You are the best! I’m thinking about starting my first pastel painting and this pushed me over the edge. Love your Tuscany series. I just came back from Tuscany and it was nice to remember some of the highlights

I use X-PRESS IT . I find it works best over a sanded surface but it was actually a Mi Tientes waffle paper here .

Wow. I didn't know the fixative doesn't lighten all the way back up when it dries. And I have been using the kneaded eraser wrong. I only used it to 'dab' out color. I didn't know you could actually rub with it. Anyway, learning so very much from you. Thanks.

A very few brands will lighten up most of the way - most will change the colour forever.

Thank you VERY VERY much Lindy. I've just totally overworked a portrait, lost all my definition.....grrrrrrr!!! So, this lesson is very timely. I know I've used hairspray instead of fixative before.... will it allow me to work over it, as you've shown here? I find your videos very helpful, thank you.

Wonderful discussion of various ways to correct mistakes! Clearly the kneaded eraser is the workhorse for removing pastel pigment, but I was impressed by how much you were able to do with the workable fixative. I've used a couple of brands of "workable fixative". including Krylon, for other purposes, but when I try to use them for pastels, I find they have essentially no tooth. What brand(s) do yo use?

bill hansen I use X-PRESS IT. Although I find it works best on textured paper I'm actually using a Mi Tientes waffle paper here.

Wonderful. Thanks for your informative tutorials Lindy. I have a few old unused non textured sketchbooks, if I spray them with Fixative, would I then be able to use them for Pastels?
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. A bit of fixative will help give a bit of gritty surface. If you want to do a number of layers you will need to spray between layers. It does darken up your painting so you may want to choose a few shades lighter than you think you should. You can also use a clear or coloured brit primer on any smooth surface and this will take lots of layers without using fixative. Happy painting!

what is a "brit primer"?
@LindyWhittonStudio
@LindyWhittonStudio 7 жыл бұрын
bill hansen Sorry, I meant a grit primer. That probably makes more sense to you. If not , it's a clear primer with very small grade grit through it, and you just paint iton.

Okay - I see it now - acrylic ground for pastels, such as Golden brand. I'm not ready for that yet (better to buy papers which are already sanded) but it's something to keep in mind.

I use a lot of different brands of soft pastels as well as Conte hard pastels. Some brands I have are Sennelier, Smincke, Great American Artworks, Unison, Terry Ludwig. These are all very good quality but expensive. If you are starting out you might prefer a cheaper brand such as Derwent , Daley-Rowney, or Faber Castell. Check out my video on choosing pastels for more info. kzbin.info/www/bejne/joWmq42ubM1maLM

Sorry - I didn't see this earlier. I use soft pastels of many brands, Sennelier, Schminke, Unison, Great American Artworks, Terry Ludwig, Mungyo, and a few more. The Mungyo Gallery handmade soft pastels are a good mid budget buy for a beginner.
