Microsoft made some recent changes to Windows 11 which abuses privacy in multiple ways. But remember that Microsoft is not alone. The move to break our privacy with AI is something the competion started with first. Now they're playing catch up but doing so in the most aggressive way with the help of OpenAI.

This is nightmarish. If you torrent, now the AI knows what you download and from where. If you use a VPN now the AI knows when and how and where you prefer to connect. And what sites you go to. If you use Tor. If you have a set of websites you like to frequent, it now knows even if you do browser isolation and dont login to Google. And on and on and fucking on. The abuse potential is unfuckinglimited.

Same here, when it becomes impossible to run windows 7 on any new PC I probably will stop doing .NET development and go full Linux. This tendency at Microsoft to emulate abuses that are happening on mobile platforms and apple devices and become heralds of any new crappy trend is too much for users to keep turning a blind eye on their abuse and incompetence. Games are no longer a valid reason to be forced to use their OS (unless one is a hardcore gamer that absolutely must run every new title that comes out, steam is good enough to have enough of a gaming library), productivity software has long been up to date on Linux, the only leverage Microsoft still has comes from large active directory deployments but even those have decent enough (lacking in options and policy integration at every level of the OS and software but good enough for most use cases) Linux equivalents. Too bad for them but they won't be missed after this persistence in being abusive. Morality of this is: don't invest time learning software systems that are going to disappear.

@@ianmciver7719 You don't have to "look into" Linux. Why have you not spun up a Linux VM, used Windows subsystem for Linux, or simply burned an iso to a thumb drive? All you have to do is boot into the thumb drive and boom, you're in Linux. It isn't difficult. I installed a new drive and installed Linux onto that drive. I left my Windows drive installed in my machine. I haven't booted into my Windows drive in months. But it's still there if I want it. But even if you aren't ready to use it as a primary drive, it is comically easy to get it running and see what it feels like.

The problem with this new type of control is enormous, because while it is true that I can use a Linux distro that is as safe as possible, but a real danger remains, that is... What happens when I pass on data, private information, projects, works , or simply chat, for work or friendship with someone who doesn't care about their privacy or that of others? the kind of person who says things like "I have nothing to hide anyway". Or without doing it directly, that someone has information about me on their PC, such as photos taken the previous summer, medical data, why they are in a hospital, or a thousand other ways. Now there is no more opposition, things happen, and no one opposes or tries to remedy it legally, it is very serious, we live in the era of laxity.

You're wrong about which devices are getting Copilot. I have an older Shuttle DS81 mini with a Intel 4790K Devils Canyon, Window 11 Pro, and it auto installed Copilot on it about a month or so ago. Rob, People should have realized what Microsoft was up to 5 years ago. The fact that Windows control was getting more granular should have been the big tell as to their overall plan to control and monitor everything we do on our PCs. Microsoft does nothing for their client base that doesn't ultimately benefit them. There is always a selfish motive. MS has just slit their own throut on this one.

It's good, useful tech, as far as the idea, but of course you can't trust the corporations to implement it without weaponizing it. I want this tech on my Linux machines... key logging, screenshots, memory, AI, second brain, but all fully open source, private, and in my control. Downplaying the usefulness of this tech is a mistake. That it is so insanely useful is part of what makes it so dangerous. Instead of thinking to avoid it, we should be thinking how we can get it in an acceptable form without the security nightmare, and with adequate solutions to privacy concerns (like limiting or removing its ability to store sensitive data via a setting).

After all these privacy-threats happening ,what I’m about to say might think as a joke to people but I’m deadly-serious when I say it since marketing is a key-factor for a purchase-decision : PC( *PERSONAL* computer) is a term that shouldn’t be applied for those new models coming since this term is misleading the customers. They can call it BP(borrowed computer) or LP( licensed computer) whatever ,I don’t know ,but the are certainly *NOT (PCs)PERSONAL* computers anymore since our data are not personal anymore when they a program takes photos and logs for every private move we make ,every password we type etc and then stores it in *places hidden from the customer ,meaning that the owner of the “Personal” Computer doesn’t have a decision-option over those actions* Something must be done *legally* about this misleading term ,it was proper in the past years but from now on ,sadly the term “PC” is misleading for the customers.

