Windows 98 can only make use of 1 CPU/core/thread channel, however 1 core, 1 thread from that CPU will still easily surpass anything it would have run on originally. This would make a great multi-boot system. Win98 may only see the first CPU pipeline and PCI slots but Win XP will see all pipelines and the PCI-E slot. Thanks for the tip on 3Dfx tweeker. Also, “olden goldies,” Phil? Love it! 😄

@@Snow1998v1 I disagree, pentium 4 with an i865 chipset is cheaper than any core2quad build, the only thing stupid is use a SMP CPU on a OS that don't support SMP, and pay more for that(at least where i live pentium 4 builds can be done with equivalent to US$50. while it is possible to drop US$25 on a Core2Quad(just the cpu). Edit: i'm not against using s775 builds for windows 98, but using a Core2Quad ? i'm pretty sure that pentium d and socket 775 pentium 4 will save you a LOT of money for a windows 98 build.

I remember the horror stories i could tell of trying to slog through with Windows 98 exceptionally well. And at least in my experience, XP with service pack 3 has enough DOS compatibility to overcome for any such older games that I actively care about.

@@rdxdt Pentium 4 is actually kinda dumb for that build. P4's heat up too much, have a really low ipc and are in general uneficcient. Its way better to get a early core2duo at around 1.6-2.4ghz or even a coresolo wich has only a single core.
@Konkretertyp
@Konkretertyp 5 жыл бұрын
@@eduardoavila646 As phil has mentioned in the video, you could just get a single-core celeron for that purpose. For me personally,something like this would make a good dual boot system with win98 and winXP. I had done something similar with a socket 939 Athlon X2 4200+ and it worked fine, the only issue i had was the agp radeon x1950 that had no drivers for win98. I just wanted to see my Voodoo 2 in action again and for that it was just fine. I will try it again with my core2duo a ati rage 2 and voodoo2 combination i have laying around.

Who would've thought all those old computers I had, gutted and eventually tossed would have been worth something in the coming decades. Then again, they probably wouldn't have been worth as much if I hadn't tossed them. I'm glade I'm saving my first computer my dad and me built together. It was a 2.8Ghz Northwood P4, 512MB RAM and an ATI 9700 All in Wonder. It was all put into a silver aluminum Lian Li case. That damn blue power on LED was so bright! I got the motherboard, RAM and CPU from a company called Monarch Computer because they'd do a burn in test for you. I eventually upgraded to 1GB in the last few years when I rescued an old Gateway desktop out of a dumpster. Man, all that seems like forever ago.

Very exciting, this inspired me to reassemble my old Core i5-2500 PC. Worst case scenario i got the spare lan party PC i planned to build anyway. Best case scenaro the YMF744 will work in it as well as Windows 98 and ill be able to slow it down enough for DOS Gaming. In a best case scenario ill buy a second PCI GPU for Windows 98 gaming for that machine and see if i can make it the ultimate timemachine. Because one system that can do MS-DOS all the way up to Windows 10 gaming on low/medium would be the ultimate dream PC of mine. I assume the likelyness it will work and play nice to be quite low, but given i have the parts anyway and its a fun hobby it won't hurt to give it a go.

Socket A around here is still rather hard to find. I got one that is doing alright one that needs some caps replaced on the motherboard near the power connector. Both boot the latter just tends to hardlock eventually sooner the more you push it. I think outside emulation my Pentium 4 system will be enough and it has plenty of cheap parts so I can keep my rarer stuff boxed up. I do have to thank you every time that I am commenting to you and mentioning that Pentium 4 you and a few other people walked me through getting it to cooperate. It is a cheap dell that does not support win9x out the box, but can be coaxed into it. Thank you for protecting my treasures and allowing me to retro game still.

I love the back to back videos of XP on Haswell, and 98 on Core2Quad, Although I was quite aware of such possibilites, I think this is really opening up people's eyes to see successful projects like that. Regarding DOS sound compatibility, would you say that the Aureal Vortex would be a better choice than the later Soundblaster cards? I'm always on the fence on that kind of build, to go with an Audigy 2 for the best 98 multichannel EAX sound, or to go with the Vortex 2 or YMF744, with some basic DOS compatibility and even a wavetable header on some cards...

Yea every option has pros and cons. I think the first thing I want to look at is getting basic FM support. I think that should work pretty easily. Sound Blaster compatibility is much more difficult, the Vortex 2 is pretty high up there in terms of compatibility.

