I live in Southern Australia and have a few cork elms. Very happy to see a vid focusing on them as I don't see many and wow, Mikes trees are awesome!. These trees grow and develop very well here, grow very easily from cuttings and put out lots of roots. Thank you and I'm looking forward to the follow up vid. Mike mentioned posting online some of his trees, does he have a facebook page?

How do you maintain vigor in the lowest branches ? Continuously cut back the upper areas ?
@BaikoenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. Usually top is trimmed more often compared to lower branches. If you follow Michael Roberts. That first branch he let it run for years to gain its thickness and trimming for ramification but keep vigor to the lower branches

First, it's always a pleasure to see Michael's trees. Second, nice video, very informative and clear to most beginner's. Being from another country we only get chinese elms here but they respond well to the same techniques, we just don't get that beautifull bark. Did Michael said how many years he kept the elms in growth boxes to achieve those girths in the trunk? Best regards.
@BaikoenBonsai3 жыл бұрын
Michael elm techniques could be easy used on many different type of deciduous trees. If I remember several of those trees has been in growing boxes 15-20+ years with times going back and forth in between time.

How do these cold weather trees do in SoCal weather?
@BaikoenBonsai10 ай бұрын
We are in a Mediterranean climate. So only trees that need true winter dormancy like white pine don’t do well.

Very educational video. Thank you. His set of tools looks amazing. I want one. I have a cheap $60-70 set from Amazon, and I wish I bought a better set. Mr. Peter Chan could trim that tree in 10 seconds. I'm just kidding, but his videos seem that way. I can spend a whole day on that tree.
@BaikoenBonsai3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yes Peter Chan could easily trim it with his hedger. When you think you are ready to upgrade to better steel tools. One tool at a time.

You mentioned the “2-2-2” rule…two leaves and what else?
@BaikoenBonsai Жыл бұрын
Two to two. Two leaves (buds) to two branches. To keep ramifications going. I like going to 4-6 buds as I notice the tree gains more strength than only 2 on elms. Maples it’s really 2 to 2
