A white dude I work with was told by a colleague that I'm Jewish; I think he was relieved because he was afraid I was Arab, based on my looks. Dude randomly comes over to me with a big smile and says: "I want you to know I support Israel". His expression changed when I calmly say: "That's nice. I personally do NOT support the Israeli government's illegal occupation of Palestinian territories or its policies of Apartheid against Palestinian peoples, or its bombings killing children in West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon, or the corruption of the Israeli Prime Minister. I'm not down with that stuff." Dude was suddenly magically struck mute.
@zyrosqrd25523 жыл бұрын
@Splint Meow i'm agnostic, but of Jewish parentage. As a kid I got beat up for being a Jew; after 9/11 I got threatened in the street by people who assumed I'm Arab; in 1980 people accosted me thinking I was responsible for the American hostages held in Iran. Some people use their brains to think critically and keep learning; some use their brain to jump to baseless irrational conclusions and rationalize prejudice and violence against those they perceive as different than them.
@zyrosqrd25523 жыл бұрын
@Splint Meow feel ya, bruh, but "the stuff going on between Israel and Palestine" is not going to end in our lifetime. Politicians will always rile up their base by hate-mongering against a perceived enemy group, for their own profit and to maintain power. It's as old as time.
@zyrosqrd25523 жыл бұрын
@Splint Meow appreciate your sunshine and hope you're right. But I don't think everyone wants to live in peace; discord, divisiveness, war - all give power (and money) to those who rise to the top of governments. Regular people on the ground want peace in their lives for themselves and their families (not necessarily with regard for peace in the lives of others); but politicians and leaders of fringe groups (we covered that white supremacy issue, right?) are masters of rhetoric designed to convince people (those without skills or critical thinking) that they need to activate anger and violence to achieve this elusive "peace" for themselves. Not like I'm cynical or anything...

I’m not sure what you mean when you say « Harvard » has always had its semetic rules ». I do know that in the first half of the 20th century Jews were refused admission and / or were discriminated against. Of course, it used to be a bastion for WASPs but it seems to me that they have almost bent over backwards to promote diversity as of late. Controversially, they recently implemented a policy to limit the number of Asians in order to benefit other minorities such as Blacks and Latinos. They were sued by a group of Asians but they won the case in the Supreme Court on the argument that promoting diversity is a positive value and so race may be used as one criterion in the recruiting process.

Not giving windbags who say nothing tenure is a great way for Harvard to maintain their high standards. As to his mendacious claim about Harvard denying him tenure over his pro Arab stances, he held those positions when he was hired for a tenure track position. It isn't like he had a sudden change of heart during his time at Harvard. The simple fact is his scholarship, which was never as great as the public believes, has declined precipitously during his time at Harvard as his teaching. He can write books for the public anywhere but tenured positions are for academics who teach.

These crimes, both home and abroad that are a byproduct of money is free speech and our Corporate State. If you speak-up, then these neo-liberals along with conservatives who are the slaves to plutocracy will come after you.
