Wellllll this is awesome. Just spent a week going through the pack and go method that many sites reference. This is much easier.

Hi Garrett. Thanks for putting this together. I copy and paste my assembly from a network location. When I Update References, I get "File Not Found" instead of "Outside SolidWorks PDM". And Find Files only allows me to browse the Vault itself, not out to the network location. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Never mind. I see that Find Files only searches the vault. With Replace Files I'm able to browse out to the network. Why don't the initial "Found In" locations point to the network locations? That would really make life easier.

Dear Solidworks, "Add file to vault" button should be in the PDM side bar so I can just quickly move files into the vault instead of this ridiculous workflow. Thanks for the video regardless.

No problem, I'm definitely not SOLIDWORKS so definitely recommend you submit your request through the proper channels. I would love to see some enhancement here.

Nice video. Some SolidWorks PDM:s use a running item numbering system when saving parts/assemblies into the PDM. Are you familiar if there is a way to include a new running item number for each part and/or assembly when moving them from Windows->SolidWorks PDM?
@kleingarrett552 жыл бұрын
You would use the moveTree tool after you have all your references into PDM. I would not recommend it if you might have other files you plan on bringing in later as it won't understand the new name/number however if you only plan on bringing one item in or a few then do your serialization you should be good.

@@kleingarrett55 Ok, I managed to pull it off with a 111 part assembly. It's even doable to move the files within their current folder. Thanks for the tip, it worked like a charm!

how do I move the associated drawings to the vault?
@kleingarrett557 ай бұрын
best thing to do in this situation since the tool doesnt account for drawings of sub components is to put them in the folder where their models are. You will need to open each of the drawings and save them so that their relationships are recreated to the model in the vault. An easy way to do this in mass is to use the SOLIDWORKS task scheduler or a SOLIDWORKS Macro.

How do you move a checked in part file from one folder to another but still keeping all it versions? Is cut and paste the only way? Thanks.
@kleingarrett555 жыл бұрын
Cut and paste or drag and drop...the key is the file needs to be checked in to maintain references. So just don't rename it or move it while it's checked out and you will be fine. If you are trying to migrate versions from Windows explorer thats a bit more difficult...you paste over the checked out file in PDM with the new version, but it it has references you need to make sure they are up to date before you check it in.

Garrett Klein thanks. I was trying to copy and paste the part file into a different folder but keep getting the “files needs a unique name” error.

@@kleingarrett55 what happen if those parts move have drawings attached to them? When you "add to vault" only the parts are added not the associate drawing.
@kleingarrett555 жыл бұрын
@@tonyt5246 best thing to do is put the drawings in the same folder as the models. If your drawings are spread out for that project use pack and go and only copy the drawings without the models to the folder then do update references on the drawings, if any models are missing it will pull the models. Just don't move or rename anything till it's all checked in.
