What if Wybie's grandmother didn't know about Coraline? At the end, she does seem surprised by Coraline's presence in the garden. Maybe Coraline's parents didn't mention her to get a cheaper deal? The pink palace is run down and therefore clearly a cheap place to stay. It's not implausible that Mel and Charlie, struggling for money, were drawn to the low price, saw that kids weren't allowed and therefore neglected to mention their daughter. It would kind of fit with their other questionable snd reckless behaviour too.

It’s most probably that. The second reason would be the grandma needed money, so in desperation she allowed it. The third and more sinister option would be that since Wybie is of age and in risk of being lost, she replaced him with another kid. I think it is least likely though.

14:15 Or he's inexplicably trying to protect her by never saying her "true" name. Fairy lore says that the fae can use your name to their advantage, taking power over you, and vice versa. If we go with that angle, Wybie's odd and agressive/imposing behavior at his introduction makes sense. He doesn't want her to share in his fate (being kidnapped/taken by the fae), so he tries his best to scare her off. When she's undeterred, he still tries to protect her by not letting the fae get a bead on her real name. Interestingly, Mr. Bobinksky does the same, later in the film, always referring to the protagonist as "Caroline," despite her protests. I always thought that was just from his thick accent, but now that you've pointed out that it starts with Wybie... It's possible that more people are involved than I innitially thought, where Coraline's safety (or lack thereof) is involved. And Wybie may have shown his hand in such a way as to make us as viewers have to analyze his scenes on repeat, with a fine-tooth comb, to get a read on his character. Masterful work on the part of the writers, animators, producers, directors, etc., and as always, a masterful and thought-provoking analysis from you, Megan! The one thing I noticed about this scene in particular is that Coraline never completely leaves the fairy ring. Like, if you pay attention, she constantly has at least one foot in the ring at all times. She only leaves the ring after Wybie tells her where she's standing. I always found that interesting. Like even with the dousing rod, she walks in a complete circle.

That is so true! She almost seems stuck in there once she enters it, but we clearly see her walk out by the time Wybie introduces himself. It's such a bizarre scene!

Maybe he's secretly a fairy. In some stories of fairies/faes, their behavior isn't always about logic or accordant emotions and actions. He probably was protecting Coraline in his own way.

In regards to the cat body language, "I love you" isn't the only way to interpret the slow blink. They're making themselves vulnerable to whatever they're blinking to. It can express that they trust you or, in this scene, they do not see you as a threat. He also has his tail up while crouched to pounce. Tail up indicates he is confident/comfortable in this situation while crouching means he feels threatened. The combination of these means he's not really going to pounce. So, I think, that interaction is the black cat testing Coraline, spooking her and gauging her reactions.

This is probably nothing, but when you brought atention to Wybie purposely misspelling Coraline's name, especially with them standing next to a fairy ring; it reminded me of how, according to folklore, if you give your name to the fae, they will have power over you, and since he seems to be a little cautious of stepping onto the fairy ring, maybe he's also cautious about saying her name near the fae?

You know, another thing about the fairy ring. Idk if you ever watched it or read the book but in The Spiderwick Chronicles. They put a fairy ring around their house which keeps all the monsters and fairies from entering. It has a magic forcefield around it

Wybie, comes off not knowing how to interact or was told how to interact outside or towards strangers by his grandmother. Maybe from a young age the grandmother knew that she's being watched due to her sister saying her woes and how the "Other Mother" fulfilled those wishes. I've heard that families under protection have to act or say a certain way so they won't give off information.

Interestingly we had Wybie come up as an autistic coded character during our Autism talk. I thought Wybie was almost 'summoned' as an ally for Coraline and as a show of never judging a book by it's cover. Wybie doesn't come across through visual or behaviour wise that he is a friend, yet he's on Coraline's side and cares about her welfare. Yet with the Beldam, she is the visual copy of Coraline's 'ideal' wish for her mother but is deadly and once the facade is no use anymore, the Beldam drops her disguise as sweet and kind isn't working anymore.

