The first death, that of May Hardman, was actually on the 30th December, 1960, not the 10th.

Ah, i do miss old Corrie a bit, I can’t say I’m a big fan of it these days. After the late 2000s I stopped being interesting, everyone is either a secret serial killer or a nutter. I completely disengaged when they killed off Kylie Platt, she was such a humorous character. Still, it’s nice to come back to these older episodes from time to time.

I wasn't even born at this time, but what exactly was the story with Joe Donnelli? From what I can make out, he'd pulled a gun on Stan and was making him sing 'Silent Night' then shot himself!

Hi, he'd killed Elsie Tanner's American husband Steve in 1968 which had driven him bonkers, hence his eventual behaviour in December 1970.

I reckon it's great writing - both these men would have fought in the war and would be used to dealing with death in that was as a coping mechanism.

Society has changed so much over that time too. The world that the original coronation Street was based on no longer exists and is long gone -when you watch old coronation Street you're basically watching social history. It's a bit like that old saying, "The past is another country. They do things differently there."

This was when the show was true to it's concept: the lives of ordinary people in an ordinary street that could be anywhere. The little everyday things that everyone could identify with. Then it took a wrong turn - the number of murders, rapes, kidnappings, disasters and violent crimes in Coronation Street has reached absurd levels. Where I live there hasn;t been a murder in the 50 years I've been there. This is no doubt true for everywhere else. Coronation Street went down a rabbit hole. Once you have a murder, everything else feels like an anti-climax. So you have to keep doing it.

That's how it used to be. Remember, it wasn't that long after WWII, with many including that copper probably, having either memories or a close connection to both world wars. Reminds me of the old joke: Sergeant Major, the drill instructor is called in to see his commanding officer. Officer tells SM that both Private Jones's mother and father have been killed in some tragic accident and to break the news to him gently, being he's the sensitive type. SM goes back out to the parade ground and barks out: *_"All those of you who are NOT orphans take one step forward, JONES WHAT THE FUCKING HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING ?"_* >

Sign of how society is totally different now. As has been pointed out, that generation had been through the war. They'd seen death all around them so were very hardened to it, because they had to be.

@@Krzyszczynski Good point. The ironic (or just plain stupid) thing is though that back in the 60s, 70s and 80s they lambasted Crossroads for many of the things that they are doing now (same goes for Emmerdale and EastEnders) which was mainly due to too many episodes (and too little finance as well tbf)

Martha's death, one of the Street's biggest ever mistakes, was done especially brilliantly. Apparently Peter Adamson (Len) delayed saying 'she's dead' hoping for a last minute reprieve enabling his words to be cut and her to survive.

@@kathp6689 Hi, because they worked so brilliantly as a trio. They were hilariously funny, with each character sparking off each other - Ena was aggressive but gentle and sensitive underneath, Minnie was mild with an underlying toughness which could cut Ena to ribbons and Martha was a gossip whousually spoke without thinking, and who therefore said things for the other two to react to. ' One of their writers put it perfectly - those three could talk about absolutely anything and it would be riveting and wonderful to write - have a look at clips of them here on KZbin.

@@tjames9698 Not sure what you mean about the producers giving probes or whatever, and as for the ghost/voice of Martha was Betty Turpin in 1976 hearing her voice despite never meeting Martha before she had passed away, it was because it was the 12th anniversary of her death?
