Corkscrew Gulch Jeep Trail - Alpine Loop - Ouray, Colorado

Corkscrew Gulch (some people call it Corkscrew Pass) is an excellent trail located in the San Juan Mountains outside of Ouray, Colorado. We started this trail at the trailhead off of Highway 550 and ended up running only this trail back to Silverton. This is a great trail that almost all stock 4x4s can do and it offers stunning views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains. You can also access the whole host of the Alpine Loop from Corkscrew Gulch including the other trails such as Hurricane Pass, California Pass, Poughkeepsie Gulch, Engineer Pass, Cinnamon Pass and Animas Forks Ghost Town. It was great to meet up with Camron for a day of wheeling and you will get to see his new Jeep Gladiator a little bit. We also had my buddy Jerry join in his stock Toyota FJ Cruiser. It was another excellent day in the mountains! I apologize for the shaky iPhone video as my GoPro ran out of batteries on the way up.

I drove Corkscrew up with my 2007 1/2 ton Silverado. The only part I didn't like was the lower part. It was extremely rough.

There’s so many ways to go up there. We ran Poughkeepsie before it and then everyone was done for the day so we headed on to Silverton for a late lunch.

Lol, did this in a unmodified 1993 Honda accord going the opposite direction... the ascent wasn't too bad so I figured the descent would be similar.... nope. That was a long nerve-racking drive down lol... This was back in like 2015 or so and was just thinking about it today... had no idea it was an off-road trail because no signs were posted (from my recollection) but it should've been obvious I guess. 😂

How long is this trail start to finish?

It’s hard to say, depends on how fast you move but it’s a pretty short trail. It gets you up to elevation quickly and is a steady climb all the way to the top. If you move quickly, you can probably get to the top in an hour or so. From there you can come back down to 550 or continue exploring the almost endless trail system and score more passes. - Geoff

Technical question. Assuming GoPro. 8 or 9, frame rate and sharpness. I've carried GoPros for a long time up there, my last time was with a 4. I want videos as sharp and clear as this is. Excellent!!

Thanks Brad!!! It’s a GoPro Hero 7 Black. The grainy footage is from my old GoPro Hero 3 and I can’t stand to use that old one anymore because the stabilization and the picture quality is so much better on the new one.

@@Colorado4x4 frame rate? One trip I shot at 30 fps. Ruined everything. Jello effect was to bad to watch. Assuming 60 fps. I've got an 8 and the stabilization is unbelievable.

First time using this camera and I had it on 4K which is 60 FPS I think. Next time I’m going to set it at 1080P with the highest frame rate and see how it looks 🤷🏻‍♂️