My little boy watches Coraline at least 2x a week, but sometimes more like 2x a day. He is autistic. And being his mom has me well-steeped in random info and constant thoughts about autism related things lol! I believed there's a great chance Wybie was at least modeled after an autistic child, like, ever since my kids first burst of daily obsession with this film. The way he looks around anxiously & carries himself, plays with his hands and stuff, right away it was practically jumping out of the screen at me lol. So if he is, his hair and hygiene might be that way because of sensory problems. My kid has to be submerged in lukewarm bath water for me to try to cut his, on bad days he will scream and shake if i try to put his hair between scissors. Clippers have never ever been an option because of the buzzing. And on good days it tends to tickle so much, I don't ever finish it in one bath time lol cuz hes starting to roll around in the water as it goes on & idw snip parts of his ears off. Sometimes sensory difficulties make it painful to be washed, even with a baby washcloth. It seems to fluctuate depending on factors like sleep cycle and stress. Hygiene can be a really complicated struggle, I'm 34, and he is 6- and sometimes it kicks my butt to meet his hygiene needs when times get tough. If I'm right, then I gotta hand it to Grandma, she gets extra props for keeping him out of the system. My parents straight up told me if anything happens to me, they can't help. They physically cannot be caregivers. And I also wondered if maybe Grandma's sister had autism too (obviously before the diagnosis existed). This might just be something my brain made up because I view things through the lens of the life we live, but please do hear me out. Autistic (ASD) children are extremely common targets for evil people. If she was taught to obey the adults, she most likely was obeying ANY adult that told her anything. Even adults with button eyeballs. Not like she'd be trying too hard to make eye contact lol. There was a 50% chance of each sister being chosen as far as we know, but something must have made Sister more ideal. Beldam would have caught an autistic kid much more easily than a non-autistic kid, for sure- just the same as non-magical villains of society we live in right now. It is a communication disorder, ranging from a harder time getting the right words out when confused / stressed, to having speech impediments or speech patterns that sound different and can be hard to understand, to being totally non-speaking, maybe not prone to use language as a child at all. ASD often comes with a urgent need to create as much consistency as possible. It puts people in predictable situations, making autistic ppl of all ages & all diagnostic levels way more likely to be deliberately maltreated by predators and people with power / control issues. They like routines & familiar things, and in this story The predatory monster in Coraline is an entity that looks and behaves like a kid's mother, that has spies that tell ir exactly what brings the child comfort and joy. They'll see what hurts her too, and whether anyone in her life understands it or not. Everyone else might not notice, but "other mother" can make it be a world without those pains. And with the cruelty & bullying that happens among their peers. In a time and place when this wasn't yet understood, an autistic girl could be especially, WAY down & eager to have their eyeballs ripped out and replaced with buttons, if it's what can give her a world just like the one she already knows, with her whole button-eye family. Cuz in that world, there's magic, and suddenly her dresses don't feel like they're ripping her skin off, & shoes don't strangle her feet. She doesn't get whooped cuz shes struggling with attention in school, can stay home & be taught by Beldam. And she's always accepted & loved as she is there... if button-eyes Wybie behaves way differently than real wybie & more like the kind of kid she'd prefer to hang out with, anyone that was part of her Pink Palace life could be better to her in button world. And that would be a huge deal to her, bigger than it could be for most kids. As kids, ppl w/ ASD are: Way more likely to wander off from a group. Or to wander off randomly for no reason- like, get out of bed at night and go walking thru the woods in pajamas 🫤 Way more prone to get lost in places they've been to over and over. & So many ASD kids get fixated on water & absolutely love to play in it. Even if it's just pouring it from one cup to another, that's soothing. And we're here together talkin about the same water well that's also a beldam energency-exit connection to our world...These kids are so prone to seek water to play in + have wandering tendencies= that's why we hear it on the news time and time again over the years: disabled little kids disappear from home while the whole family is asleep, and everyone jumps into action to search. Usually they are found too late, in a pond or creek. And Wybie doesn't have water seeking behaviors, but maybe cuz he's been raised by this grandmother that lovingly put the fear of God in him over it. Especially if she sees a lot of her sis in him in certain ways, as this does typically run in families. And that's my whole dang essay, of factors that led me to believe Great Aunt Sis was chosen, & it's quite possible that it was cuz she was somewhere on the spectrum.

