@@Impedancenetwork It still plays music, just with mp3, but I do listen more to podcast rather than music when doing runs, so it is not an issue with me. Also the build quality makes it worth the $699 price tag. At $499 it is so much a bargain, I think it is worth the actual price tag, taken everything into consideration. The build quality + awesome batterty life makes up for the additional $200.

Excellent review Ray! To get into the map without loading a course you can hold the bottom right button in an activity and select "map" without actually leaving the activity. It's not great because you can't jump back and forth from the map view quickly since it doesn't become a data page but in a pinch you could still view it while your mid-activity. Nice work as always! Looks like you've been spending lots of time on the trails!
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Yup indeed. The good news is that COROS says they're looking to add the map data page as a standard-issue field without routes. As you noted, you can do the toolbox option, but it's cumbersome and also resets your zoom each time to way high up, so it's kinda hard to use.

I get the price is high, but really the reason people pay big money for watches like this over a plastic watch with similar, if not more mature features, is ultimately the same reason people have paid big money for watches long before they became smart... materials, craftsmanship, bullet proof finishes, and ultimately, how many times someone says "that's a killer looking watch bro"... I've tried every single one of Garmin's latest watches to replace my aging F3 HR, and while sure I like the better sensors and sleep metrics and V4 HR sensor of the venue 2, the 955, I just couldn't get excited about putting them on every day. So for those of us who are not climbing mountains every weekend, or running full iron mans, this watch is very tempting, as it's freaking awesome looking. Also, the larger screen is a big plus for these aging eyes. I can remember when I got my Fenix 3, I'd get a nice watch comment weekly. While the watch is still my favorite watch of all time, those days are gone (it still looks cool, but it's pretty scratched up/grey, sans the sapphire screen) and I never once got complements with any non metal watches. The Suunto 7 garnered a few, but it was truly a horrible experience with Wear OS and half day battery. Thus, I'll likely plunk down the money for this new big screen diamond studded bracelet, optimistic Coros improves some of the caveats in time. Also, many other reviewers did note a small improvement over Garmin's RE GPS accuracy, so I suspect if you are often in challenging tracking areas, this is best-in-class, and as Ray says, competitors are likely to follow suit. The music loading looks clunky ( sounds like Coros didn't/couldn't pay the big bucks to Spotify and others to integrate services), the HR sensor is probably not perfect, and the maps hopefully someday will at least include trail names, but as a mountain biking, roadie, and cross fit enthusiast: HR straps are still vital (particularly for intervals), one giant downloaded playlist is a good enough fit, and a watch will never fully supplement a bike PC for things like power (indoor or out). So the only question for me is: which color garners more "what type of watch is that bro!?!?!" comments??

I agree, Garmin is too pricey for those extra features above the COROS V2. Seems that this is the sweet balance between build quality, battery life and price. This is the 90% for my needs for 70% of the price incomparison the Garmin Fenix 7x, and $300 is a lot of money. Just imagine what shoe could you buy with $300.

What I miss is the torchlight functionality in general, I knew from Garmin and could be put as shortcut direct to one button. I use this on daily basis. I pleased Coros to set this up as well. Additional I miss the opportunity for weather/temperature widget to be shown at all, or maybe at main catch face page. Last but not least, I miss the opportunity to modify watch faces itself, so that I can choose the data I would like to see, until now most of them are setup by default. If this will be changed I will take the chance to buy coros vertex 2 and sell my Garmin Enduro, maybe... Sounds silly, but I love the Coros watch faces at all, which I miss from Garmin, as most of them still very old fashioned, also the external once from the store. You're looking so often at the watch (face) so for me a nice one makes the difference. DCR - You're doing outstanding nice job with your channel and hard work behind :-) I love it!

