Interesting detail: The harbour car park was my grandfather's idea. I never knew him at his best - he was just an old man in a chair, in pain a lot of the time - but in his day he was astute and forward-thinking. He was a railwayman. Anyway, he was talking to some councillor or other who described that the inner harbour wasn't seeing much use (ergo, generating much revenue) because it kept silting up. Grandfather - this was before the war - suggested that as Penzance was a resort town, and given its proximity to the railway station and town centre and as more people were acquiring motor cars, that the inner harbour be filled in and turned into a car park. The councillor conceded that was a good idea - but, what to fill it in with? A potentially costly exercise. Grandfather, whose name was Graham, identified that Penlee Quarry across the bay used to take all their unwanted debris out in a barge and dump it at sea - and instead, suggested that the owners be contacted and the unwanted stone be brought to the inner harbour and deposited as ballast/ hardcore instead. The rest is history - albeit a footnote. Once upon a time, when the council had a good idea they would act upon it immediately instead of going the long way around through endless elaborations of bureaucracy and red tape. Now, the council only ever act quick to save or make money - notably, by increasing our council tax every year!

Did this walk and more over Christmas! Just as cold and verrrrrrry rainy :-(( Star Wars was on at the cinema and Chewbacca & Storm Trooper were in reception for a photo opportunity! Penzance one of my favourite towns in Cornwall. Also visited Mousehole lights...something I have wanted to do for as way back as I can remember, so I can now tick it off my bucket list of things to do. And the rain stayed off long enough to enjoy them properly! A very different Christmas to usual! J x

Sounds like you had a fantastic time - always good to mix up the Christmas traditions or it can start to feel like a chore! Love Mousehole at Christmas. We have found several little harbours that have lights at Christmas and we are intending to visit one or two in December - planning ahead! :)

Really enjoyed your walk round Penzance. Have eaten in the Old Lifeboat and had a drink in the Yacht, Turks Head and the Admiral Benbow. Love Morrab Gardens so for us it reminded us of our stays in Penzance. You could have mentioned that 5 Chapel Street was the murder scene of the first Wycliffe aptly named Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death which first aired in 1994. The zebra crossing in Market New Street was the scene of another murder in the 1997 episode called Seen a Ghost. Keep up the great work and looking forward to visiting again in April.

We really enjoyed the walk; with all the beautiful countryside and spectacular coastline in Cornwall it is easy to overlook the town centres. Loved the older buildings as they show how the town evolved over time. You looked absolutely frozen though! Fantastic video, really enjoyed it - John, of course, has noted details of the pasty shops!
@CornishWalkingTrails6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are planning a pasty tour! We were cold, the easterly wind felt like it had come all the way from Norway Brrrr! Thankfully the pub was warm - I never knew there were so many pubs in Penzance until we followed the guided walk! :)

Beautiful video!!!! In college I had a friend who came to America from Cornwall. I think she lives in Southampton these days. Alfred Hitchcock used some of the seaside sites in Cornwall. I think it was an early film called "Young and Innocent." Great Job! You'll be famous in no time. Best wishes! :-)

Hi, I'm adding my support and would appreciate yours. Please don't use the dreaded s-word. KZbin is coming down hard and spamifying them. They may also deprecate the addition by making it not count -- the addition remains but is removed from your totals! I lost over 130 on Saturday, so please do be careful. Also, it's a good idea to go slowly, watch a minute or two of someone's video (muted if you wish) before hitting the like and then adding them. We have your back! Best of luck! 'I am a creator'!

Holy head lands never knew that. Does anyone actually speak old cornish? If so how can no learn?
@CornishWalkingTrails6 жыл бұрын
The last person to speak cornish was reputed to be Folly Pentreath and she lived in Newlyn, she died about 250 years ago. Some people have tried to revive it but essentially, it is no longer spoken. The place names contain a lot of Cornish though, Porth means beach; bal is mine, carn means hill. Sarah :)