I think you talked about this but the beldam won at the end. The hand can construct itself back together as it did in the tunnel in the scene where she throws the hand in the well with the key could mean it got sent back to the mom. (New scene) when coraline escapes the mom stops banging as a sign of victory(you talked about there being a third layer to the world so now coraline is forever trapped in the third layer) then going back to the other scene the key gets dropped to the second layer. So overall I’m thinking the well is another tunnel to the other world kinda going with the other comment

15:22 my little head canon when it comes to this situation is that maybe his grandma is really superstitious about a lot more than just the house. Like maybe after her sister went missing she became suspicious about anything magic related. Which would explain why Wybie wouldn’t want her to know that he’s gone playing near the fairy ring / well or being near that orchard that clearly isn’t right. Maybe that’s also why he doesn’t elaborate when coraline asks him to. He doesn’t know he was only repeating what his grandma said because it was getting him attention but he doesn’t actually know why she doesn’t want him around there or the house

First of all, I have to admit I'm not sold on the "two-level world trap" theory, though I have to acknowledge it as a good death-of-the-author possibility. Who knows- maybe watching the rest of this series will convince me otherwise. Anyway, with this in mind, I've always taken Wybie's attack to scare Coraline as a simple prank, undertaken by a prepubescent boy on a cute girl he's never seen before. It's classic kid stuff.

okie. so, the well taking 5 seconds to reach the bottom is mostly because spending 40 seconds of us staring at coraline would be weird. (40 seconds is now long it took in the book. or was it 100? or 60? either way, it was a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG ass time) about wybie being weird, i think he def has the tism as you said. and hes acting weird because he IS weird! XD he has no friends so his first interaction is to scare cause to him thats fun! hes like a kid who spends too much time on discord and not enough touching grass. only in this case, its too much grass and zero social interaction. i think its possible that he spends a lot of time outside of home, but i dont think he dissapeared. if he dissapeared, wybie wouldnt have brought grandma so easily to the pink palace or say stuff like "what am i gonna tell her?" or get the doll from grandma's truck etc etc. and about the hair, he might do it to himself on purpose, who knows? maybe his grandma tried to tell him that he needs to take care of it but since he spends so little time inside they dont have time to talk about it or he just ignores her. but ye. prob something else im forgetting but ill leave it there. wybie is just weird. i dont think hes malicious. just autistic and rarely talks to other ppl.

I think wybe didn't want to be in a role of power, I think he wanted to warn her that she was in his way. I also have a head cannon that the doll is able to move within the pink Palace, as at the end of visit one of the other world we fade into the pink Palace limbo and the doll was now facing coraline, same as the other mothers stare at the end of the visit. That was long but also supports that the other mother can control some things in the pink Palace.

I have a theory about Coraline. when she escapes from other world with ghost children help and we see Beldam hand will be on the other side of the door after she closes the door. After coroline leaves the world and tries to throw the key to well the hand will come out and tries to take coraline as well. I confused why beldam didn’t take Coraline back to the other world after Coraline close the door Since she can uses her hand from distance? Any idea or opinion you can share about this?

I personally always interpreted the "You'll see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day" line as if you fall in during midday you'll be falling so long by the time you stop and look up it'll be night which pretty sure a drop like that would kill someone so it's probably over dramatised or the stars could refer to the bits of light coming through the cracks of the well cover like stars like you've been thrown in and covered so you can't get out, which with the snatched by fairies stuff it might feel like that I suppose? That you're stuck looking at stars you can't reach freedom you can't have ect

I always interpreted Wybie as autistic. Hair can be extremely difficult and triggering to be touched and groomed especially in early puberty and sometimes you can repeat stuff many many times and the other person is completely unable to react in a neurotypical way also the hand wringing could be stimming. He might be homeschooled as well.

I know you already have a ton of scenes if not the entire movie already however something I noticed is that throughout the whole movie all the adults('cept her parents) call her Caroline, but at the end of the movie when she seemingly is out, and finally free, suddenly they're all calling her Coraline, which is odd having every time she protested and corrected them on her name they continued to call her Caroline until that point in the movie That's where my evidence/proof lies on her never leaving the other world, that and the cat walking through the sign at the end before the credits

Honestly, I always loved Wybie. I always liked him with Coraline too. I did notice his behavior was a little odd, but I always assumed he was just like that naturally. Some kids are just like that sometimes. I did always like the other Wybie better though.

