I don't care how much of a former athlete a person is- a fall like that can be deadly for a senior person-my grandmother was still climbing ladders to pick pears in her 80's-but then she fell off of the ladder, broke her collar bone and arm then went totally down hill physically & mentally and died within a couple of months-I know of quite a few elders who passed from similar things-RIP lovely Ivana
@grayhatjen5924
@grayhatjen5924 2 жыл бұрын
I'm almost wondering if being a former athlete could have exacerbated her mobility issues in general. I mean being a skier, I'd imagine hips and knees would have the biggest potential for problems later in life. But you're right, falls are absolutely deadly especially in a person's older years. My grandma broke either her hip or leg the night before one of my sister's got married, and like your grandma, she never recovered. It was so hard to watch. I was 10, I think? She came to live with us in the hopes that she would recover but she didn't. And we had to end up doing the whole nursing home thing. It all hurt, a whole lot. I often wonder if we go too far with medicine etc late in life. My other grandmother lived to be 91 but the last decade of her life was filled with so much pain. In Ivana's case though, she was so young. RIP indeed

yes ma'am my 79 year old grandmother was a retired teacher but went to work everyday of the school year helping out and she got in her car one evening and her gas peddle stuck and raed into the side of the school and it didn't do nothing but cut her head and she was still walking but slower her down so much within a few months she was totally not able to walk and her legs would weep of fuild puddle under her feet they had to be wrapped and she was dead within a year...so yes one small booboo can take a elderly person out . my grandmother was on the go till that day..I'm sorry to hear you have been through that also...oh but also while in the hospital they dropped her and broke her back also ...they tried to hide it and blamed her but come to find out nope it wasn't her fault at all all theirs..

My mom had a fall down a few concrete steps in her early forties. She crushed the bones in her back and was in pain until she died at 86. The injury couldn't be repaired. I'll never forget something very wise Ivana said on a daytime talk show. She said: "I never say bad things about my ex-husband, because if I'm trashing him, I'm also trashing my kids because they are a part of him." (Paraphrased,) Couples say horrible things about each other. Especially when they are going thru a divorce. The kids here it all and they think it's their fault. I hope someone who is going thru a divorce & has kids, will remember Ivana's wise words.

She looked very fragile, almost as if she had Dementia. My mom is almost 80 (a few months) and she does more than I do at almost 60. My mom looks at least 15+ years younger than she is. She does 1 to 2 hours of yard work every day. I have no idea. She lost her mom at 55, her sister at 58, and her niece at 56 and it just keeps going on. 7 dead siblings, niece, and mother, all died very young. It's a family trait, but not a good one. She survived them all, but she did have several instances where (by rights) she should have been dead, yet she survived them. I'm so proud of her, mainly for trying so hard and succeeding so well. You're my rock I love you always and thank you for giving me life. 💖💝

i think her accident was avoidable. like i get it people want to stay in the same place where they built decades of memories but past the age of 60 its time to downscale and move into an apartment with no stairs and one door only and just the elevator.For me its the fact that she has 3 adult children and they ain't hired someone to do regular welfare check on her with all the money that they have. and they should have moved closer . they've got the means. sheeeeeish the trumpses are selfish people.

A fall is definitely a warning shot for seniors and unfortunately in Ivana's case, can be fatal. But there are always opportunities to heal and experience a long and healthy life for seniors before and after a fall. She was 73, lived a life of luxury and kept men who were much younger. When asked about why younger men she said....'I'd rather be a baby sitter than a nurse maid'!! She had a 'life and lived it on her terms. RIP Ivana Edit: From my post above, quoting Ivana, to a light hearted reply of ' I wonder where her soul is right now' from Shelly Moore to a full on Louisa Edike's comment 'you should be more worried about where yours will go'. In my opinion, there was no need for Louisa's comment. I read her comment as overly righteous, patronising and a mere projection due to her using the words 'YOU should be' rather than 'WE should be' and comments thereafter just solidified my opinion that much more. I believe in live n let live, but don't agree with people who try to overly stuff their beliefs down people's throats or chastise them for not living or believing the same as themselves, and usually engaging this behaviour while being & living the exact opposite of what they're trying to preach. That, to me, is the hypocrisy that is plaguing the earth in these times, and whether I believe in heaven or hell, God or Satan, it's traits like this that are the ugliest by far, of a fellow human being. And that is all I have to say on the topic. Thank you for your time and have a lovely day or night.

But that expression of his was completely genuine and my heart broke for him in that moment. What a grand lady she was and the epitome of the “mom-extraordinaire.” She claimed the success of her children growing up into the highly functioning people they are today and capable of working alongside their driven father. Yes she was grand, but also devoted to the priorities of her life, and that is certainly evidenced in her children. Balance is something we have to work at as we age. There are many contributors to falls - some of which are weak abdominal's, weak legs. weak ankles, medications that make you dizzy and vestibular problems. People can go to a physical therapist and get a balance test to see if they are at risk. Prayers for the family. So sorry for your loss.

Also not living in a two story house as we get older is important.

It is very, very painful to use stairs with a bad hip. From photos they look like they're marble. They are spiral in places where each step is cut at an angle making them extremely narrow toward the wall. If she was carrying a cup of coffee she was probably paying more attention to not spilling the coffee than where she was placing her feet. She should have had an assistant living with her. Her kids should have gotten involved with that. I would hope she had an elevator, but she probably enjoyed the drama of using her grand staircase more. So sad.

