Here is an old copy cat, the Mamootty starer Charithram (1989) vs. Chase a Crooked Shadow (1958). I am still grateful to S.N.Swamy as he introduced a nice Hollywood film to Mallus. Enjoy the comparison :)

Thank you so much VIvek, I kept searching for the Malayalam movie made before Charithram. Now I know the name *Ithile Vannavar* I knew it was a Madhu film, but instead of Soman I thought it was Prathap Pothen, that's how it eluded from me. Thanks again for providing the excellent info. puthia paravai (1964) with sivaji ganesan is a terrific movie. High production values, great songs (engey nimmadhi, unnai ondru ketpen, aahaa mella nada mella nada, paartha gnabagam illayo, chittukuruvi mutham koduthu) and Sivaji"s acting on a very complex character. It was a super hit and produced by Sivaji"s own production company

Great find. But, I think Swami is quite open about his sources. For eg., he'd admitted that August 1 was based on The day of the Jackal.

@anoopmknair Yes, funny I was watching Charithram again, and in one scene Jagathy's character (who already mocked Swami and Dennis) comments to Mammootty's character that the situation reminds him of Hitchcock's Chase a Crooked Shadow :) Again, one of my friends in Kerala mentioned after watching the clip that a movie was made earlier with Madhu in dual roles which is more true to the original (like tattoo to birth mark). I am still trying to locate the film, which is a pain :)

The first was "Rahasyam" with Prem Nazir. It was a good thriller. Released around 74/75. I don't think there was any acknowledgement of the source then...
