One thing video can not convey is the massive buzz you get from doing these runs. Standing at the top ready to go is like confronting a fire breathing dragon. Obviously you have to have a good skill set and fitness level to ski a couloir. On top of that you have to be confident of the fitness and skills you've developed and go for it. If you take it too cautious you will crash- just the same as if you go too hard. There's a right amount of aggression needed to not embarrass yourself. On the other side if your not challenging yourself your just going through the motions. The perfect run for you is the one where it challenges your skills. Challenging your skills means your still able to ski it (lots of turns) -as opposed to just trying to get to the bottom/cheating your way down. If your just "trying to get to the bottom" then your over your head and your not going to get better. Skiing is really about the turns -lots of turns. Besides taking lots of turns is more fun...
@Boblib19704 жыл бұрын
Ive only ever skied at a few places close to home (western Pa) and they aren't very challenging. All of the runs are short and the blues are so easy, sometimes just going all out to the bottom is the only thrill. I always try to spend most of the days on the black diamonds which are only moderately long and difficult and focus actually skiing (lots of turning). But even those slopes are able to be skied straight to the bottom with few turns. I really need to branch out. I picked a bad couple of winters to rediscover the sport. Lately I've really been craving an adventure out West.
@CC42_2 жыл бұрын
Aside from the crazy entrance and the name, I almost wouldn't even consider Corbets a couloir. Take away the top and it's the easiest couloir I've seen. When I think of couloirs I think of Big Couloir at Big sky. Long and really steep flanked by rock walls. Like the many couloirs of Europe. At Alta they have the Baldy chutes which seem more like couloirs to me than corbets too.

My opinion is that anyone making it down Corbet's without falling deserves a thumb's up. It is an incredibly intimidating run and a large fraction of those that ski up to it, ski away and never take the plunge. It would be interesting if the run started easy and funneled you into a spot where you had now no chance of escape without climbing back out. There would probably be a lot of people calling ski patrol to save their asses. At Telluride once years ago I skied up to a cliff (there are plenty of them at Telluride, most runs labelled expert only have a section of cliffs), judged the height of the freefall necessary and decided it was not for me. Had I been with a local that knew where the rocks were I might have been willing. I had to side-step my way back up the slope in shame (but at least with all my body parts still attached).
