Thanks for the bowline lesson. I am 77 now and in my younger years I worked on an overhead line crew. The Forman handed me a piece of cotton line about 6 feet long and showed me your second version of the bowline (through the loop around the back and back through the hole) . He said keep that line with you and when I point you tie the bowline. That worked for over 50 years. I have 6 feet or an arm span of paracord on my desk and when you showed me your first way I practiced that while watching KZbin. I just got back from camping with my son and my tent guy lines were long. One end had a dog bone and the other end tied to the tent. I did like you showed timing around a tree. It was real easy to run the long end through the tent pull out and pinch the loop with the slack end. easier than running the long end through the loop around the standing end and back into the loop. Always use the second method now. Thanks for all your videos.

Basic knots are one of the most neglected skills. Back when I was a scout leader we used to require all the boys to carry a 6 ft shank of rope. We would start each weekly meeting with a knot test. Every boy in our troop could tie a square knot, bowline, clove hitch, timber hitch, taught-line hitch and larks head blind folded. Now I have also adopted the arbor knot into my repertoire. Gotta say... your a better instructor than your previous employer, you explain without rambling, and without rushing through the process. Just enough example of uses without overwhelming with too many examples. You go step by step instead of doing the process too quickly. You teach for understanding, and understand how people learn. The most concise, comprehensive video tutorial for the basic, best rope craft for the camper to date. The only surprise to me is that you didn't show how that same initial platform is also the core of the trucker's hitch. We were taught to tie a one handed Bowline when I was in the Boy Scouts. I have no idea how many people I have taught to tie it in the last 50+ years. It could save your life. Excellent video.

Love them knots. I grew up in the scouts and learned so many knots not realizing how handy they were. A bowline and timber-hitch are knots I could tie in my sleep, but a slipknot with an overhand stop knot was never in the BSA field guides. Shocking now that I see how useful and prolific it is in all your videos. Keep up the good work.

I've been using this method for my knot stuff for years. Not fancy or flashy, but gets the job done and I love showing others how easy it is to use these few knots, all based off the slipknot... Bowline, Marline Spike hitch, arbor knot.. My other fave knot is the truckers knot with the auto lock version.... Works great with cheap carabiners.. Great video and explanation on this.

I can't stress how important 11:34 is. If you're learning (or teaching others) - the slip knot is really the place to start. The slip knot leads to the arbor knot, the bowline, the marlinspike and also the 'pulley' for the truckers hitch. I learned this all from the Corporal's earlier videos from many years ago. I've been teaching this to boys in the neighborhood and this is exactly the progression I use. Well done video, as always. And, hey, thanks for teaching me, so I can teach others.

Been a sub for a year or two now, love the content. As a Eagle Scout, a huge DIYer, and outdoors person your skills your teaching are very useful. Some of the skills I already know but i make sure to keep your videos playing in the background to make sure you get the credit that you deserve. As an electrician, knots are very important for rigging equipment and pulling wire. The marlin spike hitch and bowline are by far the most used and I find myself constantly having to teach it to people. From now on I’m gonna link them this video since you teach it much better than I do. Thanks

Love the showing of the relation between all these! That's very memorable and useful. Fast Bowline - take the tag end between your index and middle finger and place it over the line, twist the line into a loop (downward towards you), wrap the tag end around the upper line, pull the tag end though the loop. Very fast. It's a lot like the one hand bowline, but you use your fingers instead of your wrist. Works great on smaller cordage like paracord.

When I went through our fire academy in 1993, we had to tie various knots with a 30 second time limit for each one. I used this slip knot method for tying a bowline around a fixed object in less than 3 seconds. Everybody watching said, "How did you do that?" "Magic," I replied.😁

I mentioned in another comment on an older video that I've never seen anybody tie a bowline with the loop flip and landing technique before. I find that so much easier to do than the traditional method "rabbit goes around tree"....I'll be doing it like that in general from now on...thanks for that.

the one handed knot might be a "what if" , but apparently even the PA game commission taught us in the safety course how to make a splint. I doubt i will ever break a leg or arm in the woods, but they were pretty certain we would haha. I guess tree stand accidents are a common thing and it never bad to have one more "tool for the toolbox" as they say.

Great tutorial on basic knots. I learned the one handed bowline back in 1978 when I did some mountain climbing in the Teton range. I did a two day trip to the summit of Grand Teton (13,775 feet/ 4199M) mountain including open air repelling down off the back side. You can tie a clove hitch around an open top post like found on a dock in a matter of seconds. Just throw a loop with your end coming off the bottom then do it again. Sheep shank, sheet bend, taut line hitch, Alpine hitch, Hackamore (used to make a bitless bridle for a horse or mule and also called a jug knot) lots of useful knots out there but these are a great start. Remember this, you will always run out of room in your pack but you'll never run out of room in your mind...

Very important point that you must learn to apply the knots in real life scenarios. Also add a "Yosemite Finish" to the Bowline and it will be much more secure. Add a "Blake's Hitch" and you can both rappel and climb the rope.

Since my Boy Scout days, I have frequently used Bowline, as well as Clove hitch and round turn and two half hitches. I believe that the ability to tie simple knots, is one of the most useful survival skills. Securing a load on a trailer or car roof rack is practical in everyday life. Good work on helping to keep the knowledge alive.
