Have to say, being from Ireland and as a viewer of many British and American soaps over the years, the British soaps win hands down. The stardard of acting in a good storyline in Corrie or Eastenders (and the late Brookside) can outdo any of those actors who receive an academdy award each year. American soaps are just melodramactic with eye candy, British soaps are for the working classes. Completely different. US can't seem to make a soap that's realistic about their society, poverty, resilence

As an American, I can honestly say I MUCH prefer British soaps! The acting is better, the characters are better developed, and the storylines are based on domestic situations. U.S. soaps have ridiculous super villains who never die; no one lives in poverty (quite the contrast to the America of today); and veteran actresses are surgically altered and still play in the same note as an ingenue (Erica Kane, anyone?). US soaps also care NOTHING about continuity -- another reason they're fading fast!

@mi9worm you said that american soaps are cheap; at least they can afford music and all those unrealistic storylines make the soap interesting. Unfortunatly english soaps are cheap and can't afford music, and no country is interested in cause they've been never dubbed or broadcasted outside U.K by adding unrealistic things into their storylines, american soaps don't become repetitive like english ones

You do not need music during acting to make soaps better if they're good enough unlike cheap American soaps with very unrealistic storylines. If you reply to this then you obviously like it because you wanted to watch it again! In fact soaps originated in this country because soap powders sponsored them. Your ones are nothing but cheap, stupid rubbish! This was the first type of soap. Those qualities and music is a feature of film, not everyday normal life. People's lives arent set to music.

Ok,I'm gonna defend Brit' 'soaps'.I'm not being wholly disparaging about American offerings but having seen enough of them it's fair to say they do tend to rely too heavily on incidental music,but that may just be the 'culture' of US soaps.But to say that 'at least US soaps can afford music' is just plain daft,lol.It's got nothing to do with budgeting.Brit' soaps concentrate on storylines & the ACTING,not some 20 piece orchestra in the background churning out the same dreary 'music'.
