Coronavirus Lockdown During Travel : I'm Stuck in Peru

Coronavirus has had a big impact on our travels. We are in Peru, and suddenly had an announcement that Peru's borders would be locked and by midnight, we will be quarantined and stuck inside the house for at least 15 days practicing social isolation to prevent the spread of the virus. All flights are blocked, transportation is shut down. We can't get home to the US. Are you traveling while Coronavirus is going around? How has it affected you? Hey guys, I feel your pain. I'm also stuck in Peru. I'm in a hotel down in Arequipa. It's closed, but the owner is letting 3 of us stay here, with no services . I stocked up on supplies yesterday, but made an excuse to get some more items today so I could go out. Best of luck. I'm feeling quite comfortable here. Lots of Netflix is right!

Yes, I am fortunate. I've been using the excuse of picking up a few grocery items to get out and walk around a little. But now I guess someone is showing symptoms of Covid-19 at a hostel about a mile from here, so the owner asked that we don't go out unless it's absolutely necessary..

I'm sure many travellers got trapped in places where they weren't planning to stay. It would be hard if stuck in a country where you didn't know anybody and couldn't speak the language. Thankfully we are in Canada now so it's pretty easy for us.

10:00 they are mandatory, appear in numerous videos of other foreign countries affected and in hindsight still used: not what makes us "feel better".They request a distance of 6ft apart and more which you may scoff (non-compliance is a felony misdemeanor).Many stores have added a plexiglas barrier for cashiers P.S. research how far and fast a virus travels in the jetstream, let alone a crowded plaza, and it's hosts include animals and it can strengthen post peak to different environs.See basic pneumonia facts, air borne spores.

We are an Australian couple also stuck in Cusco. We're scrambling to find a way home. Our consulate in Lima has closed. Our government has not offered any assistance, we were told to just abide by Peru's rules. I'll keep an eye on your posts and see how you progress.

Yoooo a Peruvian in isolation here! Sooooo you actually had 24hr to leave since the president spoke till the country was closed, many people didn't get it either but you could have found a flight to Lima and then one back to the states. Also, you can actually leave your house to buy food: all markets and food stores are allowed to be open, just no restaurants. Anyways, good luck and stay safe!

I was flying in scheduled to arrive before midnight that night, but my connecting flight to Cusco at 4 am was completely cancelled. All flights wiped. Two weeks in Peru sounds amazing even if it’s during a lock down. In Washington state in the US we’ve been in lockdown “stay in place” for about 3 going on 4 weeks, but still have a month to go. It’s the same only being able to go out for food, doctor or to a pharmacy. You guys are probably safer in terms of the virus too. It’s spreading like wild fire in the US. I'm undergoing a 14-day self isolation in Canada, which is required for anyone entering the country. That ends for me in two days and then I'm more free to go out. There isn't a mandatory lockdown up here yet.

We are staying in Cusco, it seems to be much better than it will be in California. From everything we’re hearing, it sounds like this quarantine will go on longer. For now it’s until April 12, a full month instead of the initial 2 weeks we heard at the time of this video

Avoid crowds, keep 6 feet from strangers, STOP TOUCHING YOUR FACE, wash your hands often. Check what's happening in Ecuador. Be safe. Un abrazo !

Use your time in a productive and creative way. Learn Spanish, learn about the history of this wonderful country. You are lucky because in Peru they are taking good measures in order to prevent the grow of the pandemic there. it is not about being #stuckinperu as you all called..it is major in outbreak, it is happening to the entire world. Groceries and pharmacies are still open as an essential necessity. Im in NYC where as if the authorities would have done the lock down days ago, then I wouldn't be #stuckinNYC. President Viscarra did an amazing job by closing the borders quickly that minimized the outbreak by thousands.

Hey guys, I feel so bad for you. I wish you could've had an amazing experience down there, but this happened. I'm originally from Lima- Peru, but have been living in the States for quite a while. Here's crazy too as you already now. But I think it's easier down there in a way, because at least you're always going to find somebody selling some produce or food on the streets. Here we just have to rely on the supermarkets or buying on line. Well, the stores are pretty much bare and you cannot find everything you need on line at this moment. We just have to buckle up I suppose, since this is affecting people everywhere. Hope you are able to go back to Peru when everything goes back to normal. God bless.

INSANE! We were just in Cusco until Saturday! The streets, shops, and restaurants were filled with people! The only obvious indicator there, of any shortage and/or pandemic concern, was one person we saw selling toilet paper on the streets. But, there were hundreds of people in the border patrol lines at the airport. I had my scarf over my face the entire time, and made the guy checking my fingerprint to sanitize the machine before I put my finger on it, which he willingly did, AFTER I requested it. Whenever possible, I stood as far away from others as possible...but couldn't help the closer contact with other passengers in the lines and on the plane, although I sanitized everything before coming into contact with anything. On the brighter side, we made it back safely, and I am in isolation, alone in my own home, well, so far, and I'm over 60. And for your sake, thank goodness you are in a house, so you can cook your own food. :-) it just sucks you are stuck in a foreign country with people who barely speak any English(we found this to be the case). Well wishes for a safe and timely trip back to the States! I heard there are some larger groups stuck there seeking help from the U.S. military to aid in expediting their transport back to the U.S. Hope you can find them and get some info to help yourselves to get out, soon, too. I posted pics on FB of the day we visited Machu Picchu...it was the last day(Wed. week ago) before they shut that down! We had no idea until we heard later about it! Suzanne Dansby

This sprung on us very quickly and we wouldn’t have had time to get out even if we did everything possible. It will be interesting to see how many Americans get flown back home. We have entered the Restriction on Movement period here in Malaysia. Luckily we had been stocking up on food for a few days and are renting a nice apartment. So now we stay put. No eating at local restaurants or sightseeing. We're happy we're in a comfortable safe place. Stay healthy! 🌺 Heidi

@9:54 Those masks DO work in that they will lessen your chance of exposure. The only reason people say not to wear them is because we have a shortage, and hospitals need them. WHO suggests you SHOULD wear a face mask if you are sick or taking care of someone that is sick. How do you know those people wearing masks are not sick? It is estimated 82% of people are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. Also, wearing a mask is not just for them, it is also for you. If that person is infected, they are also protecting YOU by wearing that mask. While those masks are not 100%, they are definitely more effective than not wearing one at all, and are more comfortable than n95 masks. And not everyone can afford n95 masks, especially in Peru. My hospital in USA can barely supply n95 masks... Just FYI.

