Also you don't have to live there or come from there to totally understand it. I used to travel a 450 mile round trip for every home game from Glasgow and I know and fully understand most things about the rivalry having spent most of my summers as a wee lad in and around Manchester. My grandfather had a league match ticket book there and @ City. In places in between Liverpool and Manchester the rivalry is different to others as they have to live side by side. There's plenty of banter but often they are mates. In Dublin/Ireland the rivalry is there, but without the violence. My point is that you do not have to live there to understand it and I am living proof. GGMU. LUHG.

It is not as angry, and tense as Glasgow Celtic v Glasgow Rangers. But it is a passionate working class derby, based on football alone. I think Liverpool and Man Utd are by far the two most successful English sides. I am proud Scotland has had such a big connection with them, with Shankly, Fergie, Law, Dalglish and Souness.

Another thing not mentioned in the video is the little known fact that the song "You'll never walk alone" was in fact sung by the United fans until a Liverpool band called Gerry and the pacemakers recorded it. Liverpool started to play it over laud speakers and then their crowd started singing it.

For intensity and passion The West Ham/Millwall game takes some beating but they have only played once in 12 years. 55 years since I first went in September 1962. Especially at The OLD Stadiums.The OLD DEN and The OLD Upton Park took some beating for atmosphere under lights where the crowd stood right over the pitch.

Liverpool is by far the better city. Liverpool has kept its identity. For example Anfield on a Saturday afternoon is still the same as it was in the 60s,70s and 80s. Whereas Manchester is full of day trippers and is the best example of a modern day stadium. Coming of football you’ve got the Beatles and oasis. The Beatles are a 100 times bigger than oasis. No one In America recognizes oasis whereas the Beatles were the best thing since sliced bread and when the Beatles split up it was one of the worst days America has had.

That amazing inland waterway came about because Manchester, where cotton was king, became increasingly frustrated at having to import raw materials through the great port on the Mersey, and paying what they saw as exorbitant handling fees. The Mancunian industrialists got together and bought up a corridor of land from the Wirral all the way to Salford, so that shipping could by-pass Liverpool entirely.
