A nice character based edition post Xmas.Mainly concerning the Ogdens but some of the other characters as well. It's all gearing up for the New Year's Eve Party anyway, and the end of the decade as a whole.Hope you enjoy it.

like a time machine watching these in colour for the first time, very few of us had colour TVs back then.

It is really interesting, having watched these as a child, and no a 65 year old. So well written, and also nostalgic ❤

The funny thing is I remembered all the characters names as soon as I saw them and now I can't tell most when I rarely put it on as the stories are boring or not relevant to my age which is a year younger than you. My late long gone mum used to watch it when it was good like this. The characters were full of spark like us northerners were, now it's lost its spark and cheekiness the way we used to talk to each other

Brilliant show and so nostalgic. I just love watching these old episodes of Coronation Street. The actors back then were far superior and the writers were the secret to the shows success. Fabulous.

This helps me revel in the deliciousness of being a dyed in the wool northerner! I live a long way from Cheshire now, but some of the phrases and the rich use of language takes me back! Not to mention the iconic music. Thanks chuck!

'It always comes down to folk in the end'. Such a brilliant and wise line spoken by Ena. Another perfect - and therefore riveting - episode. Brilliant acting, writing (by the great Geoffrey Lancashire, father of Sarah) directing and production - Brian Mills and especially HV Kershaw were maestros. Thank you again for bringing back such wonderful stuff after it being ridiculously unseen for over 55 years!

Has anyone noticed the change in accent over the years? Distinctly Manchester/Lancashire but precise, almost clipped here. Contrast with corrie today where 'without you' is pronounced 'wivow yuh' and 'stress' as 'shtresh'.

5:35 Alan Browning psyched himself up for the "sexual tension scene" so much, he didn't realise how loose the doors were. A metaphor if ever there was one. 5:50 70s TV directors LOVED their mirror shots. Seen many of these on Z-Cars and Softly Softly Task Force. 7:04 Tight zoom. I think the director wants us to know Ena's telling uncomfortable truths. 9:58 There's some close-in shots today. The actors would love this, the set designers not so much. 10:47 Who'd've thought Sandra Gough was a follower of the Frankie Howerd school of acting? 13:53 Alan walks through two guys even though there's plenty of room behind in the the previous shot. The director is shameless at pushing him and Elsie together. I reckon even a 1969 TV audience would have been shouting at their 15" CRT tellys "Bloody well get on with it!" 15:43 Is it just me, or does Corrie use the same backdrop blowup photo outside every front door? 16:53 Minnie Caldwell willing to work for nothing. Ah, no charity shops in 1969. Not the case now. I've worked with at least three Minnie Caldwell types in my time in voluntary work land. Cat's Protection obviously had no retail outlets back then. 17:40 The seventies are nearly here - but I'm not sure many people would have realised that Bernard Youens with his shirt unbuttoned to the navel was the harbinger. Consider yourselves enlightened, people. 20:14 Ena Sharples, a mere 9 years into working class soap-land, knows all the seasonal cliches. How meta. 22:22 One of Hilda Ogden's many "serious moments spoken offhand and unaware". Corrie's scriptwriters used her for this many, many times. Gave Jean Alexander more to do, I guess. 22:40 By 'eck. Use the zoom lens on those new cameras, lad.

Irma reminds me of Paloma Faith. Ena Sharples was such a fabulous larger than life character i just wish she could have taken than darn hairnet off time to time. Annie Walker a cross between Maggie Thatcher and the Queen lol. Am i correct in thinking Irma died being electrocuted in the bathtub?

Apparently, the reason why Ena wore a hairnet all the time was that Violet Carson was proud of her her hair and didn't want the Granada hairdressers messing about with it.

@SteveHarris-nv9iy Val was electrocuted by a 2 bar electric fire, that most of us had back then. I remember the episode. She had been washing her hair and was drying it by the fire, she was to meet Ken in the rovers and didn't turn up. My dad , being an electrician had warned us that we should never go near the fire to dry ourselves or even dry our hair, which is why he bought mum a hairdryer as soon as they had got married. So this episode, even as a child rought home what dad had been telling us.
