More than 80,000 acres of forest burned in the 2007 Moonlight Wildfire. Private timberland was logged and replanted right away, but it took some courtroom battles to get any work at all done on blackened public lands. This big timber sale almost didn't happen. Environmental groups stopped the work here once, but "we prevailed," said a Forest Service man. Helicopter logging began on the Cairn MP Fire Salvage in April. It put a lot of people to work in Northern California and Southern Oregon. The crews are working in the same area as the first-ever helicopter logging job in the US, and with the same companies, Colombia Helicopters and Erickson-Air Crane. Read more about it on the web at plumasnews.com/home/8213-salvage-logging-finally-begins-on-moonlight-fire.html. Enjoy the little looky-loo tour!

This is an awesome machine. Just the idea of a rough and rugged helicopter in the mountains surrounded by trees and logging, like a flying logging semi truck is awesome!! Though I always wondered, with all the fuel expense and the helicopter expense, is there really profit to be made from the wood harvested?

There was, but by the time they were allowed on the Plumas National Forest to do a small amount of logging after the Moonlight Wildfire, it was quite dangerous to those on the ground. Many trees had lost integrity and broke in midair, as shown in one clip.

The trees were standing dead for almost four years, so they were really dry. The trucks just had to fit under a 14-foot underpass - that's all ; -)

What a monster machine! Its amazing to me a couple small-looking turbines can generate enough power to lift that thing plus all the additional weight!

¡de nada! Esto fue tres años después de un incendio forestal. Trabajo muy peligroso. Los árboles se rompen a veces. Llevaba un casco y dos hombres vigilaban mi cámara y yo. ¡Fue una experiencia emocionante!
