Coronavirus (the virus that causes COVID-19) is tested by collecting a sample from the nasopharynx (throat behind the nose) with a swab. The test checks for the RNA of the virus.

I was tested here in Scotland and they swap the throat and swab the nose. So glad we don’t have that test I wouldn’t cope 😂

The test doesn’t necessarily hurt, it’s more of a burning sensation. Most uncomfortable thing I have ever done.

I had the test when I was in the hospital,. More uncomfortable then in the pneumonia or flu virus. Yay I don't have the virus 😷😫😣😭.

Not sure you could swab my nose like that. I've had extensive surgery on my nose and also have a hole in my septum.

Can you explain why you have to go to the back of the throat to get a sample, but we can spread the COVID with salivary or nasal mist/spray by coughing or sneezing? Seems a normal, oral swab would suffice.

There are studies showing that we can get nearly as good of a sample from the front of the nose. This is becoming more of a normal practice. The risk is missing some positive patients.
