What a gift to have all the early episodes here; 1960s to 1980s; regret cannot tolerate today's shows.

Great characters in the series back then, especially the cantankerous old Ena Sharples and the feisty Elsie Tanner. Amazing to think this programme has been running continuously for nearly 64 years, longest-running TV soap in the world. The Archers wins the prize for longest-running radio series, having started just after WW2.

It’s amusing how all the pictures on the mantelpiece are colourised too, even though the likelihood is they’d be black and white at the time

Being in 1960 black and white makes them feel like they were in another dark old age but seeing them in colour helps bring those characters to life somewhat

I felt sorry for Frank Pemberton (Frank Barlow). They brought him back for one ep in 1971 but it was towards the end of the colour strike so his one 1970s ep was in black and white.

Sad irony that the dazzling Christine Hargreaves who plays Christine would later die of a brain tumour at only 45,just like her on screen mother here..... Interesting also that the Polish Ivan actor lived romantically with Tony Warren...

NEE THAT'S HOW IT WAS AT THE TIME ESPECIALLY BETWEEN MUMS & LATE TEEN DAUGHTERS NOT SO MUCH SO BETWEEN FATHER & SON BECAUSE THEY WERE DOWN AT MILL OR IN THE PUB PLAYING DARTS , THEY WERE LIVING IN 2 UP 2 DOWN TERRACE HOUSING, that by 1960 were 25 years out of date. THE ROOMS WERE NO BIGGER THAN A CUPBOARDS & the family's were ON TOP OF EACH OTHER, PLUS they had to deal with an outside Toilet full of flies & of course HUGE SPIDERS THAT WOULD SILENTLY CRAWL DOWN THE LONG CISTERN WATER PIPE THAT WAS BEHIND YOU AS YOU WERE SAT ON THE LOO HOW DO YOU THINK I WAS BORN my Mum & her Mum, my Gran did not get on, so at 19 Mum got pregnant with me so she would be granted a Council house of her own ( IT WORKED ) A lot of YOUNG girls gamed the system like that at the time

Do family members really speak this way to one another all the time? I couldn’t take all this constant bickering back and forth. I guess if people lived quietly and peacefully with each other it would make for a boring soap opera! PS - And all the SMOKING! 🤢🤮😵
@Thefan
@Thefan 10 ай бұрын
I'm sure there were similar conversations going on behind closed doors of houses across the country at the time, though the show is obviously exaggerated because like you say, it would be boring if the conversations were too realistic. They smoke so often on this! but its at a time where they didn't realise how bad it was for you; I think it's an interesting look back into the past - it doesn't feel like you're just watching an old show, it's like you're looking in on the culture of the time too.

My mothers family were like that always shouting at each other almost like barking you could say - I think it goes back to the parents ( my Grandparents ) not putting a stop to it when they were young - A poor family who had nought so im guessing at a young age it was survival of the fittest and so the shouting began - and never stopped
