***** Will do. I've been playing the nylon string for a few years now, and added flamenco techiques too. Altogether, I've played about for 35 years, mostly with a pick / combination of pick and fingers, so it was a tremendous effort to start playing only with fingers / nails. But I think I'm over the hard, beginning parts. Finally can consider moving on to making music too, with incorporating flamenco techniques. Thank you again. :-)

Ben Woods here, please let me chime in everybody. To all the people that complain that this is not 'basic' or that I'm showing off... I'm not showing off, I'm simply showing - I'm sharing my knowledge. As the title says; "Basic Flamenco Techniques". Not beginning techniques, not easy-beginner techniques. These are the basic building blocks of Flamenco guitar playing... the common techniques involved in Flamenco guitar playing. Before you can play Flamenco, you need to have a mastery of these. Flamenco is a language and these techniques are like words you need to form ideas. Yes they are difficult, Flamenco itself is extremely hard. Practice slowly. And to those of you that say I'm going through it too fast? Rewind and play again as needed, its a video. Also now youtube has the option to slow down this video (hit the gear icon). I hope this helps with your frustration. -Ben Woods

You know flam really is one of the most difficult techniques but it will freaking enhance any other style you might use or learn simply by knowing and being able to do even just the most basic tune. Don't be a pussy, step yourself up. I was push to do this at 13 and I sucked but when I finally got one song sounding half way decent with no mistakes it rocketed my freestyle and chord playing and especially riff playing. Now after 40 years of forgotten lessons, I have returned to learning and the thing I remember most are the flam. Well that and bloody fingertips. Lol.

I've taught a lot of people. From my experience I'd say all you really need for mastery is one or two hours a week and between 7 and 15 years depending on your mind (eg age, have you learned another instrument etc). The times passing anyway. You might as well. You'll find after the first 2-3 years the practise gets a lot easier. It's much more fun when you can do a little.

@@AmbeamTM 15 years ?!? .... nobody is that patient, sorry ^^ ... I got my picado going like Ben after quite a few hours of practice over a weekend on a single string, after a couple of weekends across strings and after a couple of months I solidified the muscle memory, so that I didn't need to warm up my fingers for minutes to get the speed... I think that everything is about the appropriate choice of practice... My thumb work is quite poor, because I never made the effort to find the best practice routines for me... But I'm sure, it be doable in less than 7 to 15 years^^, if I truly put my mind to it.
@AmbeamTM6 жыл бұрын
@@parityviolation968 yeah! To be clear youll be pretty good after only a couple of years, less if you put the time into practise. But we're talking about mastery rather than competency. People often take this tack for some reason. The idea you need to be patient to wait 10 years is flawed. Just dont stop playing. The time will take care of itself. And after it has I put money on your thumb work being excellent. Im all for distracted practise. Its what adverts are for.

This is a great video that gives a basic demo of all the flamenco and dare I say acoustic techniques you'll ever need. He goes pretty fast but don't be scared of learning them. Once you know the names of the techniques you can google them and find slower versions to help you learn. The important part is to practice as SLOW AS POSSIBLE EVERY SINGLE DAY. And just when you think you have improved and it's easy instead of increasing the bmps like most ppl will tell you to do, do the opposite, slow it down. Slow it all down. Keep aiming for slower, more controlled, more efficient. Speed will come naturally later. Essentially we are manipulating muscle memory to create a sort of "reflex", once you get it it's not something you consciously think about as you play but something you just feel and go forward with, this is what he talks about near the end of the video when he says "put it all together". Took me 2 years of slow disciplined, 20mins a day practicing to achieve all this. Good luck folks, don't give up! Great vid Cordoba Guitars!

