Produced as my dissertation project, Corby - Little Scotland is a short expository documentary about the Scottish diaspora in Corby, a long-established community of Scottish people that left Scotland in the 1930s to come to Corby for the steelworks.
There are a few mistakes in places, there are things that I could have done differently, however, the time and other resources involved in the project's production were very limited.
Currently, I am in process of taking this idea further and turning it into a larger-scale project, so fingers crossed!
Thank you for watching!

This is great, thanks. Born in Corby 1963 on the Beanfield Estate. English parents (dad half Irish). I had a Corby accent, halfway between English and Scottish. I had no idea. when we moved to Market Harborough I got called "Scotty"! I loved Corby in the 60's, didn't know any different. We played in the streets, went to church. Excited when they built the boating lake!

Proud of my scottish roots, both sides of my family worked for the steelworks. Family still in Corby and Scotland. Don't go back as often as I would like. People are friendly, great banter and love and miss the traditions.

My parents came from Port Glasgow, near Greenock, in 1969, looking for work at the steelworks as did my Aunt and Uncle, and eventually even my Nana. They all stayed in Corby, except my Dad who became a part time fireman and security at Avon Cosmetics after the works closed down. (This was when the fire station was on Forest Gate Road opposite the Everard Arms-handy for firemen having a pub across the road!) Anyway my Dad ended up in Northampton at Avon, where he worked til he retired. Sadly all but my dad and uncle have since passed now, but they all considered Corby the place they proudly called home. As do I to this day. Great video. Thanks for making it!

My dad was born in Motherwell (1934) but moved down to Corby in the late 1930's. Just before leaving school he moved back up to Motherwell and on leaving school approached the Borough for an apprenticeship as a carpenter, but, put the name of the Catholic School on the application and was told no catholic apprentices where being accepted (he should have put the school in Corby) The water department took him on instead. With a wife and three children he moved to Coventry where me and my little sister where born. I still consider myself Scottish. Like many we spoke scottish in the house and a "Coventry tongue" outside. My mam wanted to see Corby (dad had no interest) so she rode there from Coventry on a Raleigh Runabout (49cc) she rode past the house, turned around, and rode straight back to Coventry. An 80 mile round-trip on a Moped !

Great video. I am born and bred Corby. Family from Aberdeen since records began. I moved to Edinburgh last month as Scottish culture and values started to die out in Corby. I feel it has been consumed by North Londonshire values and lost its community and friendliness. Lovely people with nothing to do.... But now less lovely people and nothing to do... So I jumped the border :) Corby how I remember it... Nice people. Warm and kind. Helpful. Random conversations with strangers. Range Rovers were very rare :) Old firm day buzzing.

Apparently there was huge ads on the walls of the London underground, advertising cheap houses in Corby. What were they thinking? Higher house prices aren't the only negative result of those ads. Corby has been irrevocably changed. It's sad, really. At least we have the memories of the good days of this town.

@@BobBobOnKZbin Totally agree it destroyed the soul of Corby. At least we know the real town that was Corby. I am saddened at how much damage it did to the community but cannot do anything to change that. Now county lines and London gangs are in Corby which we never had before they started to promote it. RIP Corby AKA Little Scotland
