Wow! Thank you for sharing that history. Amazing to see the tree become a fiddle. Background music was perfect too. A lot of heart went into that fiddle. 😊❤

I hope every note that comes out of that beauty carries some of the memories of that old ash tree.

Wow, I like everything about that. Unique instrument. Great work as always. Someday soon I need to try another box fiddle.

Thanks, Steve! After building this I’m kinda itching to try a gourd fiddle. Even beforehand I’d considered trying one. I got to play one of Jim Morris’ years ago.

this is fantastic I have delighted in spending most of the day, yesterday, in the back yard, working on a kerfing plane. My second attempt at resawing an oak board is definitely, going better than the first try. I had over a 1/2 inch of runout over 20 inches of run. I am not quite done with my second try, but it looks like I will have much less than an 1/8 of an inch over a similar length. I am getting better at both sharpening and using my hand planes, but I still need more practice at putting my 9-inch bench plane back to gather and getting it to work. I bought it at a garage sale and restored it. I also have several other small hand planes to retore or to use for parts. I thank you for all your help and encouragement. Soon I hope to start on my first dulcimer. After a few of those I hope to be growing into building banjos and violins.

I’ve kinda gotten spoiled with a jointer, but sometimes you can’t beat a hand tool over powered one. Sounds like you’ve got many projects. Thanks!

@@NoahCline I do not have room for power tool plus I love the feeling of working with with my hands and I have made many of my own tools since I was a young one. I have a life time of projects but life has been such that I am only now starting to build.

Ha, when I saw you play it, I thought to myself "damn, it's a shame there isn't any footage of him building it" Boy was I wrong! Just needed to wait, ol Noah's on top of things. That sure was a big tree, I'm glad you included the size comparison! You ought to plant another one. “Blessed is he who plants trees under whose shade he will never sit.” Great video bud

Thanks! Yeah, I’ve gotten in the habit of taking photos along while building whatever it is that I’m working on. I think I had roughly 150 photos of this build, and that missed a couple steps I didn’t show or take photos of, but eventually did after the fact. I did in fact just plant a redbud. I’ve tried several, even transplanting a few from the farm without any success. They’re around where I live in behind on the adjoining property and across the road, but the woods on our property are mostly made up of oaks, including chestnut oaks, hickories, and a few pines, maples, cherries, and serviceberries. I’ve read that they’re harder to take when transplanting. Hopefully this one will make it. The ash trees are becoming a bit scarce because of the emerald ash borer, as I know years ago there was a lot of talk about them. I know this tree had quite the evidence of it with all the worm trails below the bark, and the core wood being quite holed, like moldy Swiss cheese. “Punk wood”, as they call it.

Jeez that's some impressive craftsmanship! Love how that one came out. :)

Thanks! Never building a fiddle before, and with the dimensions and construction, I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out, but I’m thankful for how it did.

The fiddle you hear in the recordings featured in this video are of me playing it, along with guitar and banjo, also played by me. And, I should add that I made an intro video of this fiddle a couple days ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ_akqhqhJV2orMsi=XM6yoGbTk0ZNP5jI

They’re made by Golden Gate, available from Elderly Instruments. I’ve used these for several years as I like the small metal buttons. They’re a bit better for the fact that they have the solid worm housing with nylon bushings instead of the partial “finger” type like they had years ago. Thanks!