I said it once, and I'll say it again. Wybie and his grandmother probably made a deal with the beldam to sacrifice the new family. The introduction from the cat and wybie looks like they are sizing Coraline up, to see if she fits the bill so to speak. They are reading her emotions from the very beginning. Wybie knows his family's history. Curses usually skip a generation. The grandma knew that Wybie was next and made a trade.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this along the way, call it engagement anyways, but I don’t think Wybie was emphasizing that the cat wasn’t his to distance himself. If you notice the pride the cat has in himself and cats in general when he does talk later in the movie/book, it’s possible Wybie understands to some extent that the cat would be offended to be “owned” or a pet.

I just edited the analysis of the first time the cat talks, and it is so strange how his nose is always up in the air and he won't give anyone a straight answer. But, you're right, the cat is very protective of his own independence.

I wonder how come we can hear wybie's grandma calling him, but there are no houses at sight! I mean, his granny obviously knows where this kid is but there is no sign of a residence around the well area. It gives me the creeps and I can't stop thinking; what if the beldam has disguised herself as wybie's grandmother? Think about it, no family with kids was allowed to rent the pink palace but all of a sudden the grandma decides to let people with kids in there? Maybe the grandma and her twin sister died due to old age and that's why there was the sweet ghost girl spirit and the beldam took advantage of Mrs lovat's death to take more children for herself.

I dont like Wyborn, bt I had a bad experience w/ a cousin who throu a sizable log at the back of my head from on top of a hill when I was at the bottom. Hence, Whybe can stay a why. I dont need to kno the answer of why Whybe is in the story. Seems a fill in 4 Coraline's childhood trauma. A person form of trauma that is essentially part of who you are. However, you dont really want to kno or interact w/ them or it. Whybe may have a name bt he is simple the manifestation of questions Coraline can't answer. However, she is young & wants an answer. Curiosity 💀 the cat, knowing Why-be (or why it be) brings it back.

I watched these episodes out of order. I think I started this series in the middle. So watching at this for the first time I'm coming in with later developed theories. Which makes me wonder why Wybie (who is theorized to be a Beldam puppet) would appear so disheveled and try and frighten Coraline. She needs her for her own reasons so I imagine the first thing she would want to do is make her wary of strangers or even new people that look familiar. That's like splashing the surface of the water and then trying to go fishing.

I LOVE that book (and Queen of the D**ned). I will try some analytical tests on it, but I have, so far, not been very successful to get people to watch live-action or book related content. I absolutely love Wybie, but you raise some very interesting points and questions that I've never thought of before. I'm wondering if his grandmother might be working for the Beldam, and he's trying to hide from both of them using the cat as a guide to help avoid them, maybe until he can shift their attention onto a different child.

Okay hear me out. I don’t trust Wybie’s grandma… why does she own this evil house? Why is it every time Wybie starts giving too many details we hear her call his name off camera like he’s in trouble. You may talk about this in another video, but I also find it interesting that when Wybie tells Coraline about his grandma’s missing sister, the next time we see him (in the form of “other Wybie”)…he can’t talk at all!! 🤔 sure we may think it’s because in Coraline’s perfect world Wybie is less talkative, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence. The Belldam and the Grandma are either the same or working together!

I like the idea of Fae Wybie, but I just like fae in general. Tbh, I always read Wybie as a homeschooled autistic kid. Also, he could be anxious because he knows he's where he's not supposed to be, aka near the Pink Palace

I’m thinking wybie is homeschool (suggesting his akwardness from not being around people and him ofc being at the well at a weird time of day when he should be in school) i am thinking the grandmother has a fear of him going anywhere being beacause his grandmothers sister has died so this fear made him not go to school and she probably hides him in a house all day doing his schoolwork to prevent him being near the palace so to the grandmother she feared of him going out places so that’s why she was so scared of him being out. Maybe idk 💗

Maybe wybie, is actually some sort of fairy, and that’s why he’s actually working with the belldame. Maybe she made some sort of deal with him that if he could get her child, then she what do something for him. That’s why he doesn’t know how to act around Caroline. He feels guilty, he has to glue her in, but he doesn’t want to be mean to her either and that’s why at the end he’s so happy that she defeated the Belldame.

i just want to comment maybe his hair is a lil “unkempt” because he has free form locs (a legit style) i’m not sure if that’s what they were trying to do. But i just don’t want people to see them in real life and believe the parents are neglecting the child

I was thinking, referring to the speculation about Whybe’s hair. His primary, and only, caregiver, is mis Lovat. However, it is know that she is blind. So could the mess of his hair be a result of her not being able to see him and therefor clear up the hair?
