Lucy Gray Baird is incredibly beautiful. I understand why Corolanus Snow fell in love with her. Who wouldn't fall in love with such a woman?

I don’t think people really get it. He wasn’t in love with her. He used her, then he had a chance to actually fall in love with her, but he chose to win instead. Whether she lived or died was not material, so long as he won. Good thing for her that, at the time, her survival and his goal were joined together. He did not have to choose between them. But, in his heart, he had already made that choice. If she had been his competitor, he would’ve done everything possible to see her die. If you want proof, just look at how he treated Katniss Everdeen as the Mockingjay decades later. Katniss and Lucy shared a similar spirit, which is why Snow was anxious to have both of them on his side. In Katniss’ case, Snow had the power to easily call the shots. As soon as Katniss decided that she did not want Snow as an ally, he tried to destroy her. But he did not have nearly such dictatorial power in Lucy’s time. He knew he needed her to win. He may have had some affection for Lucy, but that wasn’t love. It was a certain respect at most. He always put his own interests first, and any secondary, selfless interests he had were for the wrong reasons, because he benefited from them in some way. Snow, in my opinion, was a type of sociopath, and sociopaths are terrific mimics. They are capable of convincing others that they truly care. I say sociopath, because they still have a certain degree of ability to change. They simply choose not to. “It’s the things we love MOST, that destroy us!” Snow was ultimately destroyed, not because he loved Lucy too much (she was not what he loved most), but because he didn’t love Lucy enough. Snow loved one thing more than Lucy, and that one thing is what destroyed him.

I completely agree!! I think that what Snow loved so much that eventually destroyed him was obsession with winning, and more than that- him actually losing in this game of trust with Lucy. One of the things I really appreciated in this film is that we saw moments where snow had the ability to choose to be good, and everyone reminded him constantly that he can be good (Lucy, Tigris, Sejanus) but he chose not to, over and over again (for example, he continued to hit that boy in the arena even when he was already dead and harmless). In his mind at the beginning, he wants to think of himself as a moral person who just does the things he does to survive, but at the end he comes to the true conclusion which is- he had choices all along that would all reach the same goal of survival. He on the other hand, chose the ways of survival mixed with betrayal which sooner or later made him the winner. His “love” for Lucy was just his excuse for him to lose it completely, and the become the snow that we know and hate.
