A New Jersey mom is accused of stabbing her infant before drowning the one-year-old and her other three-year-old child. Naomi Elkins allegedly drowned the children in two separate bathtubs before Lakewood Township police were called about a cardiac arrest emergency. Both children died. And this is part of why women are afraid to ask for help; if they’re honest about the terrible thoughts they’re having, they’ll be thought of as a “monster”. That’s what these people are trying to call her now, when she was a woman struggling with postpartum psychosis and likely had no access to the care she needed given the community she is a part of. This is too common in strict religious communities. We see it too often. This is what happens when religious communities don’t let women seek the postpartum healthcare and mental health services that they desperately need. It’s also what happens when we continue to demonize mothers who are seriously struggling with something that isn’t their fault, and when we don’t have adequate and accessible mental health services for the majority of the country. She isn’t a monster, she was a mother who needed help. It’s amazing how if a father killed his children, all the comments are about how evil he is. If a mother kills her children all the comments are about her mental health. Why does society make excuses for women but judge and convict men for the same thing? Sounds like women already have more rights than men.