Peruvians are used to cooking pasta sauce from scratch, just recently a few industrial varieties have been introduced (or you can buy fresh ones in fancy Italian delis) but they are not massively consumed. Lol...I know it's such a shock when people come from abroad and the only option is to cook it from scratch, it happened to me after years of living in Canada!

Hi guys...I was planning my trip to Peru with my 17 years old boy, my 17 yo step son and my son's friend 19yo...planning for months and months tickets Chicago-Lima round trip, Lima- Cusco round trip and wonderful tours with hotel included. Arriving to Lima on March 16 and returning to USA on March 23, guess what, I decided to cancel the trip on March 13...yes I was still having some hope about all this craziness. Really guys am a mother of 2, my little one is 5 yo I cannot imagine being away from him or my love partner for too long. @@AlexanderTravelbum So far, most of China is still on lockdown. It's been well over 3 months now. Even with the so called, "restrictions being lifted" in Wuhan, people still cannot move anywhere. China is getting ready to enter into month 4 of the lockdown. The rest of the world is just entering into the lockdown phase. How long will it last, no one can say for certain but the NIAC issued a report in 2018 asking Americans to be prepared to survive without electricity for up to 6 months or up to a year without power from the grid.

I have the same situation right now in Malaysia, my hotel will close in two days and all of the other hotels as well (at least that's what they told me) so I have to find a new accommodation without being able to book hotels or Airbnb's 🙈

This is likely going to go on for a long while. Here in Australia they are talking of at least 6 months. Possibly longer. All borders are closed here too. Same in New Zealand. So if I were you I'd get a longer term B&B arrangement and stock up on dry legumes: peas, beans, lentils etc. I'd get another couple of trays of eggs, get milk powder rather than bottles or cartons, canned fruit and veggies. And buy some Sangre de Grado. At some stage you will likely catch a tummy parasite. It's common. Sangre de Grado is a brown liquid tree sap from the jungle that heals and disinfects wounds fast and is excellent for maintaining a healthy gut (10 drops under tongue then drink water, it's butter but bearable). It will help keep the worst at bay if you do get a parasite. But you can get an over the counter anti parasitic medicine. 6 tablets over 3 days or 14 over 7 depending on severity. Both work really fast. Always wash your fruit and veggies in boiled water only and never drink tap water until you've boiled it. Even then, buying water is still safer. But if you can't find any, you can boil it, cool it and then drink it. You'll be fine. Perú will soon be far better off than the USA. At least people are helpful and kind and do help if you are, respectful and helpful towards them. And they all have huge families with lots of properties and farm lands too. Everything grows in Perú. And fast. Think about what you can barter in exchange for food and later even accommodation. Don't fear. I've lived there on and off for 7 years and I'd much rather be there than in Australia right now. But it cannot be helped. All is on lockdown indefinitely. Re toilet paper. If you can't find any, get paper towel rolls. You can cut them in half. Also gets some small towels. Once you run out of toilet paper you can use and reuse them after washing. Wet wipes or baby wipes are a good idea too. Don't worry. You will get through this. Use your seclusion time to meditate lots as it will keep you sane, peaceful and high vibing and to study Latin Spanish on Babbel. It will do wonders for you once you know the lingo better. I'd also befriend some local cops. They are usually really friendly and once you know one you will usually generally get better treatment and you'll also get the inside scoop on what's coming. Stay safe and always greet people friendly. Native Peruvians will open their hearts and often homes and families to you when you act with respect, warmth, care and courtesy at all times. And it's a good idea for you both to make local native friends there. It happens faster than you think. There are shady characters too. So don't get gullible either. But the majority is super warm and genuinely friendly. Good boundaries around giving out money or things is a good idea because people do tend to get a bit pushy sometimes. Hey Guys, buy long lasting food... you dont know how long this will quarentine is going to be in place, it could go longer than expected. Purhcase lots of pastas, rice, bullions for flavoring your soup or stews, lentils for protein, beans, garlic, onion, polenta. Eggs are good, try to stay away from the prepackaged stuff, like cereal and chips...it will eat through your budget and not add any nutrition. I love eggs, and the good thing, they don't need refrigeration. I was in Spain between Sept and mid October in 2019. How I wished we could have stayed longer, but when we were there, there was no talk of covid until late December 2019. All hell opened up in 2020, and spread quickly. I was home already on 13th October 2019.

I think stay where you’re at would be much safer. In the United States the cases of coronavirus are increasing like crazy especially in New York Washington and California and many other cities. At least you’re in a country where you have very little cases and not as much is in the United States. Currently in the United States we have 33,404 cases and in Peru they only have 395 cases currently. So it’s a big difference. I would suggest you guys get some cleaning products while it’s available and stock up on some more food. Get some gloves some masks if available And just wait it out and just make the best of it while you’re there. Until everything gets better. Anyway be safe