73 is kind of young to need a live-in assistant, but with her hip issue, a huge house, and her need for security having so much wealth, her family should have been more firm. Every elderly person I've known has refused to admit they need help. They're stubborn, but the family must persist. It's a difficult stage to deal with. For most families, trying to figure out the financial arrangements for live-in help or which child to move in with causes a lot of family conflict, but it has to be done. However, since she was so rich, the finances for live-in help could have easily been handled by them, unlike the rest of us. Further, I don't think she should have ever been allowed to live alone with all that money. She was an easy target. I know they said there was a coffee cup near where she was found. They didn't say if there was coffee spilled on the stairs or splashed on the walls. Was there any coffee on the stairs or wall? If she was holding coffee and fell down the stairs acquiring all those bruises, there should have been coffee everywhere, unless it was a covered container. If there was coffee everywhere, they would have suggested the 'fell down the stairs scenario' first, instead of the 'cardiac arrest' scenario. It's just a question I have.

Even the restaurant where she went for soup a week ago, reported that she was in good spirits, but ate very little and it was obvious she wasn't well. Why in the world are you trying to make something of it that is no more than perfectly normal. 73 is NOT young. The media gets disgusting with its determination to cause chaos where there is none. I did home care giving for around 10 years in total so far through my life. It can be really difficult to convince the aging people in your life, that you love and care for, to take precautions for accidents like this, to slow down, to accept help when they're use to being independent. I imagine Ivana was probably no different, especially having been an Olympic athlete. It can be really hard for someone who did as extreme a sport as downhill skiing that the stairs in their home are a concern you have for them. Very sad. I've seen this happen to often. Or even aging persons driving longer than they should have. It can be a really difficult conversation to have, but it's SOOOOO important. There are resources available online and in your local DSHS (Department Social Health Services- for Aging and Long Term Care support, or whatever it's equal is near you). I can't stress the importance enough, it really CAN BE life or death. Rip Ivana edit***! Please note I'm not saying ALL aging persons are in need of this. But when signs begin presenting themselves, it's good to have a plan of action for open and honest conversation. Because we love our friends/family members/mentors etc. And we'd like for them to remain living & safe as long as possible. When they start having falls repeatedly from rugs, stairs, etc that never gave trouble before. Or backing up into things in their cars and not thinking that it's a big deal when it's unlike them, that's a problem. There are usually other warning signs too. I have an 80 year old great aunt who is still 100% capable and independent of using stairs and driving. She even wins car shows with her awesome Cougar car collection !

While I was on that call, my mother was outside picking up sticks and pine cones on the other side of the house. She fell and hit her on the ground and spent the next ~ten minutes dragging herself to a patio chair and pulling herself up and sitting in it. By the time I went outside to see what she was up to, she had been sitting in the chair ~five minutes and was still so exhausted she could barely talk. I called for an ambulance and she was taken to the ER for a brain scan and she was fine. But, scary, how easily an elderly person can injure themselves and possibly die because they don't have a lot strength. My mother takes a blood thinner and that was the first question the paramedics asked her, did she take a blood thinner. If she had hit her head on the concrete patio which she was standing right next to instead of hitting it on the dirt, she probably would have had a brain bleed and died before I casually walked out to the patio to have a chat with her. PS: The lesson learned from this is your elderly loved one needs a medical alert service even when they live in the same house with you or others. I pray that my mother passes peacefully in her sleep, not because she fell and hit her head and died alone, distraught, in pain, and scared.

What was wonderful about her? Curious? Was she a philanthropist? Or the fact that she produced 2 disgusting sons who spend tons of money to kill animals like elephants?

You know...my aunt was hauling a big dumpster when cleaning houses. The dumpster shifted and pushed her up against a wall. Neighbors moved it so she could get out and she was fine. A bit sore but later she was resting on the couch after it happened and she increasingly started not to feel well. She made it to the ER and not only did she rupture her spline but she was bleeding internally really bad from injuring some other organ, I forget which. She barely survived and she wasn't the same nor could she work after the accident. It was really unbelievable to her neighbors how well she walked away to end up barely dying later the evening. So...yeah...it can happen.

Oh nooo. Older people shouldn't live alone but sometimes most of them and relatives think they're still able to manage alone. So sad, she couldn't even reach her phone 😪

I would live alone. Most ladies in their 70s and 80s live alone. Until we have a health issue, physical or mental, we live alone.

I had seen that she had a heart condition, not as healthy as you may think and her close friend said she's always been concerned about the way her stairway was made that she feared she would fall on them. Let the poor lady rest in peace.

@@louisehicks3285 Hi, if you haven't seen them by now, I saw them on Utube. .with knowing her physical problems, why put herself in harms way? Goodness, may she not have been too proud to accept being a senior with a painful hip. I'm 79 with health issues, live alone in a one floor apartment and have life alert. Sometimes, for no reason, I am just standing and lose my balance. I fell once and bounced against the filing cabinet then landed softly and safely in the close basket. After reading about others who have fallen, I need to be more serious about safety and pass the word around. I feel awful that all could have been avoided, just by arranging the bedroom downstairs. Ppl, lets be alert. Do what is in our ability to eliminate accidents. PLEASE!!!