I am an experienced guitarist. I started as a kid with simple acoustic stuff and then moved on in my teens to the typical rock and metal. I went on to classical guitar because I loved the style and music. I mention all of this to demonstrate I have a good background in the instrument. So when I say this is without a doubt the best video I have ever seen in regards to the basics of the flamenco style I want it to be taken in the context of my past experience. Don't get me wrong I am not a professional musician, but honestly this is one of the best videos I have seen on flamenco technique and I don't understand why so many people find it confusing. Maybe they are new or they are unwilling to practice as this instruction is simple to follow. I have really gotten into flamenco during the lockdown and this video has helped me to understand the technique in a way that few other videos have managed. Thank you to the man in the video.

Bands simply cannot be relied upon, so I came here to YT to find new ways of expression. Flamenco seems very advanced with the right hand stuff but I feel like I am learning a brand new instrument with percussive techniques, and flamenco.. glad to see I am not the only one! wow ! I have a flamenco guitar, cant play it but it is a work of art...made in Spain, out of Sycamore of all things. Apparently it was traditional for the Gypsies (i hope that is not a racisit term, if so apologies) to use any wood they could find for the guitars and sycamore is a common species. It is blond blonde, quality every bit as good as my Martins. Love it. I did have a video years ago and learned a few licks, I remember palming it in a percussive fashion. Cant wait to learn some techniques. So sad that Ben is gone, I was lucky to have survived cancer, so sad, RIP Ben, you are missed. take care everyone.

Great video. The only thing that people should remember is that the picado you show is actually Classical and not flamenco. You have straight fingers with rest strokes, which works very well, but at higher speeds is not as efficient as traditional picado technique. The fingers should be at a 45 degree angle bent at the knuckle. Watching this head on means all you see is the knuckles moving up and down and the rest of the fingers disappear because of the angular bend. This way you can reach much faster speeds and you don't have to change your hand position from tremolo, arpeggios or rasgueado so you can have smoother transitions. If you watch some of the greats like paco de lucia, rafael cortes, paco pena and jason mcguire they all adopt this angular 45 degree bend at the knuckles. THis allows them to seamlessly transition between strumming rasgueado and picado. The theoretical explanation is that you change your finger to a shorter lever by having at this angle. Therefore you end up plucking from the knuckle joint rather than from where the finger starts. The shorter distance thus equates to a faster potential speed one can reach assuming it is clean with good technique and nail shape. Cheers for the great video :)
@transformer8898 жыл бұрын
+Ilya Seleznyov Thanks, I am comfortable with 45 degree, but I always thought I was doing it wrong.

Despite all the stunned comments I found this video a great help. Would be flamenco players need to start early and play slowly. Concentrate on one or two of the styles at a time, practice as much as you can, a minimum of 2 hours a day and preferably much more. and you will get there. I started at 15 years of age and now at 74 i am halfway there. I think I will be ready for a stage performance in about another 30 years. However, I do get great pleasure from at least being half decent at flamenco. Cheers.

That's why I laugh at people who have their favorite guitarist(s) and prematurely label them as the "best ever", or that "he can play every style". Flamenco technique alone would and DOES give most of our favorite guitar heroes a headache. Even the likes of Al di Meola or John Mclaughlin never bothered to learn it, and instead let Paco de Lucia do his thing. On the other hand, many Flamenco guitarists can't improvise the same way Jazz guitarists are able to, nor can they sweep pick and tap the same way Metal guitarists can. Basically, there are too many styles and genres, hence why I always laugh at people who claim that someone is "the best guitarist ever". Yeah, no. For that to be a factual statement, that guitarist would have to master EVERY genre. Most already fail at Jazz or Flamenco. Insisting on calling someone the best is simply personal bias.

depends how it's said. 'best guitarist ever' i agree is too broad a statement whereas 'best guitarist to me' makes it sound less like stating a generalized fact and more like their subjective opinion. i still think it's always better to just say 'my favourite guitarist is "insert guitar player" and compliment their skill and talent in a number of other ways rather than go claiming who is best. there is no best like there is no perfect.

You're contradicting yourself. If no guitarists masters all genres, then a guitarist doesn't have to master all genres to be the best guitarist. (He or she only has to be a tiny bit better than others at the things the others are doing.)
