*Well, in Europe (I live in the Netherlands) cars from VAG (VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda & Seat) are most common.* VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) made pretty reliable cars back in the beginning and still when VW just bought Audi and Skoda. Almost all the '80 en '90 cars are bulletproof. Around 2000 the quality went down. The golf and Jetta back then had bad interiors, but the engines where fine. Automatics broke down around 150k. Later when the golf V and VI came the engine problems started too. The horrible TSI, TFSI, and GTDI came too. And the early DSG automatics are notorious for breaking down. If you wanna guess on a VAG product, then buy a manual or a very new one with DSG. Never buy a New Beetle and the 5V 1.8, VR6 and 1.9TDI are the best engines from the past 20 years that VAG produced.

@@smartinvesting813 VW group sells the biggest amount of car in Europe, saying that they are unreliable is bullshit.. I had 1 golf 3 from 1994, 1 golf 4 from 1998, 1 passat from 2017 no issue at all. + Usually easy to fix and cheap as they share parts between Audi, Seat, Skoda, etc.

@@iliaslamari7315 I was given a '90 VDP with the 4L, black w/ AEE-code doeskin interior. People have asked me if I work on Jag's, but these are the 'change over' year. ATE-sourced ABS brakes. Hitachi & Bosch electrics, very little Lucas (and seemingly dependable). Getrag trans...completely a different animal than the '89-down versions for sure. Another fun thing is that there is a lot of interchange upgrades you can do from the X300 & X308 chassis; if the power train ever dies in mine, it will get an LS swapped in. But done in emulation of the Jag credo of "Space, grace & pace." Nothing dumber than a hacked in SB 350 with a carb, rusty headers, rat's nest of wiring. I call them "Hill Billy Hot Rods."

They don't have weak transmissions at all. They are a GM Turbo 400s. The V12s don't wear out rings either and don't suffer high oil consumption. They are an incredibly long lived engine and the car falls apart around the motor. Yes to all the other thing you said about them though. How do I know all this? Must be because I'm a Jaguar mechanic. People talk so much crap about these cars - A LOT DESERVED I admit because they can be frustrating but those things you said about the engines and transmissions is incorrect. Almost but not quite 100% incorrect in fact. read on There was a 12.5:1 HE V12 at the beginning of the HE engines. Some of these suffered broken pistons due to a unforseen circumstances. What would happen?, lots of city driving would cause some carbon deposits which was OK in almost all countries except Germany. In Germany if you had carbon and then hit the autobahn at full throttle the motor would detonate and blow the ring lands out of the pistons. If you slowly built up speed it would burn off the carbon and all would be well. What Jaguar did was lower the comp to 11.1:1 on all HE engines and the motor would still rattle a bit but not cause any trouble. Those motors after many many miles still have perfect cylinder bores with the hone cross hatching still apparent. The crankshaft journals are so incredibly hard they hardly ever need grinding unless something has scoured them and even then it is almost always never deep enough to worry about - just the bearings replacing on the original journal - not too many motors like that around let me say. The nitriding process is exceptional as is the quality of the forged steel crankshaft. The pre HE V12 had bearings that weren't as good as later bearings. Those older V12s would rumble in the big ends when the bearing were worn out. The bloody crank journals would still be perfectly fine though. The bearings on those older V12s, the tri metal bearing surface would be completely warn off, and the base material would now be the bearing surface but still the crank journals would be OK. Very very hard. V12s have near perfect primary and secondary balance. They do suffer a little torsional vibration and it is not unknown for the crankshaft front balancer bolt to need tightening but usually pretty rare, though I used to see it from time to time. The tappets hardly ever need adjusting, they don't overheat as people say, though if you burst a hose and cook the motor the rings don't like that much, nor do the valve seat inserts. Before you slang off about Jags I humbly submit you stick to facts rather than hearsay of disgruntled ex owners because some people out there might know more than you and it could get embarrasing lol. Not that I've ever been embarrased by stupid things I've said (I'm being sarcastic - I've been caught out quite a few times)

GM voids the warranty on vehicles with salvage or reconstructed titles. Ran into this issue with a Chevy truck. If the vehicle passes a states enhanced inspection and is issued a reconstructed title, GM will honor certain safety recall items only. No warranty. As soon as the service dept. ran the VIN on the truck for approval it kicked back. Offered a discount on parts as a courtesy but the dealer would not touch it. Spear Chevrolet in Pa.. Wise move keeping red truck. It will serve you better.

