“Every time I’m experiencing a piece of art that makes me uncomfortable, I kind of lean in, because I think wisdom is on the other side of that discomfort.” Cord Jefferson, writer and director of the Academy Award-nominated film, “American Fiction,” shares how his experiences in Hollywood contributed to his desire to expand any limited ideas of Black stories or Black characters, why he thinks it’s good that his movie makes some people feel uncomfortable, and how the film’s success is feeling very meta. #DailyShow #JordanKlepper #CordJefferson

It is really awesome to see someone living their dream and that dream being appearing on the daily show

Oooh, "I wanted it to be satirical, but never farcical." - what a line. How profound. "Whenever I see / feel art - I want to lean in - because wisdom is on the other side of that discomfort."

Loved the interview, but you guys have to sort out your audio levels for that outro. The content volume is way lower than the outro, so when the outro plays is blows my ears out every time.

Seriously? Lots of people in the US are IMPOSSIBLE to race-identify. In my own family (White, aledgedly) My older sister looked like a Native American; one cousin, when he moved away, was assumed to be Mexican; some could've been thought of Italian*; my son looks Semitic**. *O.K. Italians are White, but my family is U.K. German and Native. **I hope that's the correct term.

He is the colour of how future USA will look. Lovely golden complexions with fine features...multiracial people whose race will be difficult to see. It will happen even if zero brown people are ever allowed into the country again. There will be more and more interracial children born. "White" will be the only easily identifiable minority race.

What difference does his race make in the context of this conversation? Like sexuality, his race has nothing to do with his talent, his achievements or his insight. He's a man who is to be rightfully admired, regardless of the judgemental and indeed, critical constructs formed by our tendency to arbitrarily categorize everything and everyone we encounter.

@@pyrexmaniac Have you seen the movie? In this very particular case, the point-of-view of one's racial experience is the point. Btw, the movie is GREAT and Cord really is rocking Jeffrey Wright's character's style here.

As a European, the idea that American audiences would look at a man like Cord and try and label him as 'Black' is absolutely absurd to me. The American conversation around race has become completely insane and detached from reality. It seems to me that race as we understand it scarcely exists anymore and America is struggling to find new labels to fit its current demographics.

As a non-black person with a black friend, I’ve heard that ‘blackness’ can be determined thus: “If you can’t decide whether to vote for Trump or Biden then, you ain’t black!” This stunning scientific discovery was made by a great American president who, unfortunately, contracted oil cancer and lost his mental faculties. I would tell you his name but, unfortunately, I was deposed shortly before making this comment and I..uh, can’t seem to remember who..where was I? Oh, yes, it was the president of Canada, Xi Jinping! 🧐
