As adults all of these tails turned out beautifully and are the perfect length. The breed standard states they should have a tail docked as short as possible but not indented, no longer than 2 inches and not long enough to stick out and mess up their topline. All of these pups as adults have a nub that is perfect for wagging but doesn't stick out or up and interfere with the flow of their toplines.

If the tails are docked (cut off), the puppies cry. It's painful!! But if the tails are banded (which is the technique many use and the one that I personally prefer) they don't seem to be bothered by it at all and don't show any signs of pain or discomfort. The tails just shrivel up and fall off after a couple of days much like the umbilical cords.

Unfortunately, the AKC breed standard calls for docked tails. Hopefully someday that will change but for now, we have to do what the standard calls for if they are to be shown. Since we can't tell who will be show worthy in the first few days, it's all or nothing. :'(

That is because they are a herding breed. It is so cows don't step on their tails or bite them, possible injuring their back or hurting them otherwise.

Some Pembroke Corgis are born with a natural bob tail, but not all of them. The ones who do not have a natural bob or a bob that is too long according to the AKC breed standard are docked. Hopefully AKC will come around in adjusting the standard like other international registries and the UKC have done and allow the full tail but it's up to the parent club to set the standard, and it's not looking like that will change anytime soon.
