Libertadores was so much better years ago. Atmosphere was sick, but they've started to ban everything that made the atmosphere amazing. Flares, fireworks, smoke, etc etc.

El I remember watching Melgar playing against Minero last year in Peru and on tv you can hear the intercom say "please turn off the flares" after Melgar scored the first goal against Minero. Ridiculous what has happened over the few years because of bad apples. I'm waiting since to this day to see Alianza Lima back in Copa Libertadores.

The real reason of the amazing atmosphere of the Libertadores is the fans and the way they chant all game and in a way that only happens here, it's sad that they banned the things you say and it was better that way but the atmosphere in the Copa Libertadores it's still incredible and unique.

Almost Always, the superstars in UCL are from South America. Almost all of them previously played Copa Libertadores. I would love watch UCL teams without the Bosman Law. And see what happen. And I really would love return of the old Intercontinental Cup. 2 matches. Home and away. They were epic battles. Teams like Liverpool did not want to play it because of fear, putting the excuse of the full calendar.

Libertadores needs the good organization of UCL. I dream about seing our competition enveloped, an anthem, a pattern of colors in transmissions, beautiful banners etc. The prize is not very attractive (The state championship of São Paulo gives almost the same money), North American teams can not qualify to Fifa Club World Cup if they win... It has to be better managed. Champions League has an amazing series that shows behind the scenes and interviews with coaches, fans and players. I love that! We deserve a better competition.

Algunas personas se olvidan que los "mejores" clubes de fútbol de otras partes del mundo no serían ni la mitad de lo que son si no fuera por los jugadores sudamericanos que tienen. El fútbol fluye de forma distinta por éstos lados. es mas creativo, contagioso, mas entretenido de ver. acá hay magia y se refleja en éste deporte en particular. Personalmente puedo disfrutar viendo fútbol de cualquier parte del mundo, pero prefiero mil veces ver la Libertadores, Sudamericana, etc.

The two main differences between Copa Libertadores and Champions League are: the teams in the Libertadores are more levelled, meaning that most teams make the same investment in terms of money (Champions League has more money). As a result, the Libertadores is more competitive, it doesn't have the same winner every year like in the Champions League. The last reason is that Libertadores is love, war, passion, lifestyle; Champions League is tourists, theatre, one or two teams have the best roster, and one country (Spain) takes over. In my opinion, the Copa Libertadores is way better than the Champions League!

The football in South America is so much more leveled than European football. Only 3 clubs can win Spanish League, 2 or 3 clubs can win Italian League, 5 or 6 clubs can win English League, only 1 can win German League, but here in Brazil there are at least 9 or 10 clubs that can really win Brazilian League.

I agree, to be a competitive team in Europe you need to spend a lot of money on transfers etc. Only few teams can afford to do that, and this is sad because the difference is getting bigger every year, teams like PSG, Barcelona, Bayern, Real, Juventus or other top premier league teams can easily spend 100 million for one single player, while in my country the league winners Legia Warsaw which is btw the richer team in Poland cannot even spend 2 millions on a player, and this is common for all Eastern Europe and Scandinavia with few exceptions.

It's a more old school form of football, very unpredicatble, decent quality, good atmosphere. In Europe most champions league games 50% of the crowds are either plastics who only show up for CL games or tourists from other countries and continents, and the rest of the supporters are usually just middle class people who are just there to 'watch the game' and just quietly sit there. Real supporters are becoming more rare in the top leagues.

I think most people would find the Libertadores more enjoyable to watch if they gave it a chance because it's nowhere near as elitist as European football. I'd love to see teams from "lesser" footballing countries in Europe have a genuine chance at winning just to make it more interesting.

It's very rewarding for me, as a Brazilian, to watch a video like this, specially because it was made by an European. Obviously, it is hard for you guys - living in 1st world countries - to appreciate the Libertadores. But I think this is exactly what makes it so special for us. Lack of safety and infrastructure; unpredictability, altitude and the passion from the crowds. I wish one day we could make it commercially attractive to tou guys, within losing its South American magic and tradition. Cheers!

