Fair warning for the faint of heart: The hawk chick is too young to know what it's doing; that chick does not die quickly (one of the parent birds has to finish it off).

Hi Shadowcat, I know this comes late but... It might look that way, it's actually trying to pluck the eyes out of the Starling chick, but there's the small problem of that pointy little beak... the favour could be returned just as easily. I hunted with hawks just over a decade ago, and seen it done many times, makes any escapee prey that bit easier to catch again... they ain't stupid. There's good(?) footage taken by a guy in Germany of a Sparrowhawk catching a Magpie, and if you know Magpies, or any Corvid for that matter, they're noisy buggers when giving their alarm call. The Sparrowhawk spies the garden pond, and swiftly drags the poor Magpie to the pond and proceeds to drown it.... in silence !!! That shows not only an understanding of its' environment, but cause & effect too. They're canny buggers, you gotta give 'em that... kindest regards, Paz.

Jamie Koering Tanya Ryland There’s no need to wish to disappear or sad for the baby bird. Laying eggs in other birds’ nest and eating that bird’s baby are same instinct of each bird and it’s not far different from going to the bathroom to do your business and feeling angry or sadness about them is no other than human evaluation though it is also (human)instinct not much useful for other animals in most cases.

@@Seneditiz it was a fledgling. The nest was most likely close and when the bird went to leave the nest for the first time it landed in the most unfortunate spot. Usually they will end up on the ground the first one or two days while the parents will continue to feed and care for it and coax em up to the trees to get them flying etc.

@@kathryncastanares525 It's also possible that one of the hawk parents just dropped it off without killing it. Hawks and Eagles aren't particularly intelligent, so this happens from time to time if their initial attack on a nest doesn't kill the thing they're carrying.

That dumb little bird walked right into a nest filled with big, hungry bird-of-prey chicks, making annoying noises nonstop and blundering all over the place right next to them for about 7 minutes. Meanwhile mom just screams with the kid, and when caught they both just scream louder instead of trying to do something. That Kestrel chick attacked him to shut him up more than anything. That thing earned it's Darwin Award. And mom helped deliver it.

How in the hell did a starling chick get up there? Did the parents drop it off and just not kill it for their practice? You can see dead chipmunks everywhere so I just don't see the parents dropping it off for food before they even ate the chipmunk. Anytime I've seen hawks or eagles they usually kill their prey before they even fly off. The few exceptions are when her offspring are about to leave the nest an she basically makes them kill for themselves. It doesn't look like these are about to leave the nest though. It's just kind of weird. If anyone has more info on this situation please fill me in.

I’m not aware of what different types of birds look like in each stage of maturing, however I would assume it’s a chick for the simple fact it flew into the predictors nest and looking at them like “feed me, my mom just kicked me out will you be my mother?” Awe poor thing.... can anyone tell me how to know this is for sure a chick? Is is the color,size,or type of feathers that is the give away & if it’s a chick how did it get right into a hawks nest?...
@rafabuda0
@rafabuda0 3 жыл бұрын
From the looks of things it was a fledgeling. That is, it just grew it's first flight feathers and was taking it's first few flights out of the nest. They usually look just like a plumed chick but bigger and with bristly feathers instead of soft plumage. What surprised me was a fledgeling who hadn't even learned how to hunt yet (you can see it asking the hawklet for food) to just stumble into another bird's nest. Those two nests must be extremely close to one another.

In all fairness the starlet was pretty punky. Snapped at middle hawklet who almost pulled his card. Walked around to closest hawklet who was obviously going to have none of it based on behavior. Baby predators tend to bully each other and just about everything the starlet did would have been taken as.... aggressive.
