I've been wondering, if this kind of lap disc could be used to sharpen and polish very tiny carving and graving tools.... What is the general rule of thumb when using a metal lap disc and charging it with diamond paste? I have noticed that there a copper, bronze, zinc and aluminum readily available. Does the metal need to be softer for harder objects to polish or should the lap be harder as well for harder objects?

with copper I always get 90% through polish and they it scratches. I don't have this issue with wood laps, & I they don't take 8 business days to prep and maintain.

Over time I came to the conclusion that copper is a good medium for a cutting lap, for sure. As a polishing lap it shines at first but over time it picks up bits of material and causes scratching, much like you've experienced.

Is there a cleaning paste that you can use for alloy, stainless and zinc laps?
@Hedbrant24 ай бұрын
I'm new to all this. So basically I use the diamond paste of whatever grit I want on that particular polishing lap, and then I always stick with the same grit on that lap?
@gemsbyjohnny4 ай бұрын
Yes. Once the diamond has embedded itself, there is no way to remove it from the lap unless you resurface it. Stick to the same grit. You can use coarser grit diamond on that lap if you want to convert your lap to that grit exclusively for some reason in the future.

I've got a couple of copper laps that I need to charge. But every time I try I get this horrendous screeching harmonic. Any recommendations for dealing with that? or should I just scrap these ones and get replacements?

@@gemsbyjohnny thx ,do you know how can I used it for frosted edges with copper lab ? All the copper lab are same or not ?
@YukonJack6 ай бұрын
@@gemsbyjohnnyI see the lap is about $43. I don't have any laps and I'm curious if the time, effort, and cost of this is better than buying a factory lap. Thank you.

I used them for over 50 years, then I made them, then I moved on to something better.
