the club colors, but using it in a less traditionial way. Like in the case of Botafogo, in many years their kits was basically home black and white stripes, away all white, and third kit all black

While there are people with a beautiful view of the world, generally is because of VAR, video assisted referees. The other teams just robbed their way into the win many, many times, actually, 26 times. Since VAR became obligaroty in Libertadores, no hispanic team has won a title.

The Brazilian league is insane in terms of internal competitiveness. Half the clubs have history and huge fanbases and it feels like every year a historical club is relegated.

Brazil's dominance can be explained in 2 words: Money and competence. Brazilian teams are not only becoming richer and richer, which is reflected not only in the quality of their signings but also in the different prize pools in their competitions, but also the other countries are seemingly poorer in comparison. However argentinian teams were always kind of poor so here is where the other factor comes into play: the Argentinian league is getting less and less competent so it doesn't matter if a club like River Plate is wealthy enough to compete with Brazilian teams but then having to play against 3 consecutive sh**ty teams in the league. Meanwhile, the Brazilian league is wild and there're plenty of teams fighting for something like a CL spot or avoiding relegation (which was cancelled *mid-season* in Argentina)

Gregore is known for being a violent and irresponsible defensive midfielder, despite being an excellent player 99% of the time. He will win clean disputes all day (iirc he is second for most balls stolen as a defensive midfielder in the world rn), makes the midfield almost unpassable, but on that 99th dispute he is gonna just randomly kill someone for no reason. It just so happened to luck that it was the first one he made that day lmao, but it's not an unusual sight to see him getting sent off.

I am of the opinion that if the ball is bellow nipple height of the average player and you go for it with your head, you're the one being reckless If you get kicked in the head, tough luck friend Let's get the medics in there, check for concussion, if you got to the ball first it's a foul, but it's not the other guys fault if you're stupid or lack the flexibility to reach the ball with your foot

I take umbrage with that kick at 7:08 being described as a Hulk Hogan big boot. Not because wrestling is fake, but that Hogan's boot was awful and would have only demanded a yellow card. That was a Test big boot.

The reason why brazilian teams is dominating South America mostly because of money, it's the major reason for the SA-European gap, club level. Althought Brazil's economy is not going well, many other countries are just worst. Better economy and money translate to many important things: training, equipment, travel quality... Also, as intense love for a club and a country is really on it's last legs, even by a stump, players will usually be attracted to a place where they win a higher pay: they tend to come from poverty and have somewhat short carreers that are full of risk, like getting injured, benched and dismissed. This season, many brazilian teams are chockfull of SA players. My Fluminense (yeah, yeah, things are not going well, I know) has 3 colombians (Arias, Fuentes and Serna), 2 uruguayans (Bernal and Terans) and 1 argentinian (Cano), not counting Lucumi (colombian), since he mostly played at junior level due to age and his contract is ending. Also, Europe pays much more attetion here than other SA countries, so to many, coming here is a chance to go play in Europe. Although I'm happy Brazil is vindicated after MANY years of really... Spotty refeeree (the 2018 scandals are just the tip of the iceberg), it's a really sad state. If we had better teams in SA, the quality of the game would be even higher. Sadly, it's not something simple to resolve.

The reason of brazil domination is Claudio "chiqui" Tapia, AFA's president. The greed, incompetence and corruption he manages is inconmesurable and every team in Argentina that was good enough to compete took the bullet(bar Boca and River because they are massive [you could add Racing and in sometime Velez and Estudiantes if they dont fail their proyects]). This year there was a fairy tale run from Peñarol, and here and there a Colombian team, Bolivian team or Independiente del Valle manages to take series from a Brazilian, but if Argentinian temas dont wake up, Brazil will continue to dominate.

Does seeding even matter for this tourney? The one seed rarely wins the final. I love the seeding after the group stage, but there so many upsets still! Pretty cool they don’t use a set bracket anymore, so you can play any team in any round.

Libertadores final should be 2 legs. Dominguez tries to copy everything from Europe but this does not work... distances are absolutely massive, travel is more expensive. And to me it makes sense that Brazilian clubs dominate. They are doing things BETTER in terms of business, they always were talented football wise, plus they have the size advantage: The biggest club in Argentina, after Boca and River, Independiente has like 5/6 million supporters. Small brazilian clubs have that number! Flamengo I think has a fanbase equivalent to the whole argentine population. Those are customers, money.... When you add that Argentina is has been doing things WORSE as a league since like 2012, and specially since Tapia got in charge of AFA, well. Brazilian dominance is a no brainer. Tapia has been Brazilian football greatest asset since Neymar. Cant wait for him to resign until we have a decent league again. Its unbearable. No one cares about the league anymore, just as means to qualify to international tournaments.

1:58 Since 2019, three Portuguese head coaches have won the Copa Libertadores, with one of them winning twice. This success has also translated into the domestic league, where teams are playing with greater tactical quality. However, this situation has become highly controversial due to the nationality of these head coaches and their dominance in the league, leaving many Brazilians with a sense of being dominated by Portugal once again, reminiscent of events from over 200 years ago.
@kats16462 күн бұрын
No one cares about "being dominated by Portugal" lmfao, no one is even thinking about that. In fact many people wanted Abel Ferreira to take the spot of head coach for the national team. Everyone agrees that Brazilian coaches are miles behind foreigners
@petematttttt2 күн бұрын
Who cares? People at the end want to win; Portuguese have strong cultural ties with Brazil which might explain some of their success but for many years it has been the other way around, Brazilians coaches in Portugal (and tons of players), you can only learn when you learn with people that do it differently and that's the reality of Brazilian football these day as it was for Portuguese a few years back. hopefully this movement will bring more knowledge to their managers and national team in the future because such a big nation with such passion really should dominate the game
