Denmark's historic old stock exchange building in the centre of Copenhagen has been engulfed by fire.
The 17th Century Børsen is one of the city's oldest buildings and onlookers gasped as its iconic spire collapsed in the flames.
Everyone inside the building was able to leave and people rushed to rescue some of its historic paintings.

This building was not just an iconic national symbol and landmark built by Denmark’s most renowned king; it housed hundreds of invaluable paintings, thousands of manuscripts, documents, and tomes, as well as sculptures and priceless artifacts created by Europe's legendary artists and artisans through 400 years. The rooms themselves, masterpieces of artistry, were the sites of many of Denmark’s most crucial, destiny-altering decisions made by famed figures. The magnitude of this tragedy cannot be overstated-it is a profound loss not just for Denmark, but for Europe as a whole. Four hundred years of the richest forms of European culture and history have gone up in flames.

I guess when Danes can't deliver their ill-gotten gains back from where they looted them (with them being burned and all). Danes may have to pay compensation for the loss of these treasures to the cultures from where they pillaged them from.

So why on earth didn't they put it all into storage elsewhere during renovation work? It's only a couple of years since exactly the same thing happened to Notre Dame, so it would have been an obvious precaution to take. This really could have been avoided. There will be a lot of difficult questions to answer by whoever signed off the risk assessment.

@@TheSuperolleman I'm really sorry to read that. 😢 You have no idea how interested in this story I am. For months and months now, I've been looking into the phenomenon of fires "destroying" stone structured buildings from "the old world", mostly because of the questioned true age of these buildings. There's (just to give one specific example) a KZbin channel called "My Lunch Break" which is looking specifically at the topic of old world building fires at this very moment in its series. I am ABSOLUTELY interested in this case - even though I'm unfamiliar with this building personally, I can see exactly why it's as important to you and many, many others, as it is. I think the structure was weakened during the course of its "renovation", which could explain why the building was covered in a tarpaulin - to conceal what was really happened there. Now's the time to collect as much evidence of the past of the building - photos, videos, "records" of its construction, other previous "fires" [in the location], scale models etc. And to find out *precisely* what caused the fire, and how parts of the building such as the spire (which I'm presuming was made of stone?), are able to be detached by being burnt in a fire. If by some extraordinary effort it's able to be returned to its original configuration _(somehow),_ that will help many of us, I'm sure.

400 year old wood in 400 years of oil and varnish, covered in 400 years of dust with wires that's are who knows how old. Yeah as an ex fireman, these fires are unfortunately time bombs in all these old historical buildings. Money on during the work some of these old wires got frayed and exposed and arched. Which set the dust and waste on fire which ignited the wood and with such a heavy old fire load got hot enough to ignite the metals

Copenhagen central station ( Hovedbanegården ) is also an old ( 1911 ) stylish building. Some repair works were carried out in 1986 in one side of the big hall where the local electric trains pass ( S-tog after German Schnell-Bahn ) The workmen had a big jar with remnants of paint and thinner liquid. The vapors of such liquids spread quickly and are very inflammable. Somebody probably smoked a cigarette nearby and the jar went up in flames. Yet the fire was put out after a short time because the main Copenhagen fire brigade ( Hoved-Brandstationen København ) is merely five minutes away. That side of the Central Station was completely renovated in the original style. * The distance from the main fire station to the Stock Exchange from 1622 ( Børsen ) is merely a ten minutes drive whereby it is odd that the entire building burned down. Why odd ? Because clerks were working in the building and they no doubt called the fire brigade the minute they smelled sharp smoke. * The building is about a hundred meters long. Thus if the fire started merely in one place and even in an open jar with inflammable liquids it should have been possible for the well equipped fire brigade ( powerful monitors and water cannons , high extension ladders ) to save large portions of the building. * There was a similar fishy fire two years ago in outer Copenhagen ( Grøndals-parken ). Four long blocks each with flats in four stores from about 1935 all caught fire simultaneously in the dry wooden lofts with lumber-rooms. When the fire brigade from a nearby local station ( Tomsgården Brandstation ) arrived 15 minutes later they had no chance of saving any part. * Everybody left their apartments in time nobody was injured. If you watch the films from that fire here on KZbin you will admit that the fire cannot have started in one lumber-room and then spread to the lumber-rooms in the other three blocks. Because in that case some lumber rooms would have been completely ashes while others almost intact when the brigade arrived. There was only little wind that day. See: "Grøndals Parkvej brand" or "Hvordan går 90 lejligheder i brand på rekordtid" How do 90 flats all catch fire in no time (a record time ). That question has never been answered and probably never will be neither for the Stock Exchange because such violent fires conveniently delete all traces , footsteps and fingerprints. * Yet it is a nice place there is a several kilometers long park across the road where I used to toboggan in the winter as a child. My guess is that new buildings with expensive condos will be built by some big property-owner. * Let's see whether the government sells the piece of land where the Stock Exchange was and what will be built there and by whom. Sagen stinker.

@@EnjoyFirefighting that’s why it was great that the Royal Guard litterally ran from their base in Gothersgade, to assist the emergency department. As well as the many civilians on the street who dropped everything to also help recovering the paintings and other art pieces that was saved from the flames. My office is across the street from Christiansborg, which is right next to Børsen. In my building there’s a restaurant, and it only takes a little too much smoke in the kitchen, before the whole building has to get out of there (it has happened quite a few times). And every time, a couple of minutes later, there are two fire trucks who are driving up to the building. The buildings are old and they are clearly not taking any chances. So they have everything under control, even without a volunteer fire department.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 10 күн бұрын
@@christinaj.jensen4805 nice, but shouldn't be necessary ... and it would be an insurance nightmare in case sth would've happened to the civilians. It's not just about this large fire ... it's about any kind of large scale scenario, anything from floods and storm damages, fires (both in apartment houses, large commercial buildings or industrial buildings), pile-up accidents, train accidents, aircraft accidents ... it's important to have lots of manpower and equipment to cover extraordinary scenarios and incidents besides the daily business. Although unlikely, imagine how they'd handle if a 2nd large scenario happens at the same time ... "nd every time, a couple of minutes later, there are two fire trucks who are driving up to the building" yeah that's standard. One of many minor incidents which turn out to be false alarms. Same here. Standard response for a fire alarm in my old home town was 5 fire trucks, 2 ambulances, 1 doctor car, 1 police car - but that's daily business. They still need support from the volunteer FD in case of super busy moments or major incidents "they are clearly not taking any chances. " they sure are. They don't even have a larger on-scene command post, right?

Close, but parliament was not in danger, the parliament became a comfortzone for the employed staff at the Stock Exchange. It is estimated that 40 % of the Stock Exchange was saved from the fire due to the firemens professional skills.A lot of the paintings, artefacts and documents from the period was saved and will undergo a restauration proces.
