All the Ionian islands are scenically beautiful, including my ancestral home of Ithaca. Corfu is the largest. The Ionian Islands have a turbulent history having been controlled by many different nations, including France, Turkey, Venice and Britain. The largest influences in architecture, language, and customs come from the Venetian and British periods. The Venetian rule was the longest and the British the last before Greece regained control in 1864. A young Danish Prince became King George I of the Hellenes in 1863. As a reward to the Greeks for adopting a pro-British King, Britain ceded the Ionian Islands to Greece. HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born in Corfu in 1921, the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark (the son of King George I), and Princess Alice of Battenberg. During the revolution of 1922 the family went into exile in Paris.
