copying a line segment - geometry constructions

This video teaches students how to copy a line segment. In particular, this video will show students how to use a compass and straightedge to copy a line segment.
This video is appropriate for a student taking a course in Geometry. In particular, students preparing for the NY Geometry Regents or Common Core Geometry Exam should find this video helpful.

What if the length of the line segment was longer than how much the compass could extend?

Use a head to tail method until you match the length of the segment. Otherwise, you have to get a bigger compass.

The original Greek compass would collapse, that is, change the distance between the points, whenever you picked up one of the points. You could not use a Greek compass to transfer a measurement in the way you were doing. How would you use strait-edge and Greek compass to copy a line segment? It is possible!