I went with a Athlon XP 2600+, abit VA-10, and a Radeon 9700 Pro for my system (everything has native win98 drivers). It still crashes a lot under win 98 se, but it's rock solid under Win 2K. Thankfully most of my games work on win2k. Built it to play through all the Mechwarrior games since Mechwarrior 5 is coming out hopefully this year.

Just a month ago I created WindowsME/WindowsXP/Lubuntu multiboot system with Athlon XP, 512MB RAM and Velocity 100(Lubuntu is used as a backup/restore system, where with simple dd command I can backup whole partition with Win98/WinXP and restore it if becomes unstable). Later I switched to nvidia, because Velocity had problem displaying 1920x1080 resolution (it produced large black borders on left and right, V3 same thing, V5 was ok but that was basicaly trash build from not very valuable parts and I don't want to loose it). I can imagine very similar build to yours can be made to work well with most Win98 and WinXP era games. It would probably need a proper PCIE GPU that would be used only for 2D under Win98 + Voodoo2 SLI for anything under Win98. RAM can be problem with 1G Win98 limit.

Oh man. You've given me an idea when I do a platform upgrade and when I can follow through, I'll absolutely try to get some benchmarks, etc from it. Basically, grab a PCIe 1x to 2xPCI adapter card, a Voodoo and a older GeForce or Radeon and plug it into a modern motherboard, use IOMMU virtualisation to passthrough the retro GPUs and make a Win98SE VM to game on at native performance using your normal desktop. Same kinda idea behind the Linux gamers who throw a second GPU in for passthrough to a Windows VM for gaming. Great video man! Now I'm going to start looking more into this so I can muck around with this idea when I get an IOMMU capable platform.

Its a good Project if you want build a w98 system and already / only have such hardware. Otherwise i would recoment a p4 system, they are damn cheap on ebay and will do fine for that purpose.

Since I knew Windows 98 could only support a single core in use I specced myself a Pentium 4. With that I limited myself to one with an AGP slot so I could use a Geforce 4 for the best Windows compatibility. Unfortunately Voodoo graphics cards are rather rare and expensive these days so I could not go down that route.

I think that you need that your OS recognize all that memory so an utility can use that excessive amount of RAM as a ramdrive.

PhilsComputerLab ok, then how about a vid on one of those mini ITX motherboards that has just one PCI slot. A lot of those have a weak CPU that may be soldered on and may only take up to 1GB or 2GB of ram? I don’t think I’ve seen many vids on boards like that.

Hey p4 3.8ghz on socket 775 might be faster on single core then. This could be a nice video to benchmark different 775 CPU under w98se. I have a dell dimension with a p4 Northwood 3.2ghz, it has never work under w98, only under wME, but that was may be due to the Sata controller and sp3 patch that I didn't know. Thanks for sharing all these useful information.

Nice setup, I actually think that a fast core2duo will be more that enough for Windows 98. Windows 98 can only see and use 1 core, Windows NT systems can use 2 or more cores at the same time. The backside is that for example Windows 2000 cannot play dos games. No offense, this is just my opinion and thoughts.

this is very encouraging because I have several Socket 775 motherboards and I even have an AMD machine with integrated GeForce 6200 GPU on the motherboard, I would love to get something working with that AMD system but every time I've tried vanilla Win98 SE I run into problems on everything I own except an old Celeron 500Mhz machine that I only have 32MB of ram for...

Some other options: - With Intel you can go up to the i945 chipset, it has no official win98 suport but there are modded drivers, or i915 with official drivers, and as for PCI express graphic cards you can use geforce 6000 and 7000 series (with modded drivers), or Ati xx00 or x1x0 series. - With AMD there are some motherboards that use older chipsets with more modern sockets that still have w98 compatibility, there are even some AM2 AGP mobos. Personally I've tried W98 in an unusual socket 478 i945 motherboard with a geforce 7600 GT PCIe and it worked fine, although my regular retro machine is a more common P3.

How do you manage to run geforce 7 on win98? I tried running win98 on a older socket 939 AGP mobo with x2 4200+ and i had all the chipset drivers available for it (found them based on the chipset numbers i wrote down, before installing), but i was not able to find any working drivers for my ati X1950 pro. Now i am curious if my c2d would work with win98 and a geforce 6600 pcie.

@@Konkretertyp I used modded drivers both for the motherboard, so I can use PCIe cards, and for the graphic card, I think this ones www.mdgx.com/files/NV8269.EXE although I'm not sure; I heard that there are also unnofficial drivers for the X1900 but I can't say anything first hand.
