Not necessarily. Loads of them might have committed an offence a block away and the cop stopped them for that once the area was more clear and safe to do so. Others could have blipped on the ANPR for no insurance, expired registration etc.

They are in the air for a few reasons: to be already in air for a speed chase (when called, there is no need to start a helicopter and get the chase started), they check for other suspicious activities that ground units are unable to see (rooftop rumble prevention), and they check if the ground units are safe and sound. The helicopters are already out because otherwise, police won't even call them because ''they are too expensive''. Another reason is that it takes helicopters too long to arrive. You are basically saying ''police helicopters shouldn't be called because they are too expensive. Just let criminals get away''. Which is obviously not an opinion. You make it seem like you think there is only 1 police helicopter flying around through California and you make it seem like they are only after cars? You thought Hollywood is a peaceful, non-crime-area? You thought all these people portrayed became rich without crimes being committed? Whatever you say, it's laughable. My dad is a police officer so I'll snitch on any criminal. If you wouldn't snitch on someone even though the person committed a crime; you (and your ideas) are the reason why the government has to pay so much for law enforcement (such as CSI, police helicopters, ground units, FBI, CIA, IRS, etcetera). Police helicopters are there so that the police and citizens are left off safe than sorry.

real reply 8 months later it's just common back since you don't know what the other person in the car will do, like this person who stole a UPS truck had a shotgun with him kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ3ZhqKBpJtngdk they will also swing out and sometimes block the person but mostly it's in case if the person has a gun and starts shooting at cops as well they try to bring chases down as fast as possible. so the people who speed don't end up killing someone the helicopter is always there to guide the police around every corner and can follow people if they jump out on front and report to the other police which way the suspect went. so even if the cops that drive lost them, the helicopter will always be following. it's dangerous to live as a cop people who think cops have it easily don't realize people want cops dead so you have to pretty much look out for your team as well and have the safest outcome.

Years ago - there was a man I knew who owned a Lambo Countach Anniversary edition - he had this exotic in front of his business on display with the doors open. People would walk up to it, look it all over, take photos and then sit in it while they had their photos taken. Very bizarre since the Lambo wasn't all that old. I went into the store to ask him why he was allowing it. This is what he told me. " That Godddamn thing - I hate it! I want to get rid of it, but no one wants it!" Asking the price and why he hated it he added. " I'm asking $79,000 and the reason why is because, every time I drive it, I get a ticket. In the last six months, I have gotten 5 tickets and am now 1 point away from losing my license. Hell if I start it up in the driveway, the cops instantly show give me a citation for something." They can pull you over for once - to search your car if everythings okay with the car, to control you if you're drunk or if you took drugs, but anything else, they have to let you drive. Why do US Cops pull people over for accelerating hard? As long as it's under the speed limit, it's fully legal i'd think?

@Michał Korczewski Could be multiple reasons to make contact aka pull over a vehicle. Officers need probable cause/PC to do so and it could be something they found while running the license plate, dispatch call, vehicle violation, etc. Tons of reasons and unless you’re an officer on duty during the stop or call one would never know. Makes me laugh when people assume (which is totally normal) the cops are just being assholes or have nothing better to do. Hope this helps man.

@@NODAK9 I get what you mean, but in most cases the cops seem to be assholes, oh he accelerated, let's pull him over. When they don't accelerate and get pulled over your reasons seem legit.

@Michał Korczewski Unfortunately most people only see the confrontational stops. And obviously I wasn’t there or know the back story to most of them. Also there’re not only state, federal laws but each city within a state may have different ordinances (legalities). There’re different departments in each state too albeit city police, county sheriffs department or state patrol each have their own policies and procedures. My point being that just because it looks like they didn’t do anything to warrant being stopped doesn’t mean that’s the case. *I’m speaking about the US.

I mean sure, you're compromising your reaction time to someone stepping out into the street... or opening their door and not expecting someone to come blasting up at mach 10... but yeah, safe as could be!
