The part where it picks up Alex while flying and glances down in a direct reference (the literal scene) of Toothless picking up Astrid in the fight against the red death in the first film, also the area where the dragon is learning to fly looks very similar to the beginning of the film, so I believe it's a reference to how hiccup helped the speed stinger and Toothless, I'm glad someone else noticed!
