Jean Alexander made this show. It's never been the same since she, Stan and Eddy left, May the all rest in peace.
@glamdolly30 Жыл бұрын
💯💯💯SO TRUE! Hilda Ogden was and will forever be a national treasure. 👏👏👏Her dear friends and colleagues Bernard Youens (Stan) and Geoffrey Hughes (Eddie), as you rightly point out, were the most sublime co-stars/foils. In the late 'Seventies/early 'eighties, Hilda, Stan and Eddie became a trio more glorious than the legendary 'Three Musketeers'! The late, great JEAN ALEXANDER was quite simply one of the finest television actors this country has ever produced. She will always be among Coronation Street's TOP icons, never matched, and certainly not surpassed. Thanks to actress and star Jean Alexander's genius, Hilda was beloved by millions of viewers, all of whom felt they knew her personally. Hilda Ogden was a whole, extraordinary and totally believable character. We loved her because of her flaws, not in spite of them, and that means we loved Hilda unconditionally. What an accolade! With the guiding hand of The Street's incredible scriptwriters, Jean Alexander put her heart and soul into creating Hilda,. And it showed for every single, magical second she was on screen. You simply could not take your eyes off her. That little lady positively radiated star quality! Jean was an extraordinary woman and actor. She always knew she wanted to leave The Street in time to try her hand at other parts. And this she did with aplomb after her Rovers leaving party on Christmas Day 1987, securing leading roles in ITV drama 'Heartbeat' (when she was reunited with her old pal Geoffrey Hughes), and in popular BBC sitcom 'Last of the Summer Wine'. Though Jean didn't care for the trappings of fame, red carpet photos and all the other frou-frou that came with celebrity status, she was always totally devoted to her craft above all else. God bless her, she was the very best.

Not sure what you mean PG66 when you say episode 1936 is missing. You have it on here. It starts at 1:08:52 mins and ends at 1.31.57 mins, 1937 then commences with Rita & Mavis in the shop. In regards to episode 1936. Im afraid you are in error to say that it wasn't really an episode which contained just Len & Elsie. 1936 a full episode but was not broadcast by Thames or HTV on Aug the 8th 1979 but it was to the rest of the ITV network. Sadly then the strike action to hold and no more Coronation street or any more ITV programmes until October the 24th. Then Episode 1937 was introduced by Peter Adamson (Len Fairclough), describing what had been going on in Weatherfield to refresh everyone's memory, and for the benefit of viewers in Thames and HTV who missed episode 1936.

I could’ve sworn the strike was 1978, but then again I’m getting old 😂 I remember the blue screen where ITV was, only I was raised in Yorkshire and Yorkshire TV had the blue screen like everyone else saying sorry for the interruption in service, only they had a contact number to ring if anyone had any details about the ripper, quite unsettling as a young lad if I was in the house on my tod 😳

On the 6th August 1979 a strike started at 10.07pm at Thames Television in the London region of ITV when the ACTT (Association of Cinematograph Television and Allied Technicians) Shop Steward and two deputies were suspended for refusing to work with equipment which had been operated by management in lieu of staff from the EETPU (Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union) who were working to rule over a pay claim. A similar incident occurred at HTV in the West Country two days later over concerns about allegedly unsafe lighting rigs set up in studio by management rather than EETPU members. This meant that episode 1935/6 8th August 1979 was the last to be shown in those two regions until 24th October. On 10th August, the strike spread to the rest of the country meaning that Coronation Street was not broadcast by any ITV station for nine consecutive weeks. The dispute lasted until Wednesday 24th October when programmes resumed at 5.45pm and Episode 1937 of Coronation Street was transmitted at the usual time of 7.30pm that evening. It remains the longest transmission break in the programme's history.

Yes very much like Kate Bush in Wuthering Hieghts - or that bird of the flake advert that runs along the beach

Agreed. Emily was written as a 'plain Jane' character, yet actress Eileen Derbyshire (who played her so brilliantly for over 50 years, from 1961 - 2016 - with a brief final appearance in 2019), was a very attractive and feminine woman, petite, with a unique beauty. I loved seeing Emily with her own soft, longer hair - that terrible wig she wore so often disguised how pretty she was. At time of writing this, 6th June 2023, I'm thrilled to say Eileen Derbyshire is still with us, aged 91. I felt the same about the character Bet Lynch. Her yellowy-blonde acrylic wigs gave her a hard look. On the rare occasions you saw her own long, bleached blonde hair flowing down, she looked so much more attractive. We often saw Bet's lovely long hair when she ate breakfast with hubby Alec Gilroy, after their 1987 wedding. I just looked up Julie Goodyear's age out of curiosity, and was staggered to see she's 81 (sadly she was recently diagnosed with dementia). But I was even more surprised to see Thelma Barlow, who played the one and only Mavis Wilton (nee Riley), has reached the grand old age of 93!

@@williamf4544 I probably gave up on modern Corrie around the same time as you did! It ceased to bear any resemblance to the fantastic show it once was - far too many down & depressing stories. And when the second serial killer moved into the Street, it stretched all credibility - how likely is that to happen?! People never used to watch 'The Street' for gritty realism, rapes and murders - it's not a true crime documentary. It's supposed to be entertainment. The show used to be about life's small dramas - Hilda forging the factory girls' Pools win and being sacked for it, Ken, Mike and Deirdre's love triangle, Elsie's holiday romance turning up on her doorstep and annoying her boyfriend, etc etc. These were the kind of things that could happen to us - and no less gripping for it! The producers fell into the trap of competing with 'EastEnders' when it arrived in 1985. But it was a totally different style of show! 'Corrie' lost its heart and humour, the qualities that made it so special. When it started relying on serious crime to get viewers' attention, you knew it was all over. Thank God for vintage Corrie - these episodes are superb, the writing, characters and performances will never be bettered!
