Seeing you weld reminds me of how my Uncle's dog got her name. He got a new puppy while "The Streek" was on the radio. He was welding and the Puppy was trying to watch him. He kept saying, "Don't look, Puppy! Don't look, Puppy!" Then it came out, "Don't look, Ethel!" Thanks for bringing back that memory!

A while back I was doing a house renovation up in SW Missouri. The house was first built in the 1850' with many additions added on. The wild thing was the core building was held together with hickory nails. Yup, hickory. I always wondered how they did that and now I know. Good stuff!

A timely video for me. Welding is a skill I need here at the family farm. Post Covid, there are no repairmen that do home repair visits. So I will teach myself, or take a class at the local community college.

What I think I like most about this is how you can maybe start off with some bank line/cordage to build the shelter (like if you have to get out of the elements right the f- now), and then reinforce the structure with the holes and dowels when time/weather/calorie intake allows. From a simple plow point shelter to a bushcraft-mahal. That thing would be awesome for constructing furniture around the campfire too.

Years ago I made one inspired by your original vid I made mine using JB weld a handrail hold/anchor a socket and a type of socket attachment for the size I needed. still using it ands can auger a 1 inch hole through 5 to 6 inches inches of wood to this day. the trick is knowing how maximize the potential of the JB weld. great vid. now I think I should learn basic welding. Thanks for all you put out there. really gives me some ideas that are useful.

Great video corp. I’ve got a couple of those in different diameters that I carry in a leather roll up in my bushcrafting bag. Added a piece of broken hardwood broom handle with it. Saves time making one in the field. Happy New Year by the way. Looking forward to all your surprises for us in 24! Stay frosty AF 👍

I like your craftsman, "maker" vibe. And your bushcraft vibe. Also, i like how insanely punctual you are with your videos. Also that brass or bronze skillet pour was pretty cool. Don't inhale molten metal fumes too much. Some are worse than lead, but they all take a while to set in. Just use proper ventilation and stuff.

Finlay you nailed it ! For this mid week vids, rather then do demos of basic bush-craft stuff that people already seen 100 times in some variation (boring) doing something like is 1000% more watchable and interesting. Not to mention that i actually am interested on how will you use this in the next vid. Keep finding stuff like this and you will fix you mid week vids problem for sure.

I want to thank you for all your content.In particular your Navigation playlist. I know that information is all over the net, but you basically did what I think was a fairly extensive course, and it's all in one place, from someone I trust. I have used a compass when hunting and doing photography for decades, using back bearings and dead reckoning, but you have helped to open my understanding wider, and given me a step by step process to develop my skills even further. I don't even know if you understand just how much these skills are truly needed, but I thank you very much.

Awesome build. Try mortising the end of one stick into the side of another using an 1 1/2" auger. Then drilling through and perpendicular to both using a 3/8 (or so) auger and pounding a stick in. It's an extremely strong joint that resists movement. Just like chairs use

It would be really interesting to see whether dowel or cordage holds up to time/elements better. Maybe set up an experiment somewhere close to home where you could evaluate it weekly/monthly and record the results? You could see what problems each one has over time; we already know that cordage is faster for temporary shelters, but would it actually hold up better over time? And for how long?

I think you introduced me to scotch eye augers, Corp. They are certainly heavy metal survival tools, but I am glad I've got my 1" in my collection of skills and tools, and even carry a small auger bit for my bit driver. If nothing else, the ability to make small jet stove in minutes without a saw has been useful.

I totally forgot but I took an old drill chuck that was about to get trashed at work and got one of the mechanics to re-thread it for an eye bolt. Basically 1 step and absolutely universal. Only works one way, weighs a few pounds and don't forget the key but it takes anything from 0 to 3/8 of an inch, including 1/2 inch adapters, and no one will ever want to carry that around. Great for grid-down, not for hiking. Might as well make them permanent, compact and light.

If u make the ring the same inside diameter as the drill bit outside diameter and chamfer the edges to a sharp edge then you can use it as a tool to cut dowels to fit the drilled holes
@werewolf74
@werewolf74 Жыл бұрын
A few thoughts. 1. you can use the same diameter tube and put an edge on it to cut the dowel. It seems like a hex hole or socket on the tube, the woorden handle has a very slight dip to let it seat deeper might work as well, so you can break it down and swap the bit.

@michaelbackhaus7879
@michaelbackhaus7879 Жыл бұрын
Did you ever make one with the inner diameter is the same as the auger bit? That way you can make the dowel by feeding it through the hole of the handle. All you have to do is put a knife edge on one side.
