Copying IFR Clearances

San Diego Flight Instructor Garry Wing, of Fly The Wing Flight Training, offers some tips and suggestions for succesfully copying IFR Clearances. There's a bonus "easter egg" in this video. There was an intentional error in copying part of the clearance from Philly to Rochester that was going to be discovered on the read-back, but for timing purposes, the read-back and correction portion of the video was edited out. Pretend you're ATC and see if YOU can catch it!
Don't think about anything while copying the clearance. If your mind begins to wander, you're sure to leave out some small detail, and then you'll have to do that "back and forth" thing with ATC until you have actually said what he/she said.
Much of what you will get in any IFR clearance can be anticipated; at the very least the order of the elements you will be given is pretty standard and straight-forward. Think: C-R-A-F-T; Clearance, Route, Altitude, Frequency & Transponder code. Adopt your own style of shorthand for the most commonly used words and phrases; C for 'cleared to'; A for 'airport', AD for 'after departure', MTN for 'maintain', etc.

This is the very best video on copying IFR clearances. Most all the others use very short clearances, which are easy.

That is why its called "Copying" Clearances, rather than "Reading back Clearances". I appreciate the short video length. It helps me not think about how lame flying a Cessna is since it has no 50 Cal, Rockets, or other fun things. Anyway, like the vids Garry.

Garry, I am wondering why you are not active here. You are an amazing instructor and I used your videos working toward my PPL, which I got in 2015 at age 60. Now working on instrument certification. Thanks for all you do. I am sure this has been mentioned, but I would be happy to see you release online VFR and IFR courses. All Best.

A good way to practice during PPL training or after you get your private but when you are solo and not IFR training is to go to a Class C airport. There, you still get a ground clearance and there are similarities (though not the same - no "expect alt 10 minutes") in the way you communicate and read back. In Southern California, SNA is a great place to learn this, as you go through the entire clearance/ground/tower dance there.

I wish I could find just a very simple plan between two points on Garmon 430 with no extra way points and no copy of existing flight plans but with VOR and ATC frequencies, starting from John Wayne airport to LAX. and to understand how to insert the information in to Garmon step by step. Regards

I'm hard of hearing, and I think handling the radio is my most challenging obstacle in becoming a pilot (eventual private and instrument-rating). LiveATC.net seems a little challenging - either pilots talk too fast or I can't quite understand what they say. I will continue working at it, and hopefully I can get better.

Hey; I flew the first 30 or so years without a headset, so my hearing's not the best anyway... Listening to ATC is more about picking out the relevant information for your airplane and reading back the clearance portion (but not necessarily instructions or information). LiveATC (perhaps with a headset) is the best way to practice...

Nah, from my perspective you’re still a child. PP since 1971 and after break of about 20 years I got back into flying about 10 years ago and am FINALLY working on my IFR rating.

Clearance frequently doesn't spell out intersections --- THAT is what causes distraction

Hey Garry in your example of writing down the clearance I am fairly sure the controller says expect FL 200 10 min after departure but in your example FL 220 is written instead, correct me if I am wrong. I really enjoy watching your videos,. thankyou.

Good catch. Yes, as I mentioned in the video description, the pilot's readback of this clearance I recorded on LiveATC was wrong (I typed the altitude wrong in the video, like the pilot probably wrote it), but in the end I edited out the readback and ATC's correction due to timing. Glad someone is paying attention!

+Garry Wing in the video description it says "offers some tips and suggestions for successfully copying --- and reading back --- IFR Clearances.". Reading back the clearance always seem to be a big problem for me.

+Tony Yeah, I had to edit that one; if they run much longer than 5-minutes, then people start to whine about that... I do have the copying & reading back of a clearance in my latest video _Instrument Departure_, if that helps...kzbin.info/www/bejne/noiwqaxrjL5sbpo
