If we place the camera outside the building like at the entrance gate and it's very hot outside. Is the result can be accurate?
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff! That is a very good question! There are several challenges with imaging outside. A hot background can create false alarms, if the region of interest used for the measurement accidentally includes it. In addition, people's skin temperatures may be warmer than usual, or appear colder, if they are sweating. This is due to the evaporative effects on the surface of the skin. The skin temperature can be affected for up to 30 min after entering an air conditioned building.

@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
There can be. I am assuming that you are referring to elevated body temperature screening, so I will answer with that in mind. People that are standing in cold or hot weather will have colder or warmer skin surface temperatures for example. People that sweat i.e. from running may appear colder to the camera, due to the evaporative cooling effects, just to name a few.

So, I have a flir C2 and I was testing my wife body temperature and calibrating the camera to get almost an exact body reading of 37C spending an hour and the results were - + 2 Celcius , very dificult to be accurate to detect prfect body temperature.
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi Roberto! Great observation! That is what I am trying to explain. These cameras are not better than +/- 2C. Make sure you set the emissivity setting of your camera to 0.98, which is the correct value for human skin. Another issue you are facing with the C2 is that the detector of that camera only has a resolution of 80 x 60 pixels. It is very challenging to get enough pixels over the tear duct area. We recommend 8 to 10 pixels, to measure temperature of that recommended region. Also, typically, the human face skin temperature will be around 35C, so about 2 degrees lower than the standard 37C body core temperature. That is to be expected and has nothing to do with the accuracy of the camera.

Hi, thank you for the video. I have some doubts regarding how the camera measure the temperature and also how it differentiate a human body temperature with other temperature measurements. Does it uses image processing or machine learning technologies? I would like to know more
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nasim! Great questions! These cameras use a so-called microbolometer detector, which measures infrared radiation or energy. This is then in turn converted into a temperature measurement. This is only true for camera that have a radiometric calibration - or temperature calibrated cameras. Here is an article I wrote that goes into more detail: movitherm.com/knowledgebase/thermal-infrared-imaging-explained/ The image processing is either built into the camera, if it is a smart camera, or it is being performed in software. There are some machine learning applications, but the actual temperature measurement does not require deep learning or AI.

Hey can i use FLIR AX8 with focus on forehead area, say at distance of 35 cm to get exact temperature
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi Amrit! Exact within +/- 2 Celsius. So that approach will unfortunately not work very reliably. The distance to the face of 35 cm helps with the limited resolution of the camera, which only has 80 x 60 pixels for the thermal detector. However, the temperature accuracy is not good enough for elevated body temperature measurements, I am afraid.

would a hand held FLIR ONE PRO LT USBC be accurate enough? I realize its resolution is much worse. Where can you buy flir cameras for this purpose is there one you recommend?
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi Adil! I am afraid not. the Flir One Pro LT is only accurate to +/- 3 degrees Celsius or +/- 5%. Even if you would hold it close to somebody's face, it wouldn't be accurate enough. All of these type of cameras are no better than +/- 2 degrees C, even if you would purchase a better camera. Therefore you must use an external black body as a reference source. This would allow you to temporarily calibrate out this tolerance. Using a black body can get you to an accuracy of about +/- 0.3 degrees C.

Hi Warren! Pretty much every thermal camera of this type is no better than +/- 2C in accuracy. This is not enough to accurately measure body temperature. The right way to do this is to use a reference temperature source in the image. The idea is to calculate out the inaccuracy. Does handheld camera works also? PerfectPrime has a new one saying their accuracy can be ± 0.3°C (± 0.6°F)
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi Prateek! A handheld thermal camera (microbolometer) cannot be accurate to ± 0.3°C (± 0.6°F), unless you put that camera into a very tightly controlled thermal chamber. Anybody claiming this may be cheating with their specifications by taking a few measurements during a very short time period and therefore ignoring the inherent temperature drift. If I talk 10 measurements per second, my accuracy can be very close. Usually about 10 x the NETD value of the camera or thereabout. However, if you specify accuracy, you need to consider the total operating temperature range of the thermal camera over a longer period. Most people don't understand this and are easily fooled by these claims. We sell cameras that cost >$150,000 and even those don't have that kind of an accuracy. Simple physics! movitherm.com/knowledgebase/netd-thermal-camera/

Hi sir, I think this setup is much costly. Can you recommend any other sensors or some other process to measure the temperature of the body which is at a distance of 1000mm
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi Akash! Yes, these cameras are not cheap. However, there is a reason for it. You need a camera with at least 320 x 240 pixel resolution in order to project enough pixels across the face, especially the tear duct region. The face should fill out about 50 to 75% of the image size at the working distance that you mentioned of 1m. Additionally, you would need to use a calibrated black body to eliminate the measurement error of these cameras, which is about +/- 2C.

I have the flir infrared camera that I use to test heat on machines at work, can i also use it on humans?
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Not knowing what model camera you have, I am assuming the accuracy is +/-2C. That tolerance is large enough to create a lot of false positive or false negative readings. To use this technology correctly, you'll need a calibrated temperature reference source in the image to eliminate that tolerance. You will also need sufficient pixels (8 to 10) over the tear ducts on the inner eye. The subject cannot wear any glasses, as the thermal camera cannot see through glass or plastic. Here is an article that explains this in more detail: movitherm.com/knowledgebase/coronavirus-screening-for-elevated-body-temperature/

So many different false negatives , false positives that can happen here , either one being false could jeopardize someone's job
@movitherm4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct and bring up some very valid points. It is important that people understand the limitation of this technology. All a thermal camera is capable of doing is to measure skin surface temperature. If somebody is asymptomatic, which is often the case with COVID-19, that person might do undetected. However, the same would be true using a simple oral thermometer. These are real challenges and they should be taken seriously, no doubt. The only method to determine a viral infection is performing a viral test. However, that is impractical on a daily basis for everybody entering a building for example. So what are we left with? We are left with being able to at least do something about it. Nobody should look at this as a guarantee for anything. It is merely an adjunct screening device for detecting variations in skin surface temperature. A medical professional needs to be consulted for rendering any sort of diagnosis.