Exactly. That's the problem. Back in the day people supported their hometown club and gave everything for it. Nowadays it's just a global brand. I feel sorry for people that really are from Madrid or Barcelona that have to witness how football tourists from all over the world make up a majority of the crowd in their stadium. My club won't win a CL title in my lifetime I think but it's still a better feeling to be in the stands with people from my area that are all united than to be a Bayern or Barca supporter who complains when they don't win high enough. There is a reason why a lot of times smaller teams can create a better atmosphere than those super clubs

Had the pleasure of going to a game in brazil, not during a libertadores game but it was still an experience, the crowd, the atmosphere on and off the pitch around the stadium is more like a festival with supporters and fireworks the whole nine. The team I went to see which was sao paulo fc won that night and the whole place turned into one big party with mosh pits and chants breaking out about 5 times just walking outside the stadium. A riot broke out between two rival supporters groups (for the same team) me and my friend had to run away from the train station and back to get our train back home covering our faces to avoid breathing in tear gas. That night was One of the top best experiences of my life.

Copa Libertadores is dangerous. It’s sometimes feels like a lawless tournament. Referees let more things go and it’s not all that great if you’re a player. If you’re a fan, sure it’s awesome because you’re not the one getting hammered with bottles and coins from the crowd or getting kicked and kneed in the field. The refs also have bias towards certain teams. It’s a great tournament but it can also get out of hand at times.

I have lived in Uruguay and I must say that the football culture in Uruguay is insane. It is ingrained in the everyday social fabric. I cannot put it in words. I went to several several Libertadores games, pre games and national team games. Peñarol, Nacional, Defensor, Racing, Tanque de Sisley, etc... There so many good footballers that they work regular jobs. We knew national team players, we had a friend who played 1st division in Mexico (dropped to Ascenso), and even had a 1st division player work a kids party for us. The football culture was great. I have been in Europe as well and its just different . European football has its following while in Uruguay, football is culture.

Tony Harley Naah, in my opinion, those european "underdogs" are irrelevant and wont make a difference. When was the last time one of them ever reached the finals or even win the Champions League? The last time was in 2004 between Porto and Monaco, and never again. Its not the same as in South America, where underdogs constantly make it to the finals. In my opinion, the Champions League will benefit from not having so much irrelevant competitors that rarely ever do anything significant. And in case someone tries to argue "but here UEFA referees always rob underdogs from deserved wins"...dude, Im from South America and I can attest that referee robberies here are as rampant as in Europe. You're not really missing much over there. Just the last year Atletico Nacional from Colombia had it's share of suspicious moments in it's path to winning the title.

There is no other tournament like the Libertadores. I remember when in 2010 my team, Internacional de Porto Alegre advanced to the quarter finals to face current champions Estudiantes. Our stadium had almost 60,000 people chanting during the 90 minutes and with several red flares, creating a hell, and even tough we were not playing well, we won 1-0. The second leg was played on a small stadium also filled up but Inter played even worse and by 20 minutes we were losing 2-0. At 80 minutes the Estudiantes fans began using their flares and the smoke made vision impossible. Also both teams had white on their kits, so on the TV it was horrible to see. As they celebrated, Inter scored a crucial away goal att 93 minutes and went to the semi-finals, eventually winning the championship. It was fucking amazing. The Estudiantes fans began throwing rocks in the field and after the match the players engaged on a fight. It still give me chills.

I agree with that. Mls teams have some quality but will take years to them to win it because its much more than just playing football. But to give mls teams a space in the copa we have to take the space from other teams from south america and i dont like that '-'. Obviously we cant have a copa with 100 teams.

Offloyd Domain It's actually because the calendar was too crammed up. With the new CONCACAF CL format, it should be easier for Mexican clubs to return. Mexican clubs have actually done pretty decently and have been runner ups several times. Pachuca won the Copa Sudamericana, which is basically the Latin American 'Europa League'.