@laylasmart 3 ай бұрын
@@robbraxmantech Exactly, Zorin makes Windows users feel like at home without being on Windows, and it also have many things install as default like Windows App Support and PipeWire so windows software which do not have a Linux version will work there. For general knowledge about the reason that made made move to Zorin is that I got a new laptop with Windows 11 on it, and when I tried to install Windows 10, I needed to get an external drivers so Windows will be able to identify the NVME drive, and after I finished the installation, I got the Blue Screen Of Death. With Zorin, the installation was easy. No external drivers were needed. The laptop was quickly running. Since I have some excellent third party software both for Audio and Video which are windows and mac only. The only issue is to know how to run them with Wine and Bottles which I do not know anything about. So even If I'll find an equivalent software on Linux at the same level or even better, I have too many things I did with those software on windows and I cannot give them up. I hope that everything will work well with Zorin. I look at it as an adventure. We have until the end of 2025 when Microsoft will stop Windows 10 support, so I think until then I will get some control over Linux and it's terminal to be able to leave Windows forever. One thing is for sure, Microsoft announcement on AI and Recall which made me move to Linux and tell people all over to use Linux. I do not think that there's a better to promote Linux and give everyone a reason to move to Linux. So right now, Zorin is a winning horse for Windows users. Later on, we can try different flavors of Linux. People simply want to be able to do their craft without the hassle of a greedy and controlling company. Any Linux distro that will give a person the needed tools for doing the craft, that distro will be used by that person, and that's fine.

The problem is that the majority of people is relatively tech illiterate and don't even realize or care about this, which is scary because as long as the companies keep getting money and there is no real backlash they will keep doing whatever they want. I feel that as the internet became popular and monetized it became crap, I used to search and find a lot of information on the internet about 15 years ago, now i cant find anything like before, I feel like Im in a chamber were I walk in circles and I only get the same results over and over, what the algorithm thinks I might be interested in to maximize profit.

I deleted co-pilot from my MS W11 OS, had no need for it. I'm a writer and publisher of books on physics, astrophysics, quantum mechanics and more. If they are keylogging the books I write and someone else hacks my computer and publishes my work before I do, then can't MS be sued for not keeping my data safe, allowing my work to be stolen, violating my copyrights?

That's the thing, Microsoft is positioning itself as safeguarding data and promoting cybersecurity in enterprise environments. The Sentinel, Defender ATP suite is built to purpose for this, and many companies (including mine) are viewing this cybersecurity package, along with Intune for MDM and MAM. They view the visibility into endpoints as part of their DLP and data protection plan. Mind you, I can see in the Sentinel portal, everything you are doing. I can see in Defender every application and plug in installed on your device. I can see what IP you are logging in from and what devices and locations you are using. It can even flag for me when you sign in from an unusual location, say, from a VPN. It shows me the location you're logging in from. All of this is being tied in to DLP - what device did you log in from? What is the device ID? Why are you signing in from an iPhone 12 when you were using an iPhone 10? Why did you sign in from an iPad? Is that your primary device? Also, your .NET framework is out of date and subject to this CVM with a vulnerability score of 9.3.....you really should remediate that by removing this specific filepath identified by Defender as having this vulnerability installed on this specific device. And so on. Microsoft has integrated itself as a DLP and malware management platform for enterprises. And it does this THROUGH scanning and detecting unusual activity. This is what cybersecurity is. It isn't isolation - it's a comprehensive, secure monitoring platform that your network and security administrators can see. And we want to be able to wipe your company data and we want administrative access to your personal phone with Outlook and Microsoft Authenticator installed on the device.

I highly recommend choosing Debian for many reasons, the most important one being that some distributions have less chances of still being actively maintained in a not so distant future, the other being their packaging system and the long vetting time during which every new version of a package has to remain in testing before being allowed into the stable release.

Today like yesterday we say "install Linux, and you will no longer have problems", but a neophyte who approaches it for the first time is being given the illusion of a perfect world. Even on Linux you need to pay a lot of attention "nowday". Some Linux distros like Ubuntu, bypass ATP and use Snap even if you don't want it, they pose just as much potential risk. Certain software can only be installed via snap, and there begins the problem, and even if you don't use snap you would be forced.

The reason why I left Linux and moved to using Windows was for doing programming using the Win32 API, the Microsoft compiler, and the COM library for creating desktop applications on Windows. Also because Windows has built in support for the AutoHotKey programming language, which Linux doesn't have, as far as I know. Also Linux doesn't have full support for OneNote either. It only has support for the OneNote web editor, which is not so full fledged, and is very cumbersome to use.

Thank you Rob for opposing all those abuses. Sadly this understanding of how unacceptable this all is will probably not reach a mainstream audience any time soon as non tech savvy people are usually very important society members that do not have any time to spare on such nerdy considerations, but eventually Microsoft will fade away because of this abusive attitude where customers are treated like idiots that do not matter. I have mixed feelings about this prediction as the love/hate relationship we all have to that company is an integral part of computer history but it seems like a necessity at this point.