That Jag, depending on the year the tranny may be a BW Type 12. The later ones were GM TH-400. The stupid type 12 has no kickdown from 2-1. Also they are a very harsh shifting transmission. Under light throttle they actually clunk but they are reliable peculiarly enough. If you go around a corner or up a side street in top gear and floor it, it will not go into 1st automatically - you have to pull it back but the shifter gate is one of the most counter intuitive shifter gates man could possibly design. Turbo 400 started in 77 was much better but too much mass for the V12s characteristics so made it sluggy off idle up to about 3000rpm esp with the airconditioning on. After 3000rpm they go really well as you'd expect a V12 to go. As you no doubt already know the turbo 400 will kick down to 1st and even though the Jaguar Turbo 400 is in a Jaguar case (unfortunately) it is just the same internally as any other th400.

@@AutoAuctionRebuilds maybe there but not here. GM dealers here have that info on dealership computer systems and if it shows up as a previous total loss they will not honor factory warranty just as they will not honor factory warranty on salvage parts. As previous Mississippi Collision Repair vice president for 4 years many of these issues on warranty were addressed specifically by OEM reps from all the manufacturers. Nationally as a member of Coalition for Collision Repair Excellence, ASE and others, this issue has been addressed by OEM reps also. Consider yourself lucky.

1.4.14 - Voided Warranties and Branded Titles The New Vehicle Limited Warranty is void on any vehicle with a title that has currently or previously been branded as salvage, scrap, junk, totaled, etc. Through state vehicle registration records, GM receives branded title listings periodically which in-turn are used to update the warranty system file. Only claims for repairs covered by the Emissions Warranty and/or recall will be processed. All GM Dealer's (excluding Saab) are to access the GMVIS system in order to qualify warranty coverage. Customers who wish to challenge a voided or branded title should be directed to GM Customer Assistance.

Also, weighing in on the Jetta. It's a 2.5 "S" trim car, pretty basic, but the 2.5 5 CYLINDER is a good engine. They're bulletproof reliable besides the vacuum pump seal ($250 at a shop, $40-$100 in parts), and the transmission valve body is known to go out on the earlier cars. For reference, I drive a 2009 Jetta 2.5 SE with 118k, had it almost 3 years since 92k and I love it. It's been trouble free besides the vacuum pump.

Need some blank keys and key FOBs as well from junkyards (order just the transponder chips, they are small) then you replace the ignition with junkyard key and program a transponder and sometimes you can program the junkyard key, glue a transponder chip next to the ignition and you will never have to worry about a transponder key again or lost keys.

Man I don't know why but I think you're so bass ackwards, gets excited over a piece of crap impala and a Cadillac northstar but bashes Audi and vw. As far as warranty on salvage cars good luck, the warranty gets voided automatically

I agree stay away from vw. I currently atm have a 2004 vw Passat 1.8t and I just keep having to dump money into it to keep it running, most recently a massive collent leaked out of the head gasket and he y pipe that comes out the back of the head. I highly recommend stay away from the German vehicles

I had a second generation Golf and it was such fun to drive. It wasnt fast but it was just fun and very solid. Unfortunately it had dirt in all kinds of places I couldnt clean as someone had driven it down a lot of dirt roads. Still it was a great little car. It was ex South Africa. Not long before I sold it I found a kind of hidden compartment that still had the original manuals and maps for South Africa. (I am in New Zealand).

Go for that Eldorado. One of my friends has a 98 Eldorado with the Northstar aka deathstar with almost 400,000 miles and it's still going. She's been lucky with that car.

The Deathstar engine came out in '93 in the Eldos, Sevilles, and Allante's. The Devilles had them after '95, I believe. I HATE that body style Eldo, but I do like that one due to the color and condition. Buy something.

If any of your cars need brakes you should do power stop pads. Big difference. They stop great. I've gotten them from rockauto.

My first vw was a 2001Jetta VR6. Then I decided not to keep it and bought a 2008 Jetta 2.5 brand new. I had it up until last month when I wrecked it. It had 167k and she ran real good. I bought a mark 4 20th anniversary GTI and I love that car. I also have an Audi S3 that I bought to replace wrecked Jetta. Every Volkswagen that I have/had has something in common. They’re all built in Germany. Mexican built Volkswagens are pretty junk.
