That's the age of consent in Britain. The culture is worlds away from American culture. We graduate between the ages of 18 to 19 - they are out of school by the age of 16 in most cases unless they don't pass their test, which they won't graduate; but they have to do a test to pass so they can graduate. It is exponentially harder to pass their GCSE examination than it is for Americans to pass our SAT's by a long mile. I saw the criteria for their GCSE's and I can say that 98% of Americans if they had to take their GCSE test; they would fail spectacularly. I had a lot of British friends growing up from online and spoke with them. They are more refined/mature in compared to how we were as teens so, to answer you with a short answer; the law there considers them legal to Marry, smoke and drink (with the supervision of an adult but not always the case as 18 is the legal drinking age there. However, you can drink at 16 under adult supervision but cannot legally buy the alcohol yourself) Where as we are 21 here in the states. I know a few parents in Australia that let their child start consuming alcohol at 13 though it's not technically legal. Americans are unique in terms of maturity - we're kind of behind the rest of the world in terms of education and maturing. I think it's all the nonsense they put in our food. We have a large list of food ingredients that have been banned throughout the entire world. All except for in the USA. It explains a lot. It makes sense though - but don't entirely agree with the consent thing at 16 as the brain hasn't developed completely. Either way - hope that answers some things. Have a lovely rest of your weekend!
