Cordless Drill vs Impact Driver vs Hammer Drill: What's The Difference?

Do you need a drill or an impact driver? What's a right angle drill? Should you buy a hammer drill? If you are new to woodworking or even just new to working with tools I'll explain how they function differently so you can decide what works best for you. brand new drill user here........ can the impact drill be used to drive holes through concrete block? I was at Home Depot and talking with the Milwaukee Rep that just so happened to be there and she said "yes" with the concrete hammer bits. On the other hand, my husband says "no" and I can't find videos to support her "yes." I work at a school so drilling into block is something I do regularly, but the hammer drills are sooo heavy. Thank you!!

I would have said no several years ago. Impact drivers used to be used only for driving. Now they make hex drill bits specifically for impact drivers though, including masonry bits. So I think yes you could, but a 12v hammer drill might be the ticket. Lighter weight but still has the hammer function. I don't know what the block is like where you work but generally concrete block is porous enough that even a regular drill can work pretty well. I would say go with whatever is most comfortable for you.

That's actually sweet. I feel your pain I was working at a place called cone cranes and everyone just expected me to know how to backup a trailer and hook up a trailer and all this other stuff that most guys know how to do here in Oklahoma. But since my father wasn't around I never had anyone to teach me that. And it was a humbling experience learning that on the job. I'm glad you were able to find this video and learn a little bit.

Love the video. Note that the slower speed on the drill will also increase the torque. This can be helpful in some situations. For instance I was drilling holes in studs/top plates to run wires in my new office. I was using some Irwin Speedbor bits and they needed the extra torque to get through the wood. The higher speed just didn't producte enough torque no matter how slow I drilled.

Awsome vid. I've got that same exact set. I use the impact driver almost everyday at work and its awsome! The 4.0ah battery lasts all day. GREAT power/torque. The LED light comes in clutch. I could go on and on about all its perks. But once you pick up an M12 fuel you'll get the Milwaukee bug and want to drain your wallet and buy more and more tools lol.

Bro thank you for actually explaining this rather than saying , I use drills for home easy stuff , and impact drivers for hard tasks that require force . Like I truly appreciate this . I'll be real I never knew a drill had had a clutch , I did figure u would however adjust the numbers to the impact in whatever task you're drilling but you showing and explaining this made me realize , all I need is a very solid hammer drill . No need for a driver

I recently bought a new Dewalt drill & driver combo. I thought it was interesting that on the drill, they specifically had in the instructions not to put the drill bit in by powering it on while holding the chuck as you did. They want you to manually turn the chuck with the drill powered off, until it ratchets a couple times. I had never seen this before.

My guess is it is a matter of safety. Far less risk of the chuck grabbing the bit and slicing your fingers if it isn't spinning while you have your hand wrapped around it. Also, you may have noticed when he was demonstrating, the bit ended up crooked in the chuck the first time. It's much easier to prevent that if you spin the collar manually. Basically just get the jaws close to the correct opening in the first place, then slide the bit in, then crank it tight the rest of the way.

Cool. I think the impact driver is also safer than a drill as it cannot bind up and twist on you, possibly causing injury. I also discovered that the diablo speed demon spade bits are so aggressive they easily jam, twisting the drill-but work perfectly with the impact driver.

I just found this video and thank you SO much! I have my own tools because hubs does not like to do anything. I always knew there were different drills, but didn’t know what the numbers meant, or really the difference between a regular drill and an impact. Would you consider doing a video on saws? Especially table saws? I have a chop saw that I have had no issues with. I have a small Dremel saw that is awesome (as long as I make sure I have the right blade), but the table saw confounds me. I don’t know how to secure it, the guide is just gone and I cannot find another one. I’ve thought about using a large wood clamp, but I don’t know if it would give me a true cut. I have to build a chicken coop. I have a compressor with a stapler and a nail gun, but I haven’t used it yet. And I don’t know when to use nails vs. brads. I really need some help. FYI: I’m 5’ 3” and about 135 lbs. I’m not afraid of my tools or my lead hole punch. But I know how to use my hole punch! I’ve tried to find a class I can take, but they won’t take me because I’m not young anymore. I know you will probably never see this, but I could really use some help. Great video!! When I am working out of my service van. Mounting slim duct conduit or outdoor disconnects on block or brick, I need my hammer drill. I have been without it and using a drill driver sucks. If I am mounting frequencies drives in kindorf. I need my hammer drill. If I have access to line voltage my sds is my go to. There have been times although few that are driving me to a cordless sds. Not everyone's jobs fit into your cookie cutter description of professional work.

