I had a transmission not go into overdrive because of low voltage and after replacing the alternator it went to shifting right once more also the low voltage cause several other things to not function correctly. So change the alternator before you try to replace anything else.

Definitely. The first thing is to solve the charging problem, reset the computer, and proceed from there.

Absolutely - as voltage drops is can play havoc with the systems. I had a VW with airbag codes, cooling fan codes, all due to the battery being run to flat. Sort the charging, clear the codes then run the drive cycles to get the true picture 👍

The alternator should put out 14 volts and 100 amps under load to run that car.

@@mikewiebers8814 Yeah, they *are* wonderful. They get better mileage, generally last longer and help diagnose the problem when they aren't. Old cars are great and all, but for 95% of my driving give me something that gets 30 MPG, will idle all day in 90 degree weather with the A/C on and doesn't require me to adjust something every couple thousand miles...

The first-generation RX300 we're over built like the Land Cruiser. Designed to last a minimum of 25 years. We had a customer come in looking for a replacement for his RX after the transfer case locked up at 483k. The transfer case made it that far on it's original fluid. If it wasn't for the interior being completely worn out he would have had it repaired.

I love seeing these haters on here, all the man is doing is buying otherwise dead cars, bringing them back to life for others to enjoy at a great value. Maybe he makes a few bucks or loses a little. And then KZbin pays him to document the whole experience for us to enjoy love/hate. The man is doing what he loves!

The knock sensor went out on a V6 '91 Toyota 4Runner that I was working on for a family member. I drilled a hole in the engine lift bracket and mounted the knock sensor to the lift mount. Enough vibration to fake out the computer. Vibration of the knock sensor causes a small amount of voltage that indicates to the computer that the sensor is o.k. I spliced a new line into the ECU for the knock sensor. No need to remove the heads.

The knock sensor is going to be difficult because a lot of the bolts are hard to get to (one on the back of the plenum). Might as well change the back spark plugs/ ignition coils while the plenum is off because they are back there too. Just did the exact same repair and it can be done in 5 hours or so but it is very frustrating. Make sure to get a new knock sensor wiring loom because that might be the problem (the plastic coating suffers because of the heat of being that close to the engine).

Have a 2001 Highlander, practically the same as this one, Identical issue of not shifting due to a bad knock sensor, i saw a video and jumped the bank one with the bank 2 sensor and the CEL is gone and it drives fine, This thou is just a temporary fix till i pull time to get the plenum off and install a new sensor. The Knock sensor wire harness comes out on the right towards the drivers side and connects into a plug just like an O2 sensor. If the codes are cleared it will drive just fine for a few kms and then trigger the CEL, after a few kms will not shift to overdrive. Good luck.,

As someone who has done a knock sensor job on a Lexus, I can tell you that it’s a tedious job but it’s not that bad. Also, like others have pointed out in the comments, you’ll need to change the coolant crossover hose while you’re in there. Good preventative maintenance and the hose itself isn’t expensive, even if you source it from a Toyota dealer. You’ll probably also need the mini harness for the knock sensors as well. Another thing is I would be skeptical about using cheap knock sensors on these cars. I did buy cheap ones from 1A-auto.com for my Lexus years back and it worked fine, just something to be careful about.