You hit the nail on the head with this. Price. At $699 there is already a watch that, when all the sensors are on and you're using per second recording, has a battery life that will meet most people's requirements and is far off the Vertix 2's, is more fully featured, and has ANT+ - the fenix 6X Pro. @Dcrainmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I think the sapphire display/glass bit is a tricky one. I think it's more of a personal aesthetic thing. I didn't get a way to fit it into the video (or post, now that I think of it), but to me the Vertix 2 doesn't have quite the same level of material fit/polish that we've seen from Suunto or Garmin's most recent units. Meaning, it reminds me a lot of Garmin's first Fenix edition (Fenix 1) - where it was like "Oh yeah, that looks nice compared to before", and then a 'watch person' comes along and makes you realize it's missing that next level of polish (compared to what we see in a Fenix 6 for example). Again, it's all subjective preferences though at that point.

I watched their live announcement. The dual frequency GPS, is a first, but it's going to murder the battery life, whatever Coros says. Topo maps have been around for years now on other brands and limited maps are coming to prior gen watches. ECG is nice, but untested, music finally is here too, but meh, that thing is a chunky beast. And I'm a Coros owner! Have the Apex Pro and this left me going, "what's the point?" And, "Not at that $699 price point!" And certainly not with their tired app that isn't getting an overhaul and pathetic 3rd party support. Gpx and downloading maps sounds annoying. What Watch has a simpler way to download hiking trails?
@Dcrainmaker
@Dcrainmaker Жыл бұрын
Dividing that answer into two parts. The first is maps themselves, Garmin is really the only other option that has maps (though, of course, far better/deeper/everything) more maps than anyone else. Suunto only has it on their well aged Suunto 7 (Wear OS) watch. Polar doesn't have maps. As for the second part, the downloading of the trails, Suunto/Polar/Garmin all support automatic sync of routes to the watch from their app and partners (e.g. Komoot/etc...), as well as support GPX files if you want that too.

Great review. Most reviews focus on running and swimming, usually following an already fixed path. Freestyle hiking, in many cases, has a starting point, target point and the adventure in between. A map on the watch is nice to have, GPS accuracy is crucial, which watch would you take for such an adventure?

I wonder why they put the dial on the right side. That seems perfect for left-handed people, but an awkward position for right-handed people.

You can have the dial where you want. You can configure on the app on which arm you will wear, left or right, and configure where you want to have the dial then. In case for the Apex pro, so I think this is for all watches

COROS has been around a few years now. They do good work, and move very quickly. But yes, they've often flirted with replicating Garmin aspects a weeeeee bit closely (including exact fonts and icons in the past).

I bet some company could break into our sport and make a dint in the Garmin dominated market. I feel like Coros did that with Ultra running. Currently it doesn't feel like Coros is super interested but damn that Pace 2 is an affordable option for triathletes. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Super disappointing about this new release. As a Chinese, I've been really proud seeing Coros capturing the market in the past years with it's unique advantages, budget friendly and impressive battery life. It's really sad to see that they deciced to do what Chinese campanies have been notorious for, direct copying from Garmin and then mark up the price. Hope they will keep their business practices honest and rely on making good products for sales instead of marketting.

Man, I was excited about this watch until you mentioned it doesn't have ANT+. Dead on arrival for me. I do too much indoor riding not to have a watch that doesn't have ANT+. It's a must if you wanna pair that power meter with your iPad and the watch at the same time. Again, I love this watch and it was definitely a contender to replace my Garmin. Especially because of the touchscreen perk when using the maps. But I guess I'll just keep my 945 for a weeee longer.

I'm actually disappointed. A bigger watch for more $$$. Not what I was looking for. At all. Think about that. The equivalent to Garmin releasing the Fenix 7 and saying. The only Fenix 7 model we're releasing this year is the Fenix 7X. And it starts at 700$. Sorry guys. No smaller or cheaper versions. You're shit out of luck! I think Coros missed the mark on this. By that being only having the one model/size and the price. And this was not the "game changer" Coros was/is claiming. I'm calling it now, this is not going to be a huge seller.