I don’t know how many times I screamed collet when you called it a chuck on the impact. Lol I hand tighten my drill chuck when removing and adding bits. I know my metal chuck can handle it, but I’ve seen too many plastic chucks bite the dust to trigger tightening and loosening your chucks. I maybe be weird about it still but I know my chuck is going to last a long time beyond its warranty.

We all need to evolve our Modern Chuck usage technique. Many of us a carrying old habits from the past like using the trigger to tighten down a chuck which can result in setting your bit incorrectly and over tightening the chuck. Simply close it by hand and make sure the teeth as set on the correct sides of whichever bit your securing and then only tighten down to the first lock-in position that you feel the chuck hit. I stopped over tightening a while ago with these modern chucks after loosing a few to the tool gods and instruct the men and women I work with to do the same to cut down on tool breakdowns. Any extra effort beyond that first lock position does nothing by bind up the internal parts of the chuck.

I don't understand why you don't want to use the drill to drive the screws, it obviously gives you more control to not strip the wood like you showed in your demo, is it because wood like live oak are so hard you don't need to worry about stripping them at all?

I use the drill for drilling and delicate screw-driving and the impact driver for drilling with paddle bits and general screw driving.

The gear on the top of the hammer drill (1 and 2) are seperate functions. 2 is generally high rpm and low torque, and 1 is low rpm and higher torque. Generally use lower torque or setting 1 when drilling or mixing into something that requires a bit more torque, such as a larger lag bolt or drilling holes into harder wood. I use speed one the most when mixing things such as joint compound when a corded drill is not available, you'll find that speed two will often stall. Just a correction that may help some people out, as I previously did not know the difference either.

The one and 2 on the top are the gears, just like a transmission the lower the gear the higher the power but slower spin.

Wiha makes awesome bits for those tools! Driver drill can also drill in masonry for small holes. Just use the right bit. Squeezing that trigger is called feathering. Helps when you do not want to drive a screw too deeply. I have that same exact right angle drill! You can drill most anywhere! Place hand on the end opposite the bit and you can apply pressure to drive things! But it is an M12 battery type drill. Might get an hour of use per charge but charges pretty quickly! Hour meaning heavy use. When it comes to long work days with a tool, I prefer corded because no batteries to run down. Consistent power too. Battery types for convenience or where there is no house power.

Drill safety tip - when drilling holes don’t use the “drill” setting, but use a torque setting instead. That way if the drill catches and kicks back the clutch will slip instead of twisting your wrist. Especially if drilling sheet metal or thin metal.

DUDE!!! I love your video and have subscribed to your channel but while watching this video, I guess because I'm woman, I noticed that you have by far LONGER and nicer nails than I do! I'm envious of your long nails but there's no way I could ever maintain those! On a more important note, I work at a hardware store selling tools, (which are my addiction as well, proving very hard on my paycheck) and I too am often asked the difference between a drill, impact and hammer. I hope you don't mind but I plan to steal some of your verbiage! Your explanation is great and easy to convey the difference, which sometimes I struggle to explain to my customers who are completely clueless to the specifics of a simple drill. Again, I absolutely love your videos, I have used several of your projects from your videos, such as creating stones from concrete for example but most of all, you make me laugh out loud, which isn't an easy task!
