I was hesitant to even watch this, but I'm glad I did. The SFI fancies itself a "Monastery in the Mountains", and it seems that even when you fill such a proudly seclusive place with the smartest people (many of whom I admire very much), it can't help but become a breeding ground for the worst of human nature. I sincerely hope that they take this opportunity to start a transparent investigation, because transparency is the only remedy against personal and institutional bias --- and the scientists should know. At this point it shouldn't surprise me that some people I hold in high esteem are so godawful at choosing their friends, that they are so susceptible to bullshit, and so ready to ignore blood-red flags when it is advantageous for them. That Cormac would indulge Krauss to that degree was always weird to me, but I'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that their conversations never ventured far beyond theoretical physics (even though Krauss's work on that isn't that impressive either). I mean, Cormac showed his disinterest in any other topic pretty clearly in that last interview. One can hope.

We have to take into account that institutions like the SFI are not relying on government funding, and whatever money that you could take, from whoever, you would take it because you're convinced that the team and their involvement with teaching and perpetuating independent thought is necessary for the future of the subject they love. SFI accepting 25,000 is nothing in comparison to Krauss taking 250,000! And there is of course the idea that the institute might have been trying to use Epstein for his money, and severing ties when he pitched in, except for the few people there who continued to be involved with him.
@WriteConscious10 ай бұрын
That's why I didn't question the initial $250,000. But, the post-arrest $25,000 seems like a "are we still aligned and friends" donation from Epstein that had to warrant discussion about its approval. Maybe they were just approving everything without thinking, but if some insane controversial person tried donating they'd probably reject lol
@chrisofferoff191310 ай бұрын
@@WriteConscious yeah thats very interesting. Especially if the 25,000 after his arrest were a way for Epstein to see if there are any people he needs to worry about, in terms of witnesses and evidence. He tries to bribe them and they accept not necessarily because all of them support him, but because they want to improve the institute. Nonetheless there are more dignified ways to fund your insitute. Especially for people who probably feel that they are contributing to a very important cause, for the whole world
