They may be able to show crazier things in places like asshai and yi ti more easily, not having to use vfx and set pieces, spending more time on story and characters. Which allows HBO to keep making Asoiaf spinoffs for the fans!

The Valareons are a great proof that viewers dont mind if black actors are inserted into an otherwise white cast if it’s thoughtfully done. It works here because we don’t know much about demographics in ancient Valeria, the only things we know are that they have white hair and are dragon riders. There could easily be several “races” of Valerians from Andal, Rhoynar, First men, Ashai, Sothoryos, or summer isles lineage who share a dominant gene for white hair. It also works as a storytelling device because it helps the viewer differentiate between targaryens and valeryons in a very character dense universe. As well as furthering the doubt of rheneras first 3 children’s parentage. They’re great characters and it makes narrative sense for them to be black unlike a lot of other shows where black characters are clumsily shoehorned in and it’s seen as blatant pandering.

His first comment was ‘why is there an African in this?!’ I called him out on it, we went back and forth a bit and it was ridiculous. His logic was that GOT was based on medieval Europe, and listed a few events in the series that were inspired by real world events. Because of this, seeing an ‘African’ in the show, pulled him out of it cos it was unbelievable….. I don’t usually throw it around as it’s a bit overused, and people jump to say racist a lot online, but I could only conclude that he was in fact, as racist (and basically didn’t want to see black guys in his tv shows)’ Cannot fathom how someone could have this opinion on great characters in a well written show; a show that is set in a fantasy world - that isn’t Earth - with fucking dragons in, becomes unwatchable and as having some black characters in it ‘pulled him out of the realism’. There was a sea snake-like monster supposedly that the founder of the greyjoys defeated and he used their bones to decorate/build the castle on pyke during the age of heroes. The bones still exist so they clearly belonged to some ferocious monster. Whether it was a sea monster, we'll never know unless they do an age of heroes spinoff or something.

If euron truly sailed to valyria, where he got his full valyrian armor, then he may be even better than corlys. But I doubt even he could make it through valyria when even dragons couldn't. I'm a book euron fan but I do feel like he exaggerates his tales, though he does very well for himself gathering important items like he's doing every side quest possible before the main quest. But corlys did the same, except not for evil ends, but to enrich his family and give them a great legacy. And corlys did it first.

I see a lot of people have mentioned the color of the Velaryons. To be honest, it bothers me personally because it wasn't well thought out and feels very forced. There is a legitimate question: was Aegon the Conqueror black? His mother was Lady Valaena Velaryon. If it was always the plan for the Velaryons to be black, then why are Daenerys and Viserys white in Game of Thrones? We know that every Targaryen after the Dance of the Dragons was a descendant of Daeron Velaryon, since Aegon III married his daughter Daenaera. Following that, there were numerous intermarriages between close relatives in both families. If diversity was the goal, it could have been handled like in the original series or new characters could have been introduced to add something new to the story. In any case, Steve Toussaint is a great actor and I liked his portrayal of Corlys in the first season, but he isn't the Sea Snake as described in the book.🤷‍♂️

Makes velaryons easier to identify from targaryens, when targs tend to look very similar, it can be hard to distinguish them without distinguishing features given to main characters but side characters are so hard to tell apart. It's an easy way to tell apart velaryons from targaryens and giving good representation as well, since velaryons especially corlys is badass. Also targaryen genetics may work differently because of their magical blood. Who knows how their genetics work, it's a fantasy series. Targaryen genes could tend to override velaryon genes, which would've made sense except for rhaenyra's kids but they had to show them as obvious bastards. I'm not gonna worry about it too much, it's fantasy, I'm happy for representation, the characters are cool, corlys is fantastic and the actor plays the role perfectly. It also fits with them being seafaring people, in the sun constantly, maybe their skin evolved more melanin over time. Maybe they are some point mixed with people from the summer isles. The only black representation in GoT were eunuch slaves (badass ones, yes, but still) and a lying thief who backstabs Dany and the 13 council in qarth. Glad to have positive badass black folk in the series. Sorry for the essay.

Honestly, it's great for the TV show that the Velaryons are black, so you immediately know who is a targaryen and who isn't. Otherwise it would a bunch of identical-looking dudes with a blond wig. In the books, they litterally are all described with the same words (tall, blonde hair that almost look white, purple eyes).
