Can you expound some more about the cable not having speed?

It's a hunk of copper. It just sits there. It has no speed. The signal on the cable is the thing that has a speed.

@professormesser Thanks for replying. The signal is the actual category? If not, why then label the cable like that?

The road isn't the measurement of speed. The car engine determines how fast you will go. The category is a description of the cable's capabilities. The category ensures the cable can support a particular signal type. Different Ethernet standards require different categories of cable, depending on how fast they need to go. For example, The IEEE standard for 1000BASE-T describes a 1 gigabit speed of Ethernet. The standard specifies you need a minimum of a category 5 cable to support this speed.

@@professormesser I do get the road analogy, but the explanation about in the next paragraph kinda throwing me off. I'm really trying to understand this because I don't just want to pass the exam, but to fully grasp the concepts. I'm a hobbyist running a small WISP I started up and this is very important to me. With that said, let's say a Cat 4 can only facilitate a 10 Mph speed, and a cat 5 can take a max of 100 Mph...wouldn't it be fair to say the cable determines the speed? What am I missing?

I've always associated Ethernet to RJ45 because I always hear Ethernet cable. Was I incorrect?

I believe so, Ethernet could be as much fiber as RJ45 as any other type of connector/cabling, as long as it's a wired connection.
