I just had to replace the output shaft seals in my starboard 150 FICTH, amazing how well that simple seal design keeps the water out and holds pressure. glad it was just a simple seal and didn't have to get into the gears, I can't set the lash on a car, much less on a boat.

I was told I need to have my gearcase shimmed due to wear, the play on the prop is too high (Back and forth), now I understand. Thank you.

Ug... no worse job than setting lash on anything with beveled gears. Doesn't matter if it's a boat lower unit or truck differential... doing it correctly requires A LOT of assembly/disassembly and measuring and usually special tools. Truly a PITA.

This fall my F25TLRD started gear whining from from the lower unit I suspected. Upon oil change, it was confirmed the oil was low, it had water in it, and there was lots of metal fragments stuck on the drain plug. So I'll be attempting to open up the lower unit to look at what sort of destruction happened. Depending on what bearings and/or gears need to be changed, would I need to gap and change the shims too?

Most likely yes, but at this point, depending on the damage, you might just look into buying a used gear case or a new one. Depending on the damage by the time you buy all the parts and spend all the time building it, you might be even to just buy a new or used one and remove and replace it :) this gear case is a F25LC and they are worth like $4-500. The only reason I still have it, I should sell it lol is because the powerhead on the engine locked up

I have a 1995 Yamaha 85hp 2 stroke and the lower has went out. do you recommend a website that sells the lower unit or the parts to rebuild it.

I'd use PartsVu: 2ly.link/21yyt Or Boats.net But you could get an SEI lower unit for that engine pretty cheap with a warranty!

Also is yama gear lube the same as the lower unit oil? I ordered this on Amazon so I hope it's right for the gears. Yamaha New OEM YAMALUBE MARINE GREASE tube cartridge but it doesn't look like what u have. What exactly is the lube u are using for the gears?? Thanks in advance

I have tech question . I have a 2014 tohotsu 250 . The lower unit gets water in it. I have pressure tested it and it does not leak air out, but after I run it in the water, water gets into the gear box. One other strange thing is the gear box gets pressurized. What do you think would pressurize the gear box? Exhaust pressure?

Just running the lower unit pressurizes it, but you should pressurize it more when testing if you have a leak, also spin the shafts and you'll find the leak, a leak is a leak, so put more PSI in it to test, like 12 or so
